involved in a bitter fight over third place that
carried them closer and closer to Nelson. For
several laps, everyone was watching the battle
for third and paying no attention to the leader
Gomm.
Suddenly, on lap nine, Gomm came to an
abrupt halt with a broken chain. Gomm sat
dejectedly on the side of the track for several
seconds before Nelson finally came by to take
the lead. Once into first place, Nelson set a
steady pace that tl:te riders battling over third
could not match. The top four riders remained
Nelson, Paladino, Holland, and Bennett for
the next several laps.
On lap 16, Paladino laid it down coming
out of the. tunnel and dropped to fourth.
Holland and Bennett continued their battle
for the next three laps before Bennett also went
down in the same corner as Paladino. With
Bennett no longer c:lose, Holland put on a
late charge that took him to within a few bike
lengths of the leader. When the checkered flag
came out; Nelson notched the win over
Holland and Bennett. Filling out the top five
was Paladino in fourth and a steadily
improving Robbie Baker in fifth.

McElroy scoots to El Dorado
Fair Motocross win
By Nuklear Neukam
PLACERVILLE, CA, JULY 30
Great Northern Promotions brought moLOcross racing to the El Dorado County Fair'
with a special Thursday night event at
Placerville Speedway .that was sponsored by
Mike's Cycle, Performance Cycle, Carmichael
Honda, Roseville Cycle, Yoko and many other
shops. GP Racing/Works Connection/Yuba
City Suzuki-sponsored Scooter McElroy
claimed the overall in both the 125 and 250cc
Pro classes.
The 125cc Pro class was a: match race
between McElroy and Honda-mounted Eric
DuCray. The first moLO was all McElroy, as
he stayed ahead of DuCray from the drop of
the gate to the wave of the checkered.
Moto two started much the same as the first,
but DuCray was more aggressive this time out
and kept tl!e pressure on McElroy. DuCray
passed McElroy at one point, but McElroy
regained the lead and continued to earn the'
moLO and overall wins.
As the first 250cc Pro moLO roosted into
action it loo~ed LO be John Stark's night as
he put his Suzuki into the lead and held
it to the end. The hot action, however, LOok
place behind him as Pat Go~m moved up
through the field. 'Late in the moto, Gomm
advanced to third behind Shawn Freiling,
the hometown boy who claimed the crowd's'
support.
Gomm was obviously faster than Freiling,
but was finding it tough to find a hot line
past him. As the last lap grew near, Gomm'
found it necessary to let it all hang out and,
after a little bump and grind session, his efforts
were successful as he advanced LO second where
he stayed to the checkered. McElroy recovered
from a dismal start to finish third. The two'
Suzukis of Jimmy Robertson and Ron Allen
rounded out the top five.
Stark again set the pace asmoto two began,
but this time Gomm was hot on his tail with
McElroy shadowing in third. A couple of laps
inLO the moto, Stark got extremely sideways
in a left-hander and, as Gomm caught his rear
wheel, McElroy railed the outside line and
smoked into the lead. Gomm quickly recovered and gave chase for second. Gomm closed
in and offered a formidable challenge, but
McElroy would not be denied his glory as he
held for the win and the overall. Gomm
claimed second overall while Stark finished
third for the same overall. Robertson, who
. was competing for the first time in IS-months,
was again fourth and fourth overall.

