$ -Scratch heats were used, that were worth three points to the winner, two for second, one for third and zero for fourth. Normally the event winner is determined by the total number of points he accumulates during his five heats. However, for the last couple of years the promoters have added a fourlap winner-take-all main event that has been met with approval by the fans, if not always by the riders. Tl\e first round of four heat races began with "Suicide" Scott Brant running away from the field to collect the first three points. Chris Manchester and Faria followed suit in events two and three. Three-time Penhall Classic winner Schwartz lost his muffler in lap two and was disqualified. Greg Hancock, making a brief return visit to the states from England, won the final heat of the opening round to take the win away from a faltering Hicks. The second round went as the first had, with Brant earning a decisive win. Hicks won the next heat despite theefforts of Manchester, Schwaru and Brent Werner. Faria kept his perfect score alive with an easy win in event seven. Hancock dominated his second ride, after pulling off an incredibly quick start. The third round of heats began with a lineup that could easily pass for a main event anywhere. Hancock, Faria and Brant who were all sporting perfect scores of six points, took to the track with point-hungry Manchester. Hancock got another rocket start and held off Manchester and Brant for the win. Faria suffered a disqualification for losing his chain guard in the heat's middle laps. Werner climbed onto the winners' board with the victory in event 10. Hicks held off Charlie Venegas to win, while Schwaru found fortune in the final heat of the third round. Hicks continued to take wins away from the front-runners in round four, as he bested Brant despite the latter's wild swooping outside drives that got him past third-place finisher Shawn McConnell. Faria got back on track in event 14, taking the three points over second-place finisher Werner. Hancock was next up with 'the meeting's only perfect score, which he easily maintained ahead of Schwaru and John Aden. Manchester continued his comeback from his round-two fall, taking the top spot ahead of Venegas and Gary Ackroyd. The final round started with Brant gaining himself a berth in the main event with another three-point win, which gave him a five-ride total of 12 points. Hancock continued his perfect day with the victory in event 18. Manchester finished strong with a win over Aden and McConnell, but fell one point shy of matching Brant's score. Faria was able to cool Hicks off in the final heat of the night, which insured that both riders would make the main. Hicks had 13 points, while Faria matched Brant's 12. Hancock got the right to pick the starting lane of his choice in the main, and chose gate four. Hicks had the second pick and chose the pole. Faria won the flip with Brant and took three, leaving lane two for his Russell Racing . teammate. Hicks took a decisive gate and put together four flawless laps for the win. Faria put on a series of assaults, with Brant trying to run up the middle, but neither rider was able to seriously challenge Hicks, who dominated the event to the finish.
