Shimp shines at LACR MX By Greg Robertson PALMDALE, CA, AUG. 7 After fierce battles in both Vet Novice matos, Cycle Engineerin~sponsored Bob Shimp split moto wins with Rodney Morrison to take overall honors at the California Racing Club Answer Products Grab Bag Series opener at Los Angeles County Raceway. John Erickner rounded the first turn out front, but Morrison made a surprise pass and had the lead before the end of the first lap. For the second half of the mota, Shimp was all over Morrison looking for a way into the lead. At the finish line it was Morrison inches ahead of Shimp. Brickner held on to third just ahead of Alex Spinelli. The second mota quickly turned into a tworider showdown, as both Morrison and Shimp got around early leader Brickner within one lap. Shimp camped out on Morrison's rear fender watchin~ his every move. With the white flag in SIght, Shimp made his move and took over the lead. The final lap was a two-rider sprint to the finish with Shimp edging out Morrison at the checkered flag. Spinelli put in a great ride coming from back in the pack to finish in Brickner's shadow for fourth. For a while, Chuck Kober had clear sailing in the first 250cc Novice moto. Three turns into the race, second place rider John Keefer .went down causin'g Alan Kadlec and Mike Pichette to crash into him and block the entire track. Robert Weber shot past Kober into the lead two laps later and went on to take the checkered flag going away. Erik Kleven worked up through the field to finish second ahead o( Keith Katz and Tom McLaughlin. Keefer grabbed the second mota holeshot with John Valko and McLaughlin in tow. McLaughlin quickly displaced Valko to third and zeroed in on Keefer. The last couple of laps had Keefer and McLaughlin side by side fighting for the lead, Keefer got the slight advantage coming out of the final turn to take the moto win and overall. Keefer's 5-2 moto finishes edged out Kleven's 2-5 score for second overall. The battle lasted from start to finish between Jerry Martinez and Scott Howe in the first Pee Wee A race, with MartinezliteraUy winning it by a wheel. Howe totally ran away with the second mota when rival Martinez had uouble on the start resulting in a lO-second deficit. Howe scored the overall win with Martinez putting on a great show through the pack for third place and second overall. Results P/W A: I. ScOtl Howe (Vam); 2. Jerry Martinel (Vam); 3.
