~ EVENTS ~ John Stark (1) and Rusty Holland (3) charged through Sandhill MX'Park's first turn. GFI Fall Series North: Rounds 1 & 2 Paladino pounds Sandhill MX By Tom Pritchard BRENTWOOD, CA, ocr. 10·11 an Paladino swept the 125cc Pro class at rounds one and two of the GFI Fall Series North, held at Sandhill Ranch. The Any Rider Kawasaki-sponsored racer fought off strong challenges from his opponents, and was only one of many winners among the 500-plus entrants at the two· day event. Paladino grabbed the holeshot at the start of Saturday's first moto and was never challenged as he romped away with the win. Second went to a hardcharging Pat Gomm, who closed in on Paladino in the closing stages of the race. Rusty Holland f!nished a distant third, ahead of Tad Nelson and Dave Castillo. Holland grabbed the holeshot in moto two, but Paladino stormed into the lead at the start of lap two. Holland, however struck back quickly and the two riders began what would Qe a moto-Iong duel for the lead. On the last lap. Paladino pulled out the stops and performed a last-ditch, go-for-broke pass and scored the win inches ahead of Holland. Hummel, Gomm and Tod Nelson rounded out the top five a few seconds later. Paladino came back to the track on Sunday and again decima~ed the competition in the 125cc Pro class. Paladino led all but three laps in both motos, and his only real challenge came from Nelson, who pushed him throughout moto one. In moto two, Nelson led briefly before Paladino motored past and on to the win. Third overall went to Hummel who finished fourth and third in each of the motos. Yamaha-mounted John Turnell was the most consistent rider in the ovice classes on Sunday, as he earned the wins in both the 125 and 250cc divisions. Turnell's main competition in both motos came from Aaron Mattson. Mattson won the first 250cc Novice moto, but finished third in the second go-round. Turnell's more-consistent 2- I finishes netted him the biggest trophy. In the 125cc Novice class, the top finishers from the first motos of each division were transferred to a single runoff moto. Turnell won his division's first moto, as did Nathan Woods. In n the runoff second moto, Turnell and Woods out-distanced the rest, of the field in a heated battle for the top position. Turnell emerged victorious, and Woods was forced to settle for second overall. CN Results SATURDAY 50 STK: I. Wesley Pallerson (Hon). 50 MOD: I. Robert Harold (Yam). 60 BEG: I. World Championship Endurance Series: Final round Fogarty, Rymer clinch title By Gary Pinchin PHILLIP ISLAND, AUSTRALIA, ocr. 17 rits Carl Fogarty and Terry Rymer were confirmed as World Endurance Champions after dominating the penultimate round of the championship - the Phillip Island Six-Hour. The "sprint" event turned out to be a real marathon for riders, officials and spectators alike as everyone battled the freezing cold wind and rain. High winds were shifting bikes up to six feet sideways across the track while the track was covered in standing water. Conditions were so bad several marshals had to receive hospital treatment for hyperthermia! Organizers had considered calling a premature end to the .face after 75% distance, but the weather eased slightly and it was decided to go full distance. Fogarty claimed pole from Jehan D'Orgeix who was riding the second Kawasaki· France ZX-7 with Aussie Trevor Jordan. The only rider with a chance of taking the title from Fogarty and Rymer was Frenchman Michel Graziano. His regular team, Ecurie Cassegrain, a French bike shop out of Orleans, had decided against making the trip so he joined forces with Aussie Steve Martin on a Mick Hone Suzuki. The bike was virtually a stocker with only aftermarket forks, rear shock and exhaust. Graziano qualified fifth fastest. The only other World Endurance regulars on the grid were the Phase One Kawasaki pairing of Steve Manley and Mark Linsco,tt. They qualified seventh. . Twenty-four teams lined up for the race which was to run three hours in daylight and finish the final three B hours in darkness. Fogarty led from the green light as' the drizzle began. .The rain soon turned heavy and riders began sliding off. Fogarty was lucky to avoid a slower rider as he slid across his path but come the first round of pit stops, the British rider was already comfortably ahe~d of the Aussie pair of Pitman and Archibald on a Pitmans Yamaha. The rain continued to lash down, with darkness bringing the cold, so cold that marshals began alternating duties between trackside and the relative protection of pit lane! Despite the conditions, Fogarty and Rymer never put a wheel wrong and won the race by three laps from the sister bike of D'Orgeix/]ordan. Manley/Linscott took third a further four laps behind while Graziano/Martin finished fourth on the same lap but some 35 seconds adrift of the third CN place team. Results WORLD C'SffiP SUPERBIKE: 1. The race was then called after four laps with Youngblood taking the moto victory ahead of Lampe, ·Giles and Gardner. In the Pro division it was May, Blackburn, McCabe, J.D. Vangilder and Kevin Knight in that order. Lampe jumped out to an early lead to start moto two, as Youngblood, Blackburn, May and McCabe looked on.
