had increased his lead to a comfortable margin, while a battle ensued behind him. Jon Slavey tried his best to take over second position from Stanley. On the: fourth lap Slavey made the pass, but was pushed back into third by Ryan Duff a few moments later. The moto ended with Nelson still in first and Duff in second. The second moto began with Mike Linginfelter getting the holeshot, but Nelson roared past him in a small whoop section to take the lead. Manchester manhandles Speedway Qualifiers By M. Sober VICfORVILLE, CA, SEPT. 5 Steve Lucero won the final round of the National Speedway Qualifier Series, but Chris Manchester emerged as the top rider overall. The six-round series deCided which 14 domestic riders will join two American British League regulars to compete in the ational Speedway Championships. The heat raang opened up with Gary Hicks, Mike Faria, Bart Bast and Lucero scoring predictable wins. The final two heats of the first round went to Rob Ball and Andy Northrup. Shawn McConnell opened up the second round by taking the checkered fla~ ahead of Brent Werner, who was participaung due to a dire need for points, despite sporting a broken jaw. Faria and Bobby Schwartz won over Hicks and Bast in the subsequent two races. Louis Kossuth used the inside starting lane to win over Lucero, and the pole also worked for Jeff Jones when he won his first race of the series. In the final heat race of the second round, Pfetzing won despite a serious late charge from Manchester. Werner secured himself a place in the National when he opened the last round of heat races with a win over Oxley and Pfetzing. Faria continued his perfect day with a win, and Bast, Lucero, Jesse Ochoa and Manchester nabbed the final winnin~ spots. The first semi contamed three riders in desperate need of points. McConnell needed a win to advance to the main and have a shot at one of the last spots in the Nationals. Ochoa was also on the bubble, and had to at least make it to the consolation race in order to have a chance. Gary Hicks won the first semi, with Ochoa putting in one of the best rides of his life to finish second. Schwartz made his fifth main in six tries when he beat Pfetzing in semi number two, and Lucero relegated Manchester to the consolation race when he won the third semi. Faria made his fourth-straight main, taking ·the win over Oxley. Oxley came in second in the consolation race to collect three more points and ensure his place in the National. Manchester made short work of the field and finished with a series-high 102 points. Lucero continued to dominate the starts, as he holeshot the main from lane one and rode to the victory.
