Lucero lights up Costa Mesa Spdwy By M. Sober COSTA MESA, CA, SEPT. 4 Steve Lucero won the fifth of six rounds in the National Speedway Qualifying Series that will decide which 14 domestic riders will advance to the United States Speedway Championships. The qualifying round was held at Costa Mesa Speedway on the Oral)ge County Fairgrounds, before a healthy crowd of 5000. Lucero opened up the heat races with a win, and never backed off as he amassed a nearmaximum 20-points. Joining Lucero with first-round heat wins was Louis Kossuth, Bobby Schwaru, National Champion Faria and Bart Bast. The second round saw Lucero drop his only point of the meeting when Charlie Venegas beat him in event number seven. Cary Hicks won the second heat, in a controversial race that saw Brad Oxley and Hedden mixing it up. Manchester came back to avenge an earlier loss with .a win in the next heat. Long-shot Jason Chism won the next race, while Faria took anpther win one race later. Jesse Ochoa continued his fine riding, winning the last heat of round two. The final six heat races started as the first had, with Lucero winning despite his thirdstraight outside-lane starting spot. Venegas, Hedden and Pfeuing also won. Pfetzing's win coming as he passed Cary Hicks with a classic outside move. Faria and Schwartz won the last two heats. Mancht:ster won the first semi over John Aden, while Lucero had a more difficult time holding off Louis Kossuth, Cary Hicks and Bart Bast. The third semi was topped by Pfetzing, who was followed by Oxley. Schwam finished third and did not transfer LO the consolation race or the main event for the first time in the 1992 qualifiers. Faria ran away from Northrup to secure the last position in the points-rich main event. Northrup chose the pole in the consolation race and used his advantage to capture the win and earn four points. Oxley finished up his best night of the qualifiers in second place. Despite being on the inside starting lane, Faria could not get enough going at the start to hold off Lucero, who gated first and was CARSON ~ITY, NV, AUG. 28 Jim Holley won Silver State Raceway's 250cc Pro class over 10 of the top riders in Nevada and northern California. In moLO one, the first turn belonged to John Stark, who was followed by Ron Allen, Holley and Shane Esposito. The riders battled for position for several laps, and the crowd was on !ts feet. Stark held off Holley for three laps, while EsposiLO rode close behind, waiting for a mistake. Esposito made a great move and passed Stark in the air over a tough set of doubles. Pat Comm, who was squeezed out in the start, moved up to fourth place and began to pressure Esposito. Esposito pulled off the track with mechanical problems, moving Comm into third. Comm passed Stark to ~ecure second place with three laps to go, and mched hiS way closer to Holley and in the last turn of the last lap, Gomm grabbed a handful of throttle in a desperate attempt at the moLO win, but he landed short off the finish-line table jump and went down. Holley won, while Comm was able to cross the finish line in second. In moto two, EsposiLO got the holeshot, followed by Comm, Stillmock, Holley and Stark. The first four riders held their positions with little change until lap eight, when Holley passed Comm and set his sights on Esposito. Esposito held off Holley brilliantly, and took the checkered flag in first. Holley's secondplace finish was good enough for the overall win, and Gomm finished third in the moLO, for second overall. Arnold tops LACR Motocross By Greg Robertson PALMDAU, CA, SEPT. 4 Richard Arnold won the Mini Novice class at California Racing Club's Friday night motocross, held .at Los Angeles County Raceway. Both motos were a s.how of how evenly matched Arnold and Michael Young are. From the first turn of the last lap of moto one, Young was making life miserable for Arnold as he tried LO get around for the lead. Two turns from the finish, Young pulled alongside Arnold and out-jumped him into the next turn. Unfortunately for Young, the yellow flag was out for a fallen rider and he was penalized a lap for the pass. Arnold was given the win, with Billy Payne second. Young and Arnold were head to head for the entire second moto, with Young barely pulling away LO score the win. Arnold's runner-up finish gave him first overall. Young still managed to take home second overall over Payne's 2-3 score. Consistency paid off for Randy Wysocki, as he topped the Vet Novice class without winning a moLO. Wysocki took an early lead in moLO one, but C~is Perez pressured him and got by on t~e. third lap. Wysocki didn't give up, and ftmshed a close second place to Perez at the checkered flag. Wysocki again had the quickest reaction time in moto two and led Perez and Bob Shimp. Perez tipped over in a turn and dropped LO eighth, while Shimp pushed Wysocki back LO second and went uncontested for the win. Wysocki cruised on to finish second and score the overall honors. Reynaud rules Oak Hill MX By Pam Lambert DECATOUR, TX, AUG. 31 Robbie Reynard won both the 125 and 250cc Ell:pert classes at Oak Hill MX Park, where 15 racers in each class vied for the $1400 purse offered by promoter/racer Dennis Hawthorne. First-moLO action in the 125cc Expert class saw Clint Latham jump into the lead right off the gate. As the riders made it through the first lap, Rudy Heathcott pushed his way into second, closely followed by Dennis Hawthorne. Reynard got off LO a midpack start and worked his way through the crowd to find himself in fifth place behind fellow Kawasaki rider Roy Schellenberger. Misfortune struck early as leader Latham took a hard fall and allowed Hawthorne to steal the lead, but by this time Reynard had moved past Schellenberger and Heathcott for .second place. With only three laps left, Reynard began pressing Hawthorne for the lead position. Reynard tried several moves, but Hawthorne held on for the moto win. Moto two began with a l-lawthorne holeshot, with Schellenberger, Heathcott, Reynard and Latham trailing. While Hawthorne held the lead, Reynard battled his way around Heathcott and Schellenberger, then quickly pulled up on Hawthorne's rear fender. Reynard made a clean pass in the whoop section, but Hawthorne took back the lead in the next turn. The conflict continued throughout the final lap, until Reynard pul1ed out all the stops and passed the veteran over the uphill just a few feet from the finish line. Reynard's 2-1 score earned him first overall. Results 50: I. Chase Reed (Yam); 2. Melissa Franks (Yam); 3. ~n Williams (Yam); 4. Andrea Franks (Yam); 5. Andrew JanslOg (Yam). 60: 1.