Nelson nails Bounty Hunter MX
By Tom Prichard
LOS BANOS, CA, AUG. I
Todd Nelson established himself as the rider
to beat in the Bounty Hunter Series by
winning his third main event in front of a
crowd of over 2000 excited spectators at the
Los Banos Fairgrounds. In winning, Nelson
moved into the series points lead with only
three events left to go. .
The Northern California championship
and the number one Pro plate for 1993 is going
to be a heated battle all the way to the wire,
as the current number one rider, Pat Bennett,
is only one point behind Nelson. Bennett
could only finish third behind Nelson and
Rusty Holland, and after the night's event was
pretty well banged up from crashes in his
250cc Pro qualifier and the Bounty Hunter
main event.
!,!elson started the night off by posting the
win in the first 250cc. qualifying moto, and
.backed that up with a solid third in the second
for the overall win. The second moto was won •
by Bennett, but a crash in moto one held the
,Suzuki rider LO fifth overall. Bennett's second
moto win was the fastest of the night, however,
and earned him the 10th pface starting
position on the line for the main event.
Int he 125cc Pro qualifiers Rusty.Holland
used a pair of consistent second place finishes
to bag. the win and the eighth position on
the starting line, just ahead of Nelson.
When the flag dropped for the start of the
20-lap main event, Pat Gomm jetted into the
lead, ahead of Mike Mennig and John Cook.
On lap two, Nelson moved inLO fifth, followed
by Dan Paladino. Mennig experienced bike
problems and by the thitd lap had faded out
. of contention.
In the meantime, Gomm had been busy
stretching his lead over the rest of the riders.
By the fifth lap, Gomm had a 10-second lead
over second place, who, by this time was
Nelson. Paladino, Bennett and Holland were:

Kasten clobbers Cambridge ST
By Tim McBride
CAMBRIDGE, MN, JULY 23
S-K Service/Spectro Oil/Cliffs Cycle Servicesupported Steve Kasten sped to victory in the
Open Pro .class during the fifth round of the
Dirt Track Riders Association's Championship Short Track Series, held at the Isanti
County Fairgrounds_
Two heats set the stage for the main event.
Heat winners Kasten and Eric Brouhard
enjoyed picking the first two starting positions on the grid. As the class thundered into
the first turn, it was Kasten out front with
Kurt Boelke, Billy Hoffmiester, Brouhard and
Mike Hoe in tow. By the end oflap two, Kasten
stretched his lead to a few bike lengths over
second place contenders Boelke, and
Hoffmiester:
Meanwhile, Brouhard, Hoe, Doug Obert,
and Randy Triplett argued over the fourth
through sixth spots. On lap five, Obert
"squeezed by Hoe for fifth .. while Triplett fell
unhurt in tum four on lap six. The order
stayed the same for the remainder of the race,
with Kasten scoring the win over Boelke and
Hoffmiester.
. In the B Cash Dash, Jason Larson grabbed
the early lead, but Tim Gregory and Chris
Perman dispatched the 14-year-old rider by
the end of lap one. Gregory and Perman
battled furiously, while Tim Zemanovic
pressed Larson for third. On lap three,
Zemanovic slid underneath Larson. At the
wire, Gregory held on for the win over a hardcharging Perman with Zemanovic, Larson
and Tom Ladwig in their wake.
The Beginner main provided plenty of
action. John Peterson and Glenn Law entered
tum one first, with Mike Ledin and Steve Koch
in tow. By the end of lap one, Law possessed
the lead with his Martha's Ice Racing
teammate, Koch, moving by Peterson and
Ledin for second. As the laps ticked away,
Ledin pushed his Yamaha past Peterson for
third. At the checkers, 'it was Law, followed
by Koch, Ledin, Peterson, and Phil
Lambrought. •

Azavedo awesome at Pioneer
Stadium Motocross
.By Nuklear Neukam
OAKDALE, CA, AUG: I
Riding like a man on a mission, Jack Azavedo
piloted his Malcolm Smith/Mallott's/DH
Cycles/Bill's Pipes/Dad'-sponsored Yamaha
to the 250cc Pro victory at round two of the
Pioneer Speedway and Arena GFI Hi-Point
Summertime Fun Series. Mark Wemyss took
his Moto World/Cyco Mike-backed Suzuki to
the winner's circle in the 250cc Novice class,
while Honda-mounted Steve Swisher claimed
two class wins as he dominated both the Vet
Junior and the 250cc Beginner contingents.
In the first 250cc Pro moto, Azavedo came
out of turn one locked in a heated battle with
Honda-mounted Mike Newman as Steve
Lawrence settled his Honda into third ahead
of Yamaha-mounted Doug Barham. Newman
mounted a formidable challenge for a few laps
but Azavedo was on the'gas and by midmoto,
was beginning to pull out a le
