After topping Sammy Stepanovich and Jamie Inch in the 250cc Smooth-Tire class, Lynch switched from his Honda to a Rotax, and lined up for tbe Open B contest. John VanDerKooi gave Lynch some stiff competition, going high and low as he looked for a way around, but Lynch hooked up and pulled away for the win. In the Open Pro class, John VanDerKooi's· brother Jerry put a stop to Lynch's hot streak. VanDerKooi put his Rotax out in front and never looked back. After a race-long battle for second place with John VanDerKooi, Lynch secured the position at the Hnish. The Senior class featured wheel-to-wheel action between Jim Beck and John VanDerKooi. The duo battled for seven laps, but Beck slowed on lap eight when his spark plug cap came loose and VanDerKooi pulled away with the win. Are you looking for a vintage motorcycles? Williams wails at Sonoma RR By Erik Hove SONOMA, CA, AUG. 23 Joe Brett Williams recorded three wins and became the first person to beat AI Salaverria in the Formula Grand Prix Series in its inaugural season. Before the race, Scott Gray predicted that he would turn a lap time three seconds faster than Don Greene's unofficial track record of one minute and 45.7 seconds. It looked like Gray's prediction mi§ht come true when he made'a daring pass on Williams and started to leave the pack behind. Gray's chances came to an end, however, when he crashed in turn seven on the second lap. Williams took over the lead spot after Gray's crash, and held on for the win.
