Sober Photo by Jim Thorn SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JULY I "Suicide" Scott Brant took top honors in both the Handicap and Scratch main events at Glen Helen's Wednesday Night Speedway. Jim Estes ran away with the win in the Support class main, while the Sidecar victory was claimed by the team of Steve StantonlTom Tufts. Brant started the Scratch main from the· third slot, two places to the right of pole-sitter Mike Faria, and sandwiched between Gary Hicks in two and Chris Manchester on the outside in four. National Champion Faria was the first to get off the line with Manchester right on his tail riding the deep outside dirt. Manchester med to grab the lead but lost control and went down by the crash wall. As Faria was staying outside trying to keep Manchester at bay, Brant and Hicks were on the fast low line, trying to push past the leaders. By the end of lap two Manchester had succumbed to the deep dirt and Faria drifted too wide in tum four, allowing Brant to slip his Russell Racing/Vent Goggles/Prime Ticket/Event Tech Services-backed Jawa into the lead. Faria pulled down in time to pinch off Hicks and stay in second place but could not reel in Brant. Despite his success in Scratch racing, the Handicap portion of the program is where Brant really shone. Since the recent allowance of the 22-inch rear wheel. Brant has dominated the Handicap races from as far back as the 6O-yard line. The 23-year-old racer took over the lead on lap three and was never challenged thereafter. John Aden took second spot away foom fellow 30-yard handicapper Jesse Ochoa on lap six, and kept it to the finish. Results SCRATCH: I. Scott Bran. (Jaw); 2. Mike Faria (GM); 3. Gary Hicks (GM); 4.
