~ IN THE WIND By Pap_a_ea1--L-ey W Visitors flying into Daytona Beach, Florida, for Cycle Week in March of 1993 will by flying into a new airport. The new Daytona International Airport began service on Sunday, October 18 and is located next to the old regional airport which is now being used by U.S. Customs. Unlike the one level service. of the previous terminal, the new facility has three levels with an atrium in the center. The first flight departed from die $47 million complex for Atlanta at 6: 10 a.m. m Changes have also been made to Daytona International Speedway.· A ~ew, paved access road· has been added to the infield, running along the fenced-in Lake Lloyd.. Dirt tracker Ricky Graham, a twotime Grand National Champion, rode a Honda CBR900 in the AMAlCCS EBC Brakes Enduran<::e Challenge on October 18. The Californian was making his first laps on the tri-oval since 1987 and waS hoping to attract a ride for the March race. Scott Russell's AMA/CCS 750cc Supersport Championship-winning Kawasaki ZXR-7 was at Daytona for the Race of Champions, as was Mike Smith's 600cc Supersport Championship-winning Honda CBR600. The bikes have been purchased by Brian Gibbs, of Stockbridge, Georgia, for use in Amateur races. The 21-year-old Gibbs was fairly consistent, winning the Amateur Heavyweight Superbike and Amateur Heavyweight Supersport classes aboard the ex-Muzzy Kawasaki, and winning the Amateur Middlweight Supersport aboard the ex-Camel Honda. Gibbs finished second to the record-setting Todd Harrington in the Amateur Middleweight Superbike, the Amateur Solo GTU, and was fourth in the Amateur Solo GTO. 1991 AMA Superbike National Champion Thomas Stevens was given an early release from his Kawasaki contract, and was riding a 1993 Suzuki GSXR750 at Daytona. Stevens wasn't actually competing, but was getting some track time on the new bikes and looking forward to the Dunlop tire tests scheduled for December at Daytona. Stevens will ride a Yoshimura Suzuki in the 1993 .AMA Superbike National Championship. Papa fourid the following breakdown of brands of bikes ridden in the GFI Fall MX Series opener at Perris Raceway in southern California on October 11 interesting: According to G FI, Yamaha was the bike of choice of a whopping 40% (176) of the 438 entries. Honda was next with 21% (90), followed by Kawasaki at 19% (83), Suzuki 8% (79), KTM 1% (6), and ATK .06% (3). The brand of one "other" bike was not identified. Hooker Headers has re-released their complete line of two-stroke and four-stroke exhaust systems for popular 1968 through 1985 motor·' cycles. Papa looked through the Hooker catalog and found he could purchase a new pipe for his 1968 Yamaha DTI for $105.75 from his local dealer. For more information,· call Hooker's tech department at 800/862-6234. The Pennsylvania Department ot Transportation will be holding its annual Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Day on Saturday, October 31. The Pennsylvania Trail Riders Association (PATRA) will be participating in the adopt-a-highway program on that day in and around the town of Joliett in Schuylkill County. PATRA is seeking volunteers to help with the project. "Please join us in our fight against litter and to bolster our image as responsible off-road enthusiasts," PATRA's Ted Witmer said. Volunteers will meet at Maxine's Restaurant at the Ravine exit of 1-81 North at 9 a.m. National Cross Country Champion Scott Summers of Team Honda will be at Concord Motorsports in Concord, California, on Saturday, October 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for autographs and to answer questions about riding/racing off-road fourstrokes. For a fun day of motorcycle viewing and bench racing, head out to Hansen Dam Park in Sylmar, California, on Saturday, October 31, for the Ascot to Daytona: The Men & Machines display day. Organized by former Triumph race team mechanic Pat Owens, the activities are free although a donation to the Clayton Foundation is suggested. Owens says Gene Smith will be displaying the Triumph 650 he rode to runner-up finishes in the 1967 and 1968 Barstow- _ to-Vegas races and Jim Kelly will be there with his current racing Harleys, including the 883R Sportster that Jay Springsteen rode to victory in the recent exhibition race at Pomona. that. the show will be repeated. Check your local listings. Steve Storz, Skip 'Van Leeuwen will take place at Hollister Hills in northern California on October 24-25. The· event will feature many past champions, including two-time Gran~ National Champion Dick Mann, World MX Champion Jeff Smith, John DeSoto, Eddie Mulder and Buck Murphy, and current stars including two-time Grand National Champion Ricky Graham. The final round of the 1992 AHRMA Vintage Iron National MX Series and Owens are sponsoring BSA, Triumph and Harley-Davidson Best of Show awards, and clubs are invited to sponsor awards for other brands. International Sidecar Racingteams Association (ISRA) The Spain's Circuit de Catalunya, site of the 1992 European Grand Prix, has been voted the top GP circuit of 1992 by IRTA .teams. The road race facility at Montmelo, just north of Barcelona, topped the poll ahead of Australia's Eastern Creek, Donington Park in England, and Jerez in southern Spain. The teams vote in a number of categories, including circuit safety, facilities, spectator viewing, and paddock security. Interlagos, the site of the Brazilian GP, finished last. recently met in Amsterdam, Holland, and named a new board. Jaap Timmer was named president, Theo van Kempen secretary, and Mark Reddington treasurer. Other members are three-times Sidecar World Champion Steve Webster and Louis Christen. In a press release dated October 14, Timmer said, "Our first task is to draw up a good plan of action to secure the future of the Sidecar class in the long term. The class deserves it, the public deserves it, the riders deserve it, so we have to work very hard to realize our goals." The release said establishing a race calendar for 1993 was a priority and "at this moment it's likely that there will be five races with the solo Grand Prix and five races with the Superbikes." But the World Championship Superbike Road Race Series press office countered the ISRA announcement: "With reference to the ISRA press release of October 14 and to the declaration regarding the five World Championship Sidecar races to be included in the Superbike World Championship, we would like to inform you that such an arrangement is not foreseen in any way." Stay tuned. Just minutes before this issue went to press, Honda announced that Roger DeCoster was "leaving American Honda to pursue other opportunities." The multi-time World Champ~on had spent the past 12 years with Honda and, as was recognized in the press release, had a major influence on the development of Honda MX racing and production bikes, as well as on the careers of many American MX champs. "One of the most difficult parts for us is losing Roger's unmatched ability to spot and guide future champions," said Honda Senior Vice President John Petas. We were unable to reach DeCoster for comment. BORN: Rex Wayne Rainey, son of Union City Cycle Sales in Union City, Ohio, will be hosting an open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on three~time World Champion Wayne Rainey and his wife Shae, on October 12 in Downey, California. The Dodge Truck-sponsored U.S. 250cc MX Grand Prix which took place in July at New York's Unadilla Valley Sport Center will be televised on ESPN on Saturday, October 24, at 5:30 p.m. Eastern time. It is expected I HIRED: Mike Velasco, by The Brothers - a Honda, Yamaha, BMW, Ducati and Bimota dealership in Bremerton, Washington. Velasco, a noted tuner who has been responsible for the race bikes of the likes of Freddie Spencer and Bubba Shobert, was most recently with Two Brothers Racing. From 1979 to 1988 he worked for American Horrda/HRC. The Brothers has announced that a MVR Products line of custom high-performance engine parts will soon be introduced.
