had increased his lead to a comfortable
margin, while a battle ensued behind him.
Jon Slavey tried his best to take over second
position from Stanley. On the: fourth lap
Slavey made the pass, but was pushed back
into third by Ryan Duff a few moments later.
The moto ended with Nelson still in first and
Duff in second.
The second moto began with Mike Linginfelter getting the holeshot, but Nelson roared
past him in a small whoop section to take
the lead. Linginfelter held on to the second
position and Nelson came in first, giving him
the moto and the overall victories.

Manchester manhandles
Speedway Qualifiers
By M. Sober
VICfORVILLE, CA, SEPT. 5
Steve Lucero won the final round of the
National Speedway Qualifier Series, but Chris
Manchester emerged as the top rider overall.
The six-round series deCided which 14
domestic riders will join two American British
League regulars to compete in the ational
Speedway Championships.
The heat raang opened up with Gary
Hicks, Mike Faria, Bart Bast and Lucero
scoring predictable wins. The final two heats
of the first round went to Rob Ball and Andy
Northrup.
Shawn McConnell opened up the second
round by taking the checkered fla~ ahead of
Brent Werner, who was participaung due to
a dire need for points, despite sporting a
broken jaw. Faria and Bobby Schwartz won
over Hicks and Bast in the subsequent two
races. Louis Kossuth used the inside starting
lane to win over Lucero, and the pole also
worked for Jeff Jones when he won his first
race of the series. In the final heat race of
the second round, Pfetzing won despite a
serious late charge from Manchester.
Werner secured himself a place in the
National when he opened the last round of
heat races with a win over Oxley and Pfetzing.
Faria continued his perfect day with a win,
and Bast, Lucero, Jesse Ochoa and Manchester
nabbed the final winnin~ spots.
The first semi contamed three riders in
desperate need of points. McConnell needed
a win to advance to the main and have a shot
at one of the last spots in the Nationals. Ochoa
was also on the bubble, and had to at least
make it to the consolation race in order to
have a chance.
Gary Hicks won the first semi, with Ochoa
putting in one of the best rides of his life to
finish second. Schwartz made his fifth main
in six tries when he beat Pfetzing in semi
number two, and Lucero relegated Manchester
to the consolation race when he won the third
semi. Faria made his fourth-straight main,
taking ·the win over Oxley.
Oxley came in second in the consolation
race to collect three more points and ensure
his place in the National. Manchester made
short work of the field and finished with a
series-high 102 points.
Lucero continued to dominate the starts,
as he holeshot the main from lane one and
rode to the victory. Hicks stayed down low
on Lucero's line and mana~ed to hold off
Faria and Schwartz, who fmished in that
order.
