WBPA 4 Letters to the editor Duke says thanks For 28 years, I spent my weekends trave.ling across the country as a part of what I consider the best sport on earth - American dirt track racing. As the AMA National dirt track referee, I had the pleasure of working with some of the sport's greatest riders, and have many fond memories ' of my years on the tour. This year, I was released from my . position and have since spent my time working around the house and restoring a few vintage motorcycles. As an avid dirt track fan, I.have continued to travel to the nearby races to watch my friends compete. At the Labor Day weekend Springfield Mile, I was surprised with gifts given to me by the riders of the Camel Pro Series. On behalf of all the racers, Gran'd National Champion Scott Parker presented me with a special edition Harley-Davidson leather jacket, a coffee mug and a bottle of Kahlua, thanking me for all my years of hard work as referee. It was really touching that the riders thought so much of me, and I was knocked out by their sentiments. Thanks, guys. You've all been great, and thanks to the AMA for all the wonderful help that I've received through the years. Duke Olliges Elgin,IL Olliges is the father of two professional motorcycle racers; Kevin Olliges is a Junior class dirt trackf1r, and Keith Olliges is' an Expert-ranked AMA/CCS road racer. Don't give up on Bayle In reference to Jean-Michel Bayle's road racing debut that some called "embarrassing," let's not forget that J.M. Bayle is a fierce competitor. He is a champion in a form of motorcycle racing that demands extraordinary skills. He is comfortable racing in close quarters and possesses phenomenal endurance and great strength. He also has the resources to "buy" whatever track time he needs to catch on. When he does, he will rise to the top quickly. Did you really believe that he or anybody else could be a contender the first time out? Who can you list who has? . David Goldstein· Tenafly, NJ Tietz Memorial Fund Thank you for ·printing my letter regarding the passing of our associate Brad Tietz. We've had good response for' his memorial fund and will provide his widow with a check for over $3000 this week. Robert Weber White Bros. IN THE WIND By Pap_aW_eal-----'--ey _ Continued from page 3 months, so it should be no problem for him to make the first Supercross of '93." Each October, Texas promoters Bob and Velma Bagwell host the last AMA-sanctioned half mile race of the season at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Dallas. This October is very different, as the Bagwells are promoting thr.ee, that's right, three back-to-back half mile races in Texas and billing them as the Texas Tripleheader. On Friday, October 16, Kilgore's Lone Star Speedway plays host to AMA Pro-Am and Amateur/Youth and AHRMA Vintage National racing. The following day, Saturday, October 17, the scene shifts to the east side of Dallas at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite for a $3000 Pro-Am National plus Amateur/Youth and AHRMA racing. The weekend concludes with the 8th Annual Devil's Bowl Race and Rally on Sunday, October 18. In addition to a full slate of racing, a swap meet and parade will highlight the day. For more information, call 214/216-5520. If you follow road racing, you know that Colin Edwards has received his share of publicity the last two years. But did you know that the Texas road racer's picture appeared in the December 1981 issue of Penthouse magazine? The "international magazine for men" ran a picture of a then six-year-old Edwards in motocross gear standing next to a trophy that dwarfed him. The story accompanied a fea.ture on motocross racing. Though Wayne Gardner bid farewell to Grand Prix racing with his second-place finish at the South African GP, it won't be his last motorcycle race. The Australian will be racing in the superbiker-style Guidon D'Or in Paris in October on a Rothmans Honda. In addition, he'll also be racing a BMW M-3 in two rounds of the German Touring Car Championship, on September 20 at the Nurburgring and October II at Hockenheim. The car is sponsored by ]aegermeister, a German liquor and soft drinks concern. Gardner will stay at the Hockenheim circuit following the race to test a factory Mercedes for two or three days. "They want to see how I get on after the races," Gardner said in Brazil. "There are no promises. We'll see what happens." Armin Hahne, one of the drivers on the ]aegermeister team, is a fellow resident of Monaco. American Flyers Road Racing Team has named former dirt tracker Mike Farley team manager. Farley is an airline pilot and instructor for American Flyers, the world's largest flight school. BORN: Kayla Michelle Martin, daughter of former AMA District, 29 motocrosser Lee Martin and his wife Ronda, in Kernersville, North Carolina, on September 8. MARRIED: Ted Hunnicutt ]r., Kawasaki Team Green off-road racer, to Cheryl Shockley, in Lakewood, California, on September 12. (;N
