v ICES Letters to the editor 0 INSIDE Say no to arrogance FEATURES Happiness can be defined in many different ways. But' for millions of Californians, it is defined as a weekend out in the rugged and sometimes harsh landscape of our state's spacious deserts. On their motOl"cycles or in their 4x4s riding through the open desert terrain it is an exhilarating experience and at the end of the ride, . one can be dirty and exhausted - but extremely content. However, some people in Washington, D.C., some 2700 miles away, people who have never seen a desert, want to restrict your right to use ours in the name of nebulous environmental protection. Not only would it directly cost 27,000 jobs in the first year (who knows how many indirect jobs it would take), but it would take away one-fourth of our environment for use of no one but backpackers. Why? We're not talking about Amazonian rain forests. There are no endangered species to contend with. Water tables.are not threatened. The real reason that Congress wants to restrict your right to use our great deserts is arrogance. Arrogance that they know better than we do. Arrogance that only they have the answers, when the exact opposite is true. When are they going to allow us access to the pursuit of happiness as we see fit and not as mandated from . their Ivory Tower? The answer is not until we, as voters, start to elect those men and women who realize the proper goal of the federal government. Thomas Jefferson said the ideal government was "a wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring another, " and "shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement." I want to see our government return to this limited scope and if I am elected November 3, I will expend every minute I am in Washington towards this goal. The alternative is bigger government. Does anybody really think that we need any more government intervention? If you do, by all means, vote for my opponent. But if you want the Congress to get out of your business and to only deal with the necessities of government, I· would appreciate your vote. Bruce Herschenson Newport Beach, CA Television commentator/educator Herschenson is the Republican candidate for California's long-term (sixyear) U.S. Senate seat . .. Editor. Godspeed, Dave Most' of the road racers in the Southeast Region knew Dave Garner (#927) to be a fast and tough rival on the track, leading the points chase in more than one class this year. Off the track, Dave was easy going and full of life - always welcome and always ready to pitch in and help. Dave has died, but he still lives in our memories of him as a strong .competitor, a kind man, and a great friend. Godspeed, Dave. Paul Wright Marietta Motorsports Marietta, GA Start, finish on time I was very saddened to read of Mike Kidd's resignation as AMA National dirt track manager. Since Kidd and (referee) Jerry Kennedy have been' administering National dirt track races, my family and I have witnessed four National races: San Jose Grand National Mile', Fresno 600 Mile, Castle Rock 600 TT and Sacramento Grand National Mile. San Jose and Sacramento were without a doubt the finest administered races of the many we have witnessed in the last 20 years. Complete National programs of the finest of motorcycle racing were presented in slightly more than three hours - started on time and completed without delays. My great wncern now is that the Mt. St. Helen's M.C. of Castle Rock, Washington, has announced that the AMA has granted them a sanction to present a Grand National TT in the spring of 1993. Based on the performance .of the club in presenting the most recent 600 National and' those of the last five years which I have witnessed, this' action by the AMA could be a grave mistake. As spectators at the September 18-19 Castle Rock Regional and 600 National races, we witnessed the program start nearly an hour late and extend past midnight. We have never seen a 600 National TT (at Castle Rock) start on time and we have seen them all. The fiascos presented at Fresno and Castle' Rock are killing dirt track racing, the very heart and soul of American motorcycle .racing. Unless these promoters and officials get smart and present a spectator-friendly program, the sport will continue to decline right out of existence. The spectators pay the bills, the stands must be filled with satisfied people. It was a sad day when Mike left, we hope Jerry continues. Bob &: Estelle Azevedo Redding, CA Bring back the Twins The decision to eliminate the Twins class' from AMA road race competition has virtually eliminated the only event which allows for variety and contrast. It is no secret that the other events are dominated by the "big four." Because of the greater 'latitude available in the rules for the Twins class, both the racers and the spectators can experience the results' of innovations and diversities. Within this one class the motorcycles have various makes of engines,' innumerable modifications to bodies and frames, not to mention the variety of sounds! This class appeals to those who are innovative as well as truly captivated by the sport. When there were two GP classes, GPI and GP2, it was obvious that the more popular class was GP2. There were more GP2 bikes than true GPI bikes, yet the GP2 class was elimi· nated in the 1992 season. The Twins class has attracted a proportionally large interest from the international scene, as evidenced at Daytona. There is wisdom in reinstating, and perhaps restructuring the Twins classes. The interest and popularity has been established and with creative encouragement the class will grow.
