Knott scores at Outlaw Nationals Short Track By Brent Menser 32 MAYFIELD, KY,jUNE II DRAFFENVILLE, KY, JUNE 12 MAYFlELD, KY, JUNE 13 Josh Knott earned a hard-fought win in the 85cc class during the first day of competition at the Western Kentucky Competition Riders Association-promoted Outlaw Nationals, a three-day event held at the Mayfield Fairgrounds and the TK Short Track. Riders competed at the Mayfield half mile on Thursday and Saturday, and tried their hand at short track on Friday. On Thursday, Knott, riding a Suzuki of Paris-sponsored machine had an easy heat win in the 85cc class. The main proved to be very different for the 12-year-old speedster. After a bad start, Knott chased down the leading trio of Jenny Hayden, Roger Hayden and Jason Goodwin. Knott was able to pass through the corners, but was at a distinct disadvantage down the straightaways due to the much smaller size of the Haydens. After five laps of this, people were seen droppig their wrenches in the infield to watch. Josh finaUy got an advantage that he maintained and held on for a very popular win. Tommy Hayden scored a runaway win in the Sportsman main, riding his Shoei/ TsubakilRecil Hart-sponsored Rotax. Brother Nikki had to fend o££ a spirited charge from Paul Lynch to take the 200cc main event. The Open class main saw John Faul1c.ner and Chris Boone battling hard for second, while Tommy Hayden motored away from both of them. Several hand-held radar guns had the aspiring road racer at 97 mph at the end of the straightaway. David Flowers rode his Suzuki to a hardfought victory over John Gilligan in the Senior class. On Friday, the traveling show moved to the D-shaped TK Speedway. The track seemed to favor. the local riders, as many of those from out of state had a di££icult time. Paul Lynch refused to be intimidated by the track, or the locals, and battled with Nikki Hayden in the 200cc heat and main event. After taking the white £lag in the main, Lynch was ahead of Nikki by a wheel length. As the two started down the backstretch, most observers knew what was coming. Lynch took his normal line, but Hayden kept coming on the low side. Hayden couldn't quite make it stick and skittered through tum four. Lynch took the checkered £lag. TT Scrambles, easily taking the 250 and 600cc A finals. Also taking double wins was Donald Mullen in the 65 and 85 B classes. Sassaman jumped into the lead of the 250cc A final as they headed for the infield portion of the track, and was never pressured after they came out of the right-hander in the infield. Following him were Bill Bromley, Kevin Miller and Todd Winsett, but Sassaman began to pull away and easily scored the win. The 600cc A final was similar, although Mark Burkholder was in second, with Bromley and Jack Franklin trailing. Burkholder stayed close to Sassaman for most of the six-lap race, but couldn't get around. Burkholder had to survive a restart to win his Veteran 30+ final. Harold Brossman held the lead at the start, with Burkholder, Ken Hackman, Luke Zechman, and Richard Washak following. Zechman took over third as.they exited the infield on the opening lap. On lap three, Burkholder slipped under Brossman for the lead when Brossman went high in the fourth turn. Zechman carried a little too much speed into the first turn and got up in the loose stuff, ending any hope of moving up to challenge Burkholder. Zechman jumped in front of Carl Campbell, Billy Bromley and Earl Yearick. Campbell stayed in second until he got into the first turn too fast and lost several places. Mike McKee jumped out in front of the combined85ccA&Bfinal, with John Winsett, Tom Skethway and Donald Mullen followin~. At the completion of the opening lap, Wmsett had taken control of the lead, while Mullen had gotten under Skethway as they entered the first turn on the second lap. The top four stayed close until the last lap when McKee fell in the infield right-hander. Results 55 STK: I. Cody Wenger (It); 2. Josh Zechman (Yam); 5. jared Mes (Itj); 4. Kevin Mormon (Yam): 5. LaMastus unstoppable at Fossil Bowl Motocross By Butch Phamess CLARKlA, ill, JULY 4-5 Jimmy LaMastus and his Suzuki were unstoppable at round seven and eight of the Fossil Bowl MX Series, which also happened to be the Idaho State Championship race. On Saturday, moto one of the 80cc 12-16 class saw LaMastus p~ll the holeshot over Oregon's Jessey Williams. Williams tried everything to get by LaMastus as the cr9wd went crazy. As they approached the shakers, Williams made the pass by taking an unusual line. LaMastus didn't give up as he kept the heat on, and passed Williams as they started up Devil's Drop. Williams continued to sta1lc. LaMastus and finally ~ot his chance. Corning o££ the tabletop, Williams had a better line into the corners and over took LaMastus, who repassed Williams in the next corner. With two laps to go, LaMastus' front end washed out, causing him to go down and let Williams by. It looked like Williams had the moto win, until he too, crashed and LaMastus got back out in front to stay. Moto two featured another LaMastus holeshot with Williams in hot I?ursuit. Williams kept a front wheel there In every corner trying his hardest to pass LaMastl~s, but had no luck as LaMastus went on to wm the moto. On day two, the track was run in me opposite direction. Moto one of the 80cc 1216 class saw LaMastus pull the holeshot again with Williams right behind. LaMastus went on to win his moLO more easily than he had on Saturday. . LaMastus got the holeshot again in moLO two, while Williams again followed right behind. As they jumped o££ Devil's Drop, Williams swooped by LaMastus, who stayed close until he went down. Williams went on to win the moto and score the win for the day, but the Championship went to LaMastus with three moto wins and a second. Results SATURDAY , AUTO: 1. jeremiah Wright (lti); 2. Shults BARABOO, WI, JUNE 28 Dave Rorschneider, fresh from notching his first National win, showed the form that has made him one of the top trials riders in the midwest. Baraboo is an area that attracts rock climbers from several states, but 32 trials riders came out to show how to climb rocks without the aid of ropes. Twenty-one sections challenged the go-slow crowd on a warm, sunny afternoon at Baraboo.' The Expert and Championship class sections were especially tough. 'These aren't sections," one expert announced midway through the first loop. "They are meat grinders'" The heat also got to many riders. Instead of scores going down on successive loops, they tended to go up. One nice touch was a water jug tied to a tree halfway around the threemile loop. Rorschneider showed the tenacity that put him on top of the Senior 30 class at the Nationals in Colorado a month earlier. He seemed to levitate his 'Fantic up some of the rock ledges that made up most of the sections. Noel Sma~, also on a Fantic, finished 16 points behmd Rorschneider. New at Baraboo was the Senior Novice class. This is a class for riders over 40, many of whom had dropped out of trials and have now returned to the sport. The class uses most of the novice sections and a couple of the junior sections. John Wellenstein rode his Yamaha to an II-point victory in the class, while Stan Webster placed second. Webster towed his trials bike to the event on a BMW street bike. The loop at Baraboo was three miles long and featured some rock-strewn spots along the way. Nick Wellenstein, who took second in the Novice class said, "I took more dabs on the loop than I did in the sections."
