~ LOCAL EVENTS Fleming flies at LACR MX ~ By Greg Robertson Stacy Skaggs (123) battled hard at Los Angeles County Raceway's Friday Night Motocross, eventually finishing in seventh place in the large Vet Novice class. Todd Bennick (15) overtook Kevin Walker in the 250cc A class at Pro Sport MX. PALMDALE, CA, SEPT. 25 Ryan Fleming dominated the 125cc Beginner class with a I-I molO sweep at California Racing Club's Friday night motocross, held at Los Angeles County Raceway. From the drop o[ the gate in moto one until the checkered flag, Fleming was uncontested. Darren Schamber and Mark Libardoni went at it for the entire race, for second place, with Schamber getting the nod wilh a couple of laps remaining. Fleming had his 125cc machine screaming hard enough 10 lOp all . the 250cc bikes in the combined class. The second molO appeared to be a repeat of the first, with Fleming out in front and pulling away. On the [i[th lap, Fleming lost control through a whoop section, and went down hard, remounting with Libardoni and Mall Murphy on his rear fender. A shaken Fleming held of[ the attacks for a lap before pulling away for the win. Libardoni managed second over Murphy. Rodney Morrison worked through heavy tra£fic in both Vet Novice races, nabbing the overall win with a 2-1 score. Sleve SchrobsdorE ran in front for the first hal[ of molO one before Morrison moved past aEter getting sixth. Bill Kolkman followed Morrison up through the pack to finish third behind SchrobsdorE_ Aller one circuit of the track in molO two, Kolkman was out front with Schrobsdorf and Morrison rurming midpack. By the third lap, Morrison had worked up and ovenaken SchrobsdorE [or second. A lap later Morrison had the lead, but it was short-lived as Rick Chouinard came from back in the pack to make the surprise pass and score the molO win. Kolkman's 3-3 finishes edged out Schrobsdorfs 2-4 score for second overall. jonathan Shimp and ChrislOpher Gosselaar battled it out in .the [irst 60cc (9-11) class moto until Shimp's front end washed out in a tum, causing him 10 go down. This handed lhe win to Gosselaar. The two riders went head 10 head the entire second molO, with Gosselaar using every inch o[ the track trying to pass Shimp for the lead. Eriksson snags Rivennont HS win By Arlene Hejlek 40 POTOSI, MO, SEPT. 20 jimmie Eriksson scored the overall victory at the 13th round of the Missouri Hare Scrambles Series, where the Missouri Mudders hosted another wet event. Constant rain made a beast of the alreadychallenging course, as 125 riders bauled for supremacy. Eriksson had the lead at the stan of the two~hour event, but went down in the first woods section, allowing jerry Hemann to pass. These two battled for two more laps. Enksson took the lead once more on the third lap and extended it when Hemann had to pit [or [uel at the end of the lap. Chris Caplinger also passed Hemann and was within 10 seconds o[ catcbing Eriksson. On the fourth and final lap, Caplinger's rear disc broke, causing him to drop from second to founh by the finish. Husaberg AmericalMotul/Sprocket SpecialistslBridgestonelYoko/Fredeue Racing/ Arai/Acerbis/Smith/RK-sponsored Eriksson slowed his pace on the last lap, nursing fading front and rear brakes. Nonetheless, he cruised in with a three and a half-minute cushion to claim the overall victory. Hemann finished second overall and first Expert, followed by Steve Leivan and Caplinger. Fifth overall [inisher Pat Schmidt stormed out in [ront of the 125cc class and was the only one in his.c1ass to complete [our laps. Chris Graber contended with useless goggles and [aded brakes and topped the Intermediate class by a rive-minute margin. The 250cc class saw [ront-runner Mike Windmann drop to third position when he went down on the slippery rocks, allowing Gary Miuleberg and Steve Hemann to pass. Bennick blasts Pro Sport MX By Barbara Be Loren Williams WYTHEVILLE, VA, SEPT. 20 Todd Bennick held of[ a determined charge by Kevin Walker for the 250cc A class overall victory at Pro Sport MX. Bennick crashed on the first lap of molO one, and remounted in ninth place. Kevin Walker rode in [irst One lap later, Bennick had advanced three places to sixth. Working his way past jamie Frazier to take over fifth, Bennick immediately encountered Billy Cox. Always a tough contender, Cox didn't allow Bennick any opening until the very last lap when he took a spill. Walker rode ahead to score the mow win. "Billy got between me and Kevin Walker, and we were all three racing for position," said Bennick. "I figured i[ I stayed on him long enough while he was trying 10 concentrate on passing Kevin, he'd makf' a mistake, but I didn't think he'd [all down." In a wild second-moto stan, Walker powered past the Eield on the outside of the ,[irst tum to claim the [ront spot with Bennick hot on his heels. Walker and Bennick began to pull away from the pack, and at the halfway point o[ the eight-lap contest, Bennick slipped underneath Walker in a tight comer. Once past, Walker was joined by Shane Templeton, Cox and Chad Lough. The spectators were then treated to side-byside racing that went' all the way to the checkered flag, with Bennick winning the moto and the overall. "That was [un," said Bennick. "It was more work than the [irst moto, but then I wasn't trying to catch up this time, either." Dag Boyesen easily handled the Open A competition, but Amateur-class rider Ron jones gave him something 10 think about In the combined first molO, jones roared 10 the front and successfully defended his position against repeated challenges by Boyesen coming across the line at the head of the field. Resolving not 10 allow a repeat, Boyesen leaped to the point position on the secondmoto start and hammered down, keeping jones behind him until [ailing in the rockers. Brant's patience pays off at Lake Perris Speedway By Scott Daloisio PERRIS, CA, SEPT. 24 Scott Brant waited until the last lap 10 make his move on Bobby Schwartz and win the Scratch main on the last night of the regular season at Lake Perris Speedway. From gate three, Schwartz roared of[ the line at the start and jumped into a comfortable lead. Brant was second followed by his brother-in-law Steve Lucero, and ational Champion Mike Faria. Faria got a poor start and was never a faclOr in the race. Schwartz, on a Weslake, looked to be in control at the halfway points, but that's when Brant staned to tum up the heal. Riding the Russell Racing/Vent's Goggles/Riverside Chevrolet/Prime Ticket/Kelly Inman Creations-sponsored Weslake, Bram chased down the 19-year speedway veteran and at the white flag, he was on his rear tire. Heading into three on the last lap, Brant dove for the pole and took over the lead. He then maintained the position and beat Schwartz to the line by a length.
