Sassaman shows the way at Trail-Way ST By Len Breech Photo by Ben Breech HANOVER, PA AUG. 8 Eric Sassaman smoked the A classes at TrailWay Speedway. Sassaman looked set for the ever-elusive hat trick - three wins on three different machines. He had won the 750 and 600cc A finals and had easily topped the 250cc heat, but fell in turn one of the final. Sassaman put his Jim Chapman-sponsored Triumph into the lead at the start of the 750cc final with Paul Crumling, Clarence Bull and Joe Gately trailing. Bull took over second as they entered the first turn on the second lap, while Sassaman went on to earn his secondstraight win. Eddie Hidden jumped in front of Nick Taylor and Sassaman as the 600cc A final got under way, but by the end of the first lap, Sassaman was in his familiar place in front, while Hidden maintained a steady second. After losing to Harold Dorsey on the final lap of their heat, Ken Mohler put his Lancaster H-D-sponsored Harley in front o[ Dorsey, Rick Hawk and Dallas Baer at the start of the Pro class [inal, pulling away to win by a comfortable margin. Hawk [ell on about the fifth lap, setting the top four places. John Winsett led Nick Taylor, Jim Chapman and Joe Heberling out of the second turn as the Veteran class got under way. Taylor took the lead before the end of the lap, while Chapman got by Winse.tt for second on the third lap. Heberling pressured Winsett for third, taking O"9'er the position on the seventh lap. Taylor rode ahead to the win. Mike McKee put his Hannum H-DI Kawasaki-sponsored Kawasaki in front of Tom Skethway, Paul Allison and Donald Mullen in the 85cc class. With McKee and Skethway out in front, Mullen took over third on lap two, while Jake Johnson got rolling after a typically bad start. As they started the. sixth lap, Johnson took over third. McKee never relinquished his lead, holding on for the first-place prize. Results 26 750: I. Eric Sassaman (Tri); 2. Clar~nce Bull (Yam); 3. Paul Crumling (Hond); 4. Joe Gately (Tri); 5. I Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz won the first two of six events that will qualify riders for the United States National Speedway Championship, but S.cott Brant matched him on po_ints and the duo are deadlocked .for the lead in the series. The two events were held on consecutive nights at separate venues in northern California. At the opening event in Auburn's Gold Country Fairgrounds, Chris Manchester, Charlie Venegas, Bart Bast, Jesse Ochoa, Brant and Lotiis Kossuth each scored wins in' the first set of heat races. After the second round o[ heat races, Bast, Brant and Manchester all had perfect scores of six, while Schwartz experienced mechanical difficulties and was down on points. The final round of heat races saw Manchester extend his perfect night as he again won his race. Schwartz also won, and advanced to the semis. In the semis, Schwartz ended Manchester's perfect evening, and Rob P[etzing, Hicks and Kossuth all scored wins as well. After Brant won the consi, it was [inally time for the main event. Hicks lined up in position two next to pole-sitter HickS. Schwartz and Koss.uth were in spots three and four. As the gate was released, Hicks made his move, jumping out to an early lead. Exiting turn two, Pfetzing threw his hand in the air, signaling that his bike was dead. Schwartz accelerated past Hicks and into the lead out o[ turn two. Once out front Schwartz was the model of consistency, driving tight into the turns to prevent an inside pass, and drifting wide on the exits to block o[f what was left o[ a deteriorating outside line. The sellout crowd o[ 3500 thundered their approval as Hicks allempted tp pass [or the lead on each lap, but Schwaru held him on and scored the win. Though Schwartz had won the main event, Hicks had picked up enough points during qualifying that his scoreof 19 bested Schwartz' 17. On day two at the California State Exposition in Sacramento, a disappointing turnout o[ 860 saw Schwartz again overcome a slow start to top the field in the final event, on a track that many riders had difficulty adjusting to. Bobby Heden, Bast, John Aden, Brant, Manchester and Jess Ochoa all started the evening off right with wins in the first set o[ heats, while Brad Oxley finally claimed a heat win in the second round. The semi-finals were dominated by Schwartz, Manchester, Brent Werner aRd Brant, all of whom advanced directly to the main event. Hicks had to advance via the consi, and the [ield was set for the main. Schwartz turned the final event into a somewhat anticlimactic affair as he put together a quick gate and a series of strong laps to stave off any attempts by his competitors. As the younger riders began to close on the final lap, Schwartz held them of[ with a .MONTGOMERY, MN, AUG. 15 Paribault H-D/C&B Auto-backed Billy Ho[[miester rode flawlessly to score the Open Pro class win at Montgomery Speedway's shontrack