~ LOCAL EVENTS ~ Larry Linkogle (210) and Mark Battista (18) led the 125« Intermediates at Perris MX. went to Larry Pegrain, and the last three heat winners Dave Hebb, Steve Burkholder, and Kris Kiser rounded out the front row for the main event. <: Two riders advanced to the final from each semi. In the first semi, Rogers grabbed the holeshot and ran..Beattie worked his way to seocnd only to be challenged and overtaken ' by Rob Lewis. James Hart beat the pack to the front in the second semi, with Kevin Varnes and Erik Graybeal bumping at his back tire. G.raybeal spent the race knocking at the dopr for second, but Varnes refused to yield. The Last Chance Qualifier was delayed in starting due to a problem with Beattie's machine when a front-end change went awry. Finally, the green flag dropped without Beattie on the line. Graybeal got out front this time and sewed up' his slot in the main, while Farris jockeyed his way though the pack to a frustrating second. In the Dash For Cash for the six fastest qualifiers, Poovey scooted off the line and kept on going. Pegram nailed down second, and Hebb held the lead in a cluster of three, surrounded by Kiser and Burkholder. The B feature saw Beattie ~et another chance to compete. Donnie Kruzmski pulled the holeshot, but was overtaken by Tony Donahue, Geoff Clark, and Brian Strong. Beattie, starting from the back row; picked off Strong and then Clark. A hard dive inside on the last lap shot Beattie to the win and to a chance to compete in the A main. In the A main, Poovey pulled off his third holeshot. Price, Kiser, Pegram, and Burkholder were on his tail, though, and Poovey had some work to do to break loose from the competition. Poovey shook off all the challengers except PegraJ:ll and kept on moving. Pegram tried lines.all over the track to get past, but Poovey got the drive he needed off the comers and never let Pegram get closer than a bike length. Meanwhile, Lewis maneuvered his way through the pack to a third-place finish. Poovey got the checkered flag, the big bucks, and a gigantic trophy, all on his birthday! Results DFC: I. Prince prances to Perris MX win By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA, ocr. 4 48 _ Marc Prince piloted his H&:S Cycle-sponsored KTM to a pair of near-perfect motos in the competitive Vet Novice class at the GFI Fall Series warm-up, held at Perris Raceway. "I know I can win and today I want to prove it," said Greg Pagan prior to the first Vet Novice moto. Pagan's words looked like they would tum to reality as he pulled away during the opening laps of the first Vet Novice moto. But by the third lap of a 13-lap race, things would begin to unravel for Pagan. Pagan stalled his bike in the finish line turn, then made small mistakes during the next two laps. Pagan's lead had all but diminished by the fifth lap, and Prince pulled up to challenge. Pagan appeared to be ridin~ a bit tense and offered hule resistance to Pnnce, who simply motored past and pulled away for the moto victory. Pagan faded to an eventual fifth by the end of moto behind Perry Rodenbeck, Jeff ' Young, Rodney Chavez and moto winner Prince. The second moto saw Prince in the lead by the conclusion of the first lap followed by Chavez, Pagen and Young. Pnnce plotted a perfect course and navigated his KTM to the moto and overall wins. Greg Mazzio turned in an awesome come-from-behind-ride, charging from out of the top five to second. Chavez rode consistently in third, followed by Rodenbeck and Marion. Jerry Jetton topped the 25-29 Novice class. The first moto saw a three-way battle between Jay Pavlovec, Jetton and Paul Kellon. Kellen led the first half of the moto but stumbled and fell in a hairpil). turn. Kellen would remount in seventh and wouldn't be a threat the remainder of the moto. Jetton chased Pavlovec for nearly 10 laps, never falling more than inches behind the Honda rider. During the last half of the final lap, Pavlovec lost control of his machine and crashed. Jetton was quick to pick up the lead and sprint across the line for the win followed by Darrell Stratham. Pavlovec remounted in time to salvage third in front of C.T. Falk and Travis King. Kellen grabbed the holeshot in the second moto and stole the show with a wire-to-wire romp of the class. First moto winner Jetton suffered a poor start and worked up to second only to crash 50 yards before the checkered flag, handing second to Travis King and third to Pavlovec. Jetton rebounded for fourth which combined with his first moto win was good enough for .the overall victory. Results 50 FIRST TIMER: I. Justin Haber (Yam); 2. Garth Williams (Yam); 3. II Derek Watkins piloled his MBL Racingsponsored Honda to victory in both 125cc Intermediate motos at Riverfront Park. The 125cc Intermediate and Junior classes started together, and the first turn was full of aClion. Watkins was on an inside line, but had the door closed on him by Joe Lawwill and Junior rider Ken Bennet!. Watkins retaliated by out-jumping the early leaders in the first set of doubles, and when the riders emerged from'turn three, Watkins had taken over the lead. Lawwill maintained second place with Bennett and Robb Fosberg in tow. Watkins began lo stretch out a lead, and was over five bike lengths ahead of Lawwill as he entered the finish-line rockers. Shane Medford made a move and jumped up into fourth place on lap two. Lawwill bobbled in the back section, allowing Bennett to slip his Kawasaki into second place. Out from, Watkins £lew his Honda brazenly, never backing off despite a nearly insurmountable lead over second place. Watkins was especially impressive in the rockers, revving his bike to the limit and skimming through the roughest sections. Watkins cruised in for first, but Bennett had to battle to the flag for second place. Medford came on strong in ·the last lap, but had to settle for third. The second moto started well for Watkins, as he led the pack from the drop of the start gate. Lawwill was second and Bennett was third. Watkins showed no mercy, and put his Honda on a pace that rapidly distanced him from the field. ~ennett moved under Lawwill to steal second on lap two. Medford moved up also, assuming fOllrth place behind Lawwill. Forsburg had some problems finding a comfortable line in the early laps, but got it together by midrace, moving up to fifth place. With two laps remaining, Lawwill regained second by reacting quickly to a slip by Bennett. Al the checkered flag, Watkins notched another win, finishing a half-lap ahead of second place. Behind Watkins the battle was closer, but Lawwill held on to second ahead of Bennett, with Medford and Forsberg rounding out the top five.
