O'Callaghan boogied to the win in both Open Novice motos to secure the overall with Paul Hanson second overall. Aaron Phillips took third overall with Brian Canright and Albert Doyce rounding out the top five, respectively. The highlight of the day was Pee Wee Stock winner Christopher Guarjardo who conquered "Gravity Cavity" for the first time. Proving to all that witnessed that once fear is overcome confidence will be your guide. Guarjardo sat at the top of the Cavity in molO one, while his dad encouraged tlim from below. After much hesitation, six-year-old G uarjardo began his decen t and, to the roaring cheers of the assembled masses, came though like a true winner. In molO two, Guarjardo went through the Cavity twice, each time with less apprehension and stronger confidence in his ability. Results 125 C 0·1: I. Ben Vitale (Yam); 2. Michael Demaree (Kaw); 3. Nelson top gun in Los Banos MX By Tom Prichard LOS BANOS, CA, JULY 4 Suzuki-mounted Todd Nelson won his first Bounty Hunter main event of the season at the Los Banos Fairgrounds. Nelson, who was lined up in ninth place in the single-file start, took the lead on lap 10 of the 20-lap race and held on for the win. Ron Allen grabbed the lead off the start. Allen, who was the final rider to qualify, was followed by Jeff Pestana, who immediately moved up from a midpack'starting position. Having started ninth and 10th, Nelson and Pat Bennell found the going tough lor the first three laps as everyone was bunched close together. On lap four Bennell's charge to the front was cut short, as he fell while trying 10 pass Pestana. Both riders went down, and Pestana appeared dazed. Remounting quickly, Bennett jumped .right in front of John Cook and was again knocked to the ground, remounting in last place. In the meantime, Nelson had moved himself into fifth behind Danny Paladino. Robbie Baker came alive and took the lead from Allen, who started to fade back. Baker was soon followed by Rusty Holland and Paladino. Baker held the lead for two laps before crashing hard and calling it a night. Holland inherited the lead, but was soon passed by both Nelson and Paladino. Once into the lead on lap 10, Nelson rode strong for the next 10 laps to take the win. Results BOUNTY HUNTER: I. On lap two, McClintock dispatched Kreeger, but couldn't stop Amerine from increasing his lead. At the finish line, it was Amerine first, followed by McOintock and Kr~ger. Danny Rutherford took first in the Beginner class, while a well-earned second went to Carey Wilder. Exciting racing was also found in the 80cc Beginner class. Nicolleue Harris holeshot the first moto and piloted her Yamaha in for first over Jeremie Graham. Between motos, Nicolette commented, "This is my first race at Riverfront, and I really like the track. It's long for a night track and very fast." Bailey wins Ponderosa Motocross opener By Barbara and Loren Williams MARSHALL, NC, JULY 5 Darrell Bailey won the 250cc B and Unlimited Amateur classes at the inaugural race of Ponderosa MX Park, blasting out of the gate to grab the holeshot on every start and leading every lap of his four motos. Nearly 80 riders converged just outside Marshall, ·North Carolina, for the opening event, under' cloudy skies that· kept racing conditions at a reasonable temperature. Nestled in a bowl-shaped valley, Ponderosa takes advantage of natural terrain. The European-style track features soaring uphills, drop-offs, natural jumps and plenty of tricky turns. From the hills surrounding the track, specl?lOrs enjoy a good view of most of the orCUl.t. Timmie Bowman and Mike Lee provided excitement during the first 25+ B class moto when Bowman grabbed the holeshot and held on despite repeated challenges by Lee throughout the moto. Bowman roared across the finish a mere wheel-length ahead to take the first-round win. Mechanical difficulties slowed him in moto two, however, and the win and overall victory went to Lee. Greg Hendrix leaped his old -bike to the front in the first moto of the. combined 125cc ClNon-Current field but was quickly overpowered by the newer machines of the 125cc C class. Hendrix dropped to fourth in: the field, though still first in the Non-Current class and cruised the rest of the way ahead of Max McElrath's 1974 Honda CR125. Finishes in the Non-Current class second moto were identical to the first, with th'e only difference being that McElrath's placing was in doubt. Halfway through the molO he began to notice handling problems and discovered that his right shock had broken. Flogging his vintage machine on to the finish, McElrath hung on to the second sI,>Ot over Jeff Allman. Results. 4-STRK MINI: I. Taylor LeVeck (Hon); 2. Justin Higgins (Hon); Rusty Murray (Hon).
