Being 40 minutes, and over 25 laps, down at the start, I thought this was another nightmare from the past with no remote chance of even a top five firtish. After Team Suzuki Endurance's rotten luck, along with Team Pasta Marin's even worse fortune, some ironman and outstanding efforts from both riders and pit crew, our lost cause evolved into a lead for us in the 21st hour - and ultimately a victory. A tip of my hat to riders Nick lenatsch, Robbie Petersen, Randy Renfrow, Lance Holst, Kent Kuntisugo and Andy Milton; and also to the crew of AI, Glenn, Kevin, Craig, Bob, Dan, Tom, Scott, Bobby, and all the rest who I can't recall at the moment - you know who you are. I know American Honda and all the other sponsors are proud of a job well done. It took a few days to realize I was lucky enough to be a part of this experience. Rodney Smith Oakley, CA r--------------------------, America's weekly motorcycle newspaper Letters to the editor Rodney Smith posted the best score by an American rider in this year's ISDE in Cessnock, Australia. By finis.hing fourth in the overall standings, Smith also gave America its bestever individual overall finish in Six Days competition. .. Editor. Missed Wayne I wait impatiently every week for my copy of Cycle News. The first thing l see is the cover, and I always feel the cover should reflect the biggest motorcycle news during the week the iss.,ue covers. I feel you dropped the ball with the September 23 issue. I always thought the pinnacle of motorcycle racing was the World Championship Road Race Series. An American wins it for the third consecutive year and he doesn't get the cover. Instead, it goes to the Motocross des Nations. Yes, the Motocross des Nations is important and also won by Americans, but is it really the biggest story - 2oo,ooo-plus fans at Jerez in Spain can't be wrong. Wayne Rainey was also cheated last year when he won it for the second straight year, yet no cover. Another American wins the World Superbike Championship last year, but he too is cheated from his cover. I hope when Doug Polen wins it again this year that he gets the cover he deserves. I will continue to enjoy every issue of Cycle News and will still look forward to every new, exciting and incolor cover. Don Platek Richmond, V A Wayne Rainey was featured on the front page of our September 9 issue. It marked the.I5th time the three-time World Champion has graced our front page. In choosing the U.S. Motocross des Nations team to be represented by Billy Liles, we honored a team that registered the 12th consecutive American victory in the World Championship team event. No slight of World Champion Rainey was intended . .. Editor. . 24-Hour West Less than a week prior to the 1992 WERA 24-Hour West endurance race at Willow Springs, I received a call from Mr. Dirk Vandeberg, racing coordinator at American Honda. He asked me if I'd be interested in participating in a Motorcyclist Magazine/ American Honda effort in the event. Having participated in recent 24-hour Sti:ve Biganski Lawndale, CA Plonkers say thanks Plonkers Trials Club would like to thank the manufacturers, distributors and dealers who donated prizes to the "Letter Writers Raffle" held at our Second Annual Lone Ranger Trial on September 13 at Cactus Flat, California. Our club gave every rider, family' member and friend bringing in a letter to Sen. John Seymour regarding Senate Bill 21 ("The Desert Closure Act") a $5 discount on the ride and a free raffle ticket. Sprocket Specialists, Tucker-Rocky Distributing, Acerbis, Maier Mfg., No Fear Gear, Bel-Ray, High Desert Trials Center and Metro Urban Wear made it possible for us to provide some great raffle prizes to the letter writers, the people who help protect our right to ride. Since we began our letter-writing campaign last year, Plonkers has collected nearly 200 letters on various issues and we've given riders approximately $750 in entry fee discounts. Plonkers encourages other clubs' to develop their own creative methods to increase rider participation and awareness of the political process. Of course, who would expect anything less from the producers of my all-time favorite motorcycle video, Glory Days. Give Joe a raise and keep those articles on he golden age of motorcycling coming.
