Belew/Smith top Superstition 250 desert race By Bob Bell Transue ran second and had Hageman, Sloboda, Bray and Larry Jones at bay early on. Transue quickly picked up the pace and motored past York through the whoops at the end , of lap one for the lead. Once in front, Transue set a blistering pace that took him to an over-30-second win. On, lap two, Hageman grabbed too much throttle exiting' turn two with Caulkins breathing down his exhaust pipe. Getting a little squirrely, Hageman got real sideways and' Caulkins hit his swingarm. Both riders hit the deck. Caulkins was trapped under his machine and Hageman's bike was stuck wide open. Hageman crawled over and hit the kill switch, then got up and picked Caulkins' machine off him and made sure he was alright. The duo both restarted and ~ed 'away. Hageman was passed only by Jones and Ngvyen in the mishap. By lap five, Hageman screamed back past the duo to garner fourth. York and Sloboda held their positions to the flag to net second and third, respectively. Dave Coupe brought his Mazaferro . Husky-backed machine to wage war in the 30-40 year old Expert and Open Expert classes. Coupe enjoyed a clean CN sweep in all four motos. Results 26 FRIDAY 80 BEG D-I: I. Jason Hensen EL CENTRO, CA, AUG~ I The Team Green boys, Dewey Belew and Craig Smith, proved unstoppable as they ran of[ with their second overall victory in a row at the Budweiser/Bud Light/Bud Dry Superstition 250 Desert Team Race. Team Green's Paul Krause was out to make it three for three in the Superstition Series. A win at this double-P.Qints event would nearly lock the series championship for him. With a 26-mile loop that consisted or mostly high-speed cross-country running, the open bikes were the odds-on favorite. A good start would be mandatory as the 6 a.m. bomb run had no wind to blow the dust away. Krause's day was over almost before it started. Problems set in and he didn't even make it to check point one. Leading at the first check, however, was the Yet team of Phil and Jimmy Means from Arizona. They were followed closely by the Belew/Smith team. A tight battle had already developed for the 250cc lead between the Rick and John Flores Kawasaki team and the Neil Goldsmith/Sal Garcia Yamaha team. At the end of the first lap, the Means brothers ran snong out front. Belew and Smith trailed in second. The Flores brothers continued to fight for the 250cc lead at third overall, with Goldsmith and Garcia in fourth. Ed Foland and Jason Cof[man led the 125cc class, with Brent Coleman and Robbie Fippin a close second. The second lap had the Heawe brothers still leading, but the Belew/Smith team was closing in. Goldsmith and Garcia took a turn leading the 250cc class with the Flores brothers right behind. In the 125cc class, Justin Hoffman and Bob Bell came blitzing up from a third-row sportsman start to take over second in class, right behind Coffman and Feland. John Bilkey and Mike Harder were stomping the Senior division, nearly 3'0 positions ahead o[ their nearest competitors. . On lap three, the Means brothers finally gave way to Belew and Smith. This leadchange would be the last one, as Belew and Smith set sail and disappeared. Team Flores took back the 250cc lead and pulled a small margin on the Goldsmith/Garcia team. As the race wore on, most of the top positions were stabilized. Belew and Smith were out front, Team Means controlled second, and Team Flores pulled clear with the 250cc lead. In the l25cc division, Hollman and Be-ll's surge to the front was cut short when Bell fell victim to a stomach flu. This left a tired Hollman to ride the remaining laps on his own. On the eighth and fi,!al lap, the Flores brothers fell victim to mechanical problems and their 200cc class win went up in smoke. Tim Belew and Yon Mederis moved into second in the l25cc class with Cullman and Pippin right behind after fighting back from a bad crash. When the checkered flag flew, it was Belew and Smith with the overall and Open class victories. The Means brothers maintained second to the finish for the Yet class win. Goldsmith and Garcia found themselves with third overall and first 250cc Pro. Those three teams were the only ones to complete all eight laps. Foland and Coffman hung on for the win in the l25cc Pro class at seventh overall. In the Senior cla~s, it was all Bilkey and Harper. They ran well inside the top 15 before settling into their finishing position of 18th. Results O/A: I. Dewey Belew/Craig Smith; 2. Phil MeanwJimmy Means; 3. Neil Goldsmith/Sal Garcia; 4. John Flores/Rick Flores; 5. Ed Foland/Jason Coffman. . Mosley masters Marysville MX By John Silva MARYSVILLE, CA, JULY 25 Kenny Mosley scored wins in both l25cc Beginner motos in Saturday night's CMC competition at Riverfront Park. Mosley has been plagued by poor starts in past events at Riverfront, but his jinx ~e to an end wi th a holeshot in moto one. Mosley timed the gate perfectly and secured the lead into the first turn. David Lodermeier was second, followed by Lawrence Morolos, Josh Kalamaras and Chris Weatherbee. Mosley was radical on the first lap, and had a five-second lead at the start of lap two. Lodermeier took a tumble in the back section, which allowed Morolos to inherit second. As the race progressed, Weatherbee passed Kalamaras to take oyer third, and Chris Ronan moved into fifth. Out front, Mosley continued to build a lead, and took the checkered flag an entire straightaway ahead of second place Morolos. The battle was closer for third, but Weatherbee held on over Kalamaras and Case. In the second moto, Mosley's reflexes were even sharper. Mosley gated perfectly, and blasted out of turn one well ahead of second place Case. Kalamaras, Weatherbee and Morolos diced it out for the remaining top positions. Kal.amaras slid past Case in the scoring-area hairpin, and put a little bre-dthing room between his SUluki and the rest of the field. Mosley's aggressive style helped him build a good lead at the halfway point, but second-place Kalamaras stayed on the gas and continued to give chase. Meanwhile, Case, Weatherbee and Morolos raced wheel-to-wheel, with Morolos making his move on the final lap to take over third. Mosley cruised the last lap, which allowed Kalamaras to narrow Mosley's lead. His effort came up short, as Mosley crossed the line for first several bike lengths in front of Kalamaras. Morolos earned second overall with a second~ moto third. Weatherbee finished a dose fourth with Case fifth. Results 125 PRO: I. Michael Brades (Suz); 2. Eric Duaay (Hon); 3.
