So, I headed to Ohio, gear in hand, hoping that these women would give me a chance to ride. When I arrived, I spoke with Letha Jeffers, the owner of the team. I explained to her that I didn't have too many races under my belt, and to my surprise, she agreed to let me ride. Because of these women, I had the most fun I have ever had in a single race weekend. Sure, the riding was a blast (especially at night), but the team was what made everything so great. Everyone was supportive, had a great attitude, and was just genuinely nice. They seemed to be just as pleased with me and my riding, enough so to invite me to ride in the four-hour endurance at Indianapolis. It will be great to ride with them once again. So, thank you, Letha Jeffers, Cathy Creighton, Nancy Delgado and Lori Dutzman of Team Rapid Fire for letting me participate in 'the history making. And thanks also to Kenny Abbott and Darryl Saylor, to New York Motorcycles, L&M Racing Supply, Ed Bargy, the WERA officials and cornerworkers, and everyone else that took part in our little crusade. All of your help and support is greatly appreciated. Without you, there isn't any way we would have done so well. Alanna Davis Herndon, VA , Team Rapid Fire finished fourth in the Middleweight Superbike class and 17th overall at Nelson Ledges ... Editor. Cool dudes Your Unadilla 250cc MX GP coverage in the July 29 issue included a picture of Donny Schmidt with a caption that reads: "Schmidt pulled a muscle in his neck, and iced it between each moto." The item around Donny's neck is a new product called Cool Sports. Cool Sports can be used either for direct cooling for injuries or for gradual cooling to help the body relieve heat stress (depending on how it is worn). Riders who used Cool Sports between motos (at Unadilla) included Trampas Parker, Mike Healy, Keith Johnson, Rob Herring, Jamie Dobb, Bader Manneh, Doug Henry, John Dowd and Jim Kapitan. Privateers Kurt McMillen, Pat Barton, Jim McIlvane, Bruce Stratton and John Slater tested Cool Sports during the G P and 125cc Support class races. Feedback from all riders was very positive. David W. Stevens Cool Sports Arlington, VA Cool Sports can be contacted at 401 12th St., #817, Arlington, VA 22202 (703/418-2725). They were on hand at last weekend's NMA Grand Nationals in Ponca City, Oklahoma, and will be at the AMA Amateur Nationals at Loretta Lynn's and at the WERA Pocono Cycle Jam . .. Editor. Schwarzbach Memorial Fund Larry Schwarzbach was a valued member of the Vance & Hines race team for the past two years, and, because of his love for motorcycling, Yamaha is establishing a memorial fund in his name with the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute. Additional information will be released in the next couple of weeks on how you can make a donation to the Larry Schwarzbach fund. All of us at Yamaha will dearly miss Larry and his exceptional enthusiasm. Jim Gentz Senior Vice President Motorsports Group Yamaha Motor Corp., U.S.A. Cypress, CA No I8-wheeler, but ... Now that the controversy that comes along with the annual picking of the American Motocross des Nations team has begun to rear its ugly head, I have come up with a plausible solution. Kawasaki can step in and send a team of its own riders, much like what Honda has done a number of times throughout the course of the American winning streak. Jeff Matiasevich, who looked strong at the Glen Helen U.S. 500cc GP, would ride the big-bore. Mike Kiedrowski, the middleweight class, and Mike LaRocco, who has shown wi~ning consistency in the highly competitive 125cc class, would fill out the team. I know they probably could not show up in Australia with their plush 18-wheeler, but it sure would be a true American representation of Team Green.