oval. Two heat races set the stage for the main event. Eric Brouhard grabbed the holeshot in heat one and fended off the advances of Steve Champine. On lap two Champine pushed his Rotax past Brouchard to steal the win. Heat two provided plenty of action. Steve Kasten slid by early leader Hoffmiester at the completion of lap one, and held him off aU the way to the checkers. The main event proved to be a thriller. At the start, Champine grabbed the lead ahead o[ Hoffmiester, Brouchard and Randy Triplett. On the back straight Norb Gregory crashed his Honda in heavy traffic, bringing out the red £lag. Hoffmiester made the most of the restan and led the way into tum one ahead of Kasten, Verdeen Langland, Triplett, Todd Doughty, and Champine. By lap three, Champine moved ahead o[ Doughty, Triplett, and Langland and set his sights on Kasten. At the halfway point, Hof£miester had a five-bike length lead over Kasten and Champine. Meanwhile, a [our-man battle was taking place between Langland, Doughty, Hoe and Triplett. With two laps to go, Triplett worked his way around Hoe and Doughty and began to put the pressure on Langland. Hoffmiester went on to win over Kasten and Champine, with Triplett edging out Langland at the wire for fourth. Results MICRO MINI: I. Cohlman Rutschow (Yam); 2. Anthony Gardner (Yam); 3. Pepper pounds Calamity Pass Enduro By Roger Dowden RAND, CO, JULY 26 National Enduro Series contender Kelby Pepper returned to his native Colorado to top a field of over 300 riders at the Calamity Pass Enduro. Calamity Pass promoter Carl Watson was formerly an eastern enduro rider and is still a perennial Blackwater 100 entrant. His tastes are definitely reflected in the layout o[ this event. Calamity Pass features the tightest trails in the Rockies and a vast selection o[ motorcycle swallowing mudholes. This year Mother Nature lent Watson a hand in the form of an all morning downpour that produced a quality slime that would rival evtm Ohio's best efforts. Though Pepper ended up besting his closest competitor by three minutes, the KTM factory rider had no shortage o[ serious challengers. Chief amongst these was Steve Hatch who decided to use this event to test his Six Days machine before it was shipped [rom the nearby Moose Racing shop. The seventh check was (he first to rob any points [rom the top riders. Pepper, Hitch and the current series leader, John Blythe, dropped only one point here to top the rest. Nineteenyear-old Yamaha pilot Jim Gray was the only rider to zero this section, but unfortunately he had already collected two points via an earlier burn. Going into the 10th and final section, Pepper and Hatch had moved ahead o[ everyone, eac.h with a tally o[ four points. A battle to the finish never materialized as Hatch's Suzuki rolled to a stop just a few miles shy of the finish with an empty gas tank_ Finishing with a score of 11 points, Pepper related that he had a fairly uneventful day. "I had fun today. Riding on number two, I got lost a couple of times when I followed old trail rather than the arrows, but no other problems." Jim Gray, the youngest double A rider, nabbed second overall with a total of 14 while the oldest double A rider, Kevin Davis, was third with a score of 17. Pat Reynolds topped the Scratch main and Mark Maurer won the Handicap event after each held of[ charges by Jeff Tretara at Bear Creek Speedway. Reynolds won his first heat wire to wire_ Reynolds' next heat followed a 45-minute rain delay. Reynolds holeshot, but a gutsy pass by 20-year-old Kurt Cerwinsky had Reynolds settling for second. Maurer had a tough time in heat-race action after a crash in his first heat and a third-place finish his second time out. Maurer made the best of his consolation race and led from start to finish. . Tretara won both his heat races to start the Scratch as one o[ the favorites. As Reynolds wheelied on the start, Tretara grabbed the holeshot. Reynolds was chasing, and Cerwinsky dropped it in turn one and took John Vasil along with him. Though Cerwinsky was uninjured, a split gas tank finished his night early. Vasil made the restart but was left behind as Tretara and Reynolds went handlebar to handlebar right from the stan. Tretara went for broke on the final lap, going hard into turn three. Tretara crashed, and Reynolds took the checkered flag alone. Tretara stood in turn four as teammate John Vasil passed to claim second. Vasil started the Handicap from the 20 and led past the halfway mark, when he slid out and dropped out of the top three. Maurer, Tretara and Reynolds all slipped by before Vasil could get headed in the right direction. Once in the lead, Maurer was able to handle the pressure of-'rretara and Reynolds. Tre.tara took to the inside as they headed for the finish, but Maurer held on [or the close win. Results SCRATCH: I. Pat Reynolds; 2. John Vasil; 3. jeH Tretara; 4. Kurt Cerwinsky. HDCP: I.
