DeVane dashes to Vanwagoner Memorial Motocross win By Kyle Myers DADE CITY, FL, SEPT. 5 Vince DeVane captured the lion's share of the Open Money class purse, at round 14 of the Dade City Point Series, held at Pasco County Fair~ounds. WIth the traffic accident death of Fred Vanwagoner on August 3.l5t, motocross friends and families got to say goodbye on Wednesday at two large funeral services. On this Saturday night, though, Dade City Raceway said its goodbyes. Vanwagoner started racing at age eight and had a strong family support system. For the last five years, Fred raced Dade City every Saturday night. His family was presented with cards and two jerseys signed by fellow JIiotocrossers and their families. All Money class riders 'wore Vanwagoner jerseys with #81 on them, all other riders had #81 stickers on their bikes. Greg Dillow, v.anwagoner's best friend, rode Fred's bike around the track for one slow lap before the start of the Open Money class. Dillow rode all three classes that Vanwagoner raced. Ricky Hampshire led the Open Money class into the first turn with DeVane, Kenny Yoho, Ryan Dean and Johnny Hudson following. DeVane jumped by Hampshire on the opening lap, and Hudson fell, moving Gene Pearson into fifth. After falling in the first turn, Derek Youngblood motored by Pearson in the whoops. DeVane piloted his AXO/ Oakley /Renthal/Dunlop/FMF /Barr's Comp.lMotorcyc1e Stuff/No Limit/ProAction/Powermist-backed Suzuki'RM125 om to a lead that he would never surrender. Youngblood dove underneath Dean, and Yoho pressured Hampshire on the last lap. DeVane held on for the win over Hampshire, Yoho and Youngblood, who just held off Dean. The second moto saw Hampshire again blast into the lead, but DeVane slipped by in the first turn. Youngblood, Dean and Yoho looked on. Yoho slid out, and Russ Human moved his ATK into fifth. Human crashed, Pearson moved by. DeVane once again added to his lead, while Hampshire and Youngblood fought for second. Positions stayed the same, and DeVane completed his 1-1 moto sweep to take the victory ahead of Hampshire, Youngblood, Dean and Pearson. Results +25: 1. Wes Shallow (Hon); 2. Greg Dillow (Vam); 3. No match for Randolph at 1-96 Speedway Half Mile By Grace DiBenedetto LAKE ODESSA, Ml, SEPT. 5 Jeff Randolph had no equal in the DTX and 250cc classes at 1-90 Speedway as he smoked them in the heats and finals in both classes. Randolph and Jaramia Becker took sides coming around turn three, as they sandwiched Chip Green out of the lead on the first lap in heat one of the DTX class. Once by the grandstand, Randolph took the point and held it to the wire. Heat two saw Jason Sentell hold off Steven Charles to the wire, then the two heat winners went at it in the final. Sentell got the holeshot in the final, but Randolph immediately took up the challenge. The Yamaha rider chased Sentell's Kawasaki down the backstretch and came out of turns three and four side by side. Randolph completed the pass heading into turn one on lap two, and Sentell was left to take up the chase for the next seven laps. Sentell found himself playing follow the leader once again in the 250cc class, with Randolph powering around him in tum four, then holding the advantage till the checkered flag. Sentell had his hands full, as Becker came up to challenge him for second on lap six and dido'tlet off till the flag flew. Jack Mayer walked away with the majority of the cash after grabbing the checkered flag in both the Pro-Am and Combo classes. Heat one of the Pro-Am class saw Mayer slip past Kenny McConnell in turn three, but just as he got to the top, McConnell went for a wild slide out of the corner that sent him rolling helplessly over the embankment. McConnell was okay and came back to the penalty line. On the restart, Mayer came between riders and· into the lead by the time they reached turn two. After taking the point, Mayer opened the lead, and the race was on for se~ond, with Mike Dickerson holding off Brian Borgman's eight-lap challenge. In the final Mayer matched holeshots with heat two winner Rob Williams. The two took one lap to sort themselves out, with the Woods Rotax-mounted Mayer reaching the backstretch first on the second lap. Williams stayed on him for the rest of the race but was never able to get within striking distance. The Combo was a repeat of the Pro-Am with Williams, again, following Mayer around the half mile oval in pursuit of secondplace money. While Dickerson rounded out the top three, the real racing was going on for fourth, as Jaramia Becker and Mike Kolenda went at it tooth and nail for the last pay-off spot. The two Rotax riders went peg to peg from lap six on, with Becker taking the wall side of the groove. Becker finally got the edge around turn oen on the white flag lap, making a good move to hold him till it paid off at the checkered flag. Results 50: J. Bryan Smith (Vam); 2. Daily doubles at Bear Creek Spdwy By Kevin George S. CANTON, OH, SEPT. 5 Brian Daily went undefeated for the night by posting two heat race wins and the main event wins in both the Scratch and Handicap mains at Bear Creek Speedway. The Handicap win was Daily's third in a row. Daily had tough "Competition thanks to Pat Reynolds as well as local regulars Mark Maurer and Jeff Tretara. Reynolds scored the win in his heat and finished second place to Daily in a closely fought battle in the semi. Maurer brought out a red flag with a nasty solo crash. Maurer was okay and managed to score well enough to make the Scratch main. John Vasil had a heat race win and a second place finish in a semi to join Daily, Reynolds and Maurer in the Scratch main, where Daily and Reynolds pulled away to a super handlebar banging battle. Each rider tried both the groove and the cushion to try to gain an advantage. Daily led by a wheel as they took the checkered. Maurer outdueled Vasil for third. MAZEPPA, MN, AUG. 30 Mike Graif smoked the Vet A class at the District 23 motocross race promoted by Jack Kann at the Hurricane Hills Track. Craif has been racing since 1974 and not only went II in the Vet A motos but had a respectable day in the Plus 25 class for fourth overall. Graif launched into an early lead as the first Vet moto began and pulled away for the win while Dana Hunt battled with Ken Matson over second. Matson eventually got the upper hand and led Hunt past the checkered flag. Mike Nathe finished a troubled moto in fourth. Graif pulled the holeshot at 'the stan of the second moto and held on all the way to the finish. Hunt held second for a portion of the race but Nathe made a nice pass over the finish line jump to take it away· from him. Jack Parenteau rounded out the top four. The Hurricane Hills track was drying fast with warm weather and too much wind, but Kann dug up the surface with his tractor periodically to bring up moisture. About 320 riders competed in the various classes. The only track change was a reworking of the pair of double jumps into a double-single or a triple, depending on the courage of the jump attemptee. Cory Keeney was the only rider rambunctious enough to go for it on this day. . Team Green rider Keeney powered into the lead as the gate dropped on the first 125cc A moto, and extended his lead over the pack while his biggest threat, Mike Atkinson, crashed and dropped back in the pack. Jim Povolny ran a strong race to hold second behind a long-gone Keeney at the checkered flag. Pat Donaho and Jason Kempel were slowly closing the gap on Povo]ny at the conclusion of the moto. Keeney won the second moto with Kempel nailing down second. Donaho held third once again with Jay Mercill collecting fourth after a first-moto eighth. Results MICRO MINI: J. Collin Butze; 2. Medlock Jr. DENVER, NC, SEPT. 6 Steve McSwain won the combined ProlVet race at the Litlle Denver Hare Scrambles. The area was soaked' by rain the day before the race, but that didn't stop ]60 riders from coming out to participate in the event. The sun came out in time for the competition, and conditions were perfect on the seven-mile course. McSwain pulled the holeshot when his race left the line, but was followedc1osely by Ferrell Smith. McSwain hit a tree after landing from a creek jump, and Smith passed him for the
