Pollard pounds Bakersfield TT By Laura Tisinger BAKERSFIELD, CA, JU E l~ Brian Pollard smoked the 600cc TT competition at Bakersfield Speedway, claiming the win after a fifth-place heat finish. Allan Urias bauled Sid Payne and jeff Brindle to claim the 600cc Oval victory. The 600cc TT heat one race was fast and wheel-to-wheel. jack jones snagged the holeshot, fighting off Steve Varble and Payne. Payne was on the throttle and pushing hard, and by lap three had grabbed the lead on the back straight. Pollard moved through the pack from fifth to third, but Payne claimed the heat win with jones a close second. Pollard, jones, Urias and Douglas Lee jumped ahead on the main event start, but by the second tum Pollard had pulled into the lead. jones was second, Urias third and Lee fourth. Payne had a poor start and worked his way from lOth on lap one to sixth position by lap three, finally finishing fourth at the flag. Pollard remained the leader over jones, who actually finished second but was penalized a lap for cutting second and Payne was awarded third. In the 600Cc Oval class Payne piloted his flat-tracker to the heat one win over Dan Dowding and Lee. jeff Brindle won the second heat over Stan Sweaney. In the final, Brindle claimed the lead, but was challenged by jones, Payne and Urias. The competition was tight the whole race between the top three riders, as each led the race at one polDt. Lorge dominates Mobile HM By Steve Gemignani IRVINGTON, AL, JULY 4 Two-wheeled fireworks were the order of the night at the Mobile International Speedway Half Mile, as 15-year-old Jason Lorge swept both Open class heats and the feature. Held as an added attraction to the usual stock car program, the event attracted over 20 riders from four states, with bikes ranging from street stock to dirt trackers and road racers. The evening began with qualifying to determine the makeup of the A and B classes. Even with the near loo-degree heat, several impressive times were clocked on the half-mile, high-banked, oval asphalt tra<:k, including Bobby Myers' 21.90 and jason Lorge's 22.12. In the first A class heat, it became apparent after only a few laps that jason Lorge was going to set the pace that everyone else could only try to follow. Lorge, riding the LA Racing/john Walker-owned HarleyDavidson XR750 usually ridden by Brian Villella in the Camel Pro Series, had a halflap lead by the time the checkered £lag dropped at the end of six laps. The first B class heat also doubled as a last chance qualifier for riders to move up to the faster (and more profitable) A class, with top two finishers Grant Lopez on a Honda CBR600 and Mike Speh on a Harley Sportster making the cut. The second series of heat races produced few surprises, with finishing orders virtually identical to the initial heat races. In the B main, Lawrence LeGault, riding a Yamaha XT5oo. narrowly edged Bobby Myers, who was aboard a Yamaha RZ350. .- c'HONDA Come ride with 'US.
