~ LOCAL EVENTS Reed. Reed slammed the door and held on to win. "It seemed like forever before the white flag came out," said Reed. "I knew Mike would really push hard on the last lap." The crowd was ready for another great Jones-Reed battle as the second moto started, but the outcome of the race was decided in the first turn as Reed grabbed the holeshot only to slide out, through he didn't fall. While the inside was bottled up by Reed, Jones swooped by everyone, using an outside lane to take over first. Reed held second ahead of Poling, and Eickel again started out almost last Eickel tore through the pack, and with two laps to go, was in fourth place, where he stayed to the finish. On the last lap, the leader Jones was held up by a lapped rider and Reed closed the gap, but Jones was able to hold on for the victory and the overall win. Terlecki turned up the heat and passed Tivnan in the back section on lap two. Tivnan knew that second place was good enough for the win, but McKuhn passed Fabrick and set his sights on Tivnan. While Terlecki rode to the easy moto win, Tivnan managed to hold off McKuhn for second place and the overall win. Results 44 PIW: I. Joshua Phillips (Yam); 2. Ryan Barnes (Yam); 3. Patton Jr. ATHENS, OH, AUG. 15 Mike Jones paced the field at round three of the Coors Light Action Sports' Summer Supercross Series, blazing LO two overall wins at the Athens County Fair Supercross. Chuck Reed grabbed the holeshot at the start of the first 125cc Pro class moto. Scott Walkins and Jones followed with Jay Poling right behind them. Jones cleared the long infield triple jump to lake over second, and began to pressure Reed. By the third lap, Reed and Jones had pulled away from the field. Reed rode flawlessly despite Jones watching his every move and waiting for a mistake. James Eickel had made an incredible charge, working his way up from a last-place start to third place. When the white flag came out Jones went for the lead. He passed Reed on a tabletop in the infield but Reed block-passed him in the turn before thc;,. triples, taking back the lead position. )ones' last chance came in the turn after the triple and he tried ill dive under PORTLAND, OR, AUG. 'lI Round 19 of the Motocross Northwestsanctioned Thursday Night Series at Portland International Raceway saw Ed Pearson gamer the overall win in the 125cc Junior class. Moto one was a Pearson runaway. Taking the holeshot, Pearson had Tim Parker, B.J. Hansen, Ben Parker and Bill Rush in tow. Tim Parker held second place early on, but relinquished it to the battling duo behind him by the midway point. By lap four Ben Parker zoomed past Hansen in the back section, then he and Hansen both blitzed past Tim Parker on lap five for the second and third spots. Up front, Pearson pushed to a plus-IO-second win. Moto two saw a new face round tum one with the lead. Nathan Gravelle had experienced bike problems in moto one, but was on the gas for the second round. He was followed to the first turn by Pearson, Hansen and Ben Parker. Gravelle's lead was short-lived, as he once again dropped out with bike problems. Martin was right there to takeover the point position and with a clear track. ahead, he went on unscathed to the moto win. Hansen passed Pearson when Gravelle dropped out, but was docked a position in the final tally, for passing while the yellow flag was out. Martin scored the moto win, but Pearson's finish was good enough for the overall win. The 250cc Intermediate class saw Scott Sherrell and Tim Meissner hound Doug Gravelle in turn one of the first moto. Sherrell made an excellent pass at the top of the hill in a left-hand sweeper for the lead on the fourth lap. On lap four Meissner made his move just after the tower jump and held on to second to the flag. Sherrell won the moto. In moto two Gravelle held the point position again, while Sherrell went too hot into turn one. Sherrell grabbed a handful of throttle and reentered the track, but hit secondplace Meissner's rear tire and fell. Meissner picked up the pace and berserked it past Gravelle on lap four for the lead. The two front-runners battled into every turn to the finish with Meissner in front for the overall. Gravelle crossed the line a few feet behind in the runner-up spot. Results PIW: I. Norton nails·NETRA HS By Michel Snyder UNION, cr, AUG. 16 Team Mirage-sponsored Tommy Norton won first overall in round 10 of the New England Trail Riders Association's Hare Scrambles Series. The Connecticut Ramblers and the Springfield M.C., who co-promoted the event, laid out a 5.2-mile course for the 360 riders that braved the rainy weather to ride the event. Because of the wet conditions, the number of laps that the riders had to complete was reduced by one, with the Novice class riding four laps and the later classes completing six circuits. Bottlenecks were still a problem, however, as several hills caused back-ups and one even required the cow:se to be re-routed. Paul Milliken grabbed the early lead on his KTM, with Tommy Norton right on his rear fender. John Towslee trailed close behind in third. Milliken suddenly backed off when an old shoulder injury started to act up, forcing him to let Norton into the lead. As the racers rounded lap two, Norton had already built up a good advantage on secondplace Towslee. Towslee never got the chance to mount a serious challenge on Norton, as his front tire went flat. Ironically, Towslee had installed a foam insert in his rear tire. Several other riders also suffered from flat tires in the slippery rocks. . With Towslee's luck turning sour, Chris Crispin took over second place. Crispin Wso suffered a flat, though, while Norton continued to pull away out front. Crispin managed to maintain second place to the finish, despite a late charge-by pro motocrosser Randy McCann. Norton cruised ahead to the victory, and was already in his truck and changing'his clothes when runner-up Crispin rolled through the scoring barrels. "I had a good ride, considering the conditions," said Norton. "The course was okay until the last lap, when the rain really started coming down." Results AA: I. Chris Crispin; 2. Randy McCann; 3.
