Caplinger aces Spare Parts HS By Arlene Hejlek JAMESTOWN, MO, JUNE 28 Chris Caplinger scored the overall victory at the eigl"\th round of the Missouri Hare Scrambles Series hosted by the Spare Parts M.C. Caplinger was last off the line at the start of the two-hour event on a dusty 7.9-mile tourse. Several riders were put out of the race on the first lap with crashes caused by the thick dust. Caplinger got around one of those mishaps in the first 0een fietd section but was involved in a three-bike pileup soon after he entered the woods. The leader Chad Busenbark ran uncontested out front, but Caplinger worked his way up to second position by the second lap and took over first when Busenbark dropped out with a flat front tire on the fourth lap. ATKIMr. Motorcycle/Donelson Cycles/ Sprocket Specialists/Kal-Gard/Met Lift/ Acerbis-sponsored Caplinger won the overall trophy at the completion of five laps. Second overall went to Intermediate class winner Matt Faletti. ":The rocks and tight woods are my kind of riding," said Faletti, who was able" to skirt all the problems and rode without tangling with anyone the whole race. That was not the case with Leigh Letellier, who survived to claim third overall and first-place Expert. Fourth overall was second-place Expert Kevin O'Brien, who almost caught Letellier on the last lap. Chris Graber had a bad start and rode with a flat front tire from the first lap on, but he still managed to finish fifth overall and second Intermediate. Results 30 0/A; J. Chris Caplinger (ATK); 2. Lane levels Montaque CC By Mark Childre MONTAGUE, TX,jUNE28 KTM of Fort Worth/KTM America/MS Racing/Trick Fuels/Duralube-backed Dean Lane tlirashed the competition in round 10 of the Texas Cross Country Series. The Montague track was laid out on virgin land in the rolling countryside of north central Texas. Although the-first lap of the morning Pro/Expert race was very sloppy, the sandy loam soil soaked up the excess moisture quickly, providing a continuously improving track. The start was staged with a tricky 180-degree first turn that generally left someone on the ground as each class diced through. Before. the pack was able to spread out, the track dropped down across Dry Valley Creek. Spectators lined the bridge and adjacent banks by the hundreds to watch the riders negotiate the crossing. Near the end of the loop, the course dropped into a sandwash that turned into quicksand, ending several riders' day. With the Pro class· slamming through the first tum, Clay Hoenshell blocked Lane's progress by stealing his line, forcing him over the berm, and securing the holeshot. Relegated to fourth, Lane made quick work of Curtis Kirchmeier and Brian Storrie and reeled Hoenshell in by the checkpoint. Lane was slowed by three crashes early in the first lap but still managed to pass Hoenshell. "The first good long straightaway we come to, I got him, I pulled away from him for a while and crashed and he would catch up," Lane commented. With a rhythm going, Lane was unstoppable, pulling a big lead over Hoenshell In the end. Results PRO: I. Dean Lane (KTM); 2. Clay HoensbeU (Suz); 3. Jeremy Fipps (Hon); 4. Brian Storrie (Kaw); 5. Lord fastest at Glen Helen MX By Terry Judd SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 21 Cycle Engineering's Dylan Lord won the Pee Wee Stock class at Glen Helen on a new Pee Wee course that was well-received by racers and parents alike. In moLO one Lord got the holeshot and was never contested. In a great race for second, Cale Wallace and Kevin Roberts duked it out, _with Wallace. leading until he crashed in the very last turn and allowed Roberts to capture second. Moto two was a carbon copy for Lord as he breezed to the win, but second place went to Ryan Picard who had experienced mechanical troubles in moto one. Picard earned third overall honoi's behind Roberts, whose consistent 2·3 finishes netted him second overall. Ken Mcintyre and his monkey Les Ketchum left little doubt as to who was fastest in the Sidehack class as they cruised to easy wins in both motos. Bruce Anderson and Carl Fischer diced with Don Hart and Pat Holmes for second in moto one with the former team claiming the spot at the finish. In moto two, however, second and third spots were reversed. Results 10· PIW STK BEG: I. Chris Judd (Yam); 2. Tyson Talkington (Yam); 3. Bruce Wilky (Yam); 4. James Williams (Yam). P/W STK JR: I. CHICO, CA, JULY 3 Kawasaki-mounted Scott Davis· took control of both motos and rode away to convincing wins to score the overall victory in the 125cc Novice class at Chico's Cycleland Speedway. Davis blasted off the line in the first moto to assume a lead he would never relinquish. Mike Bennett maintained second through the first turn, followed by Dylan Blackwell and Darryl Wahl. Down the back straight, Wahl' and Blackwell blew· past Bennett. As the riders completed the first lap, Mark Cooper, who had gotten off the line near last, cut inside both Wahl and Blackwell in the hairpin before the doubles. With his shorter run to the jump, Cooper was able to pass both riders and steal second. Blackwell quickly disposed of Wahl and gave chase to Cooper until he slid his front wheel in a big berm and went down. The fall dropped Blackwell out of the top 10. Davis and Cooper circulated the track well clear of third-place Wahl. Blackwell reentered the race and by the last lap was closing on Wahl. As the riders came to the line, Davis took an uncontested win ahead of Cooper. Wahl was able to hold Blackwell off and scored a very close third. Davis again demonstrated his superior starting technique by holeshotting the second moto. This time out, it was Wahl and Rick Mariscal giv.ing chase. By the end of the first lap, Blackwell and Cooper had closed in behind Mariscal and blew past him over the doubles. Blackwell then closed on Wahl and used the same move to take over second. Cooper then overtook Wahl, and approaching the step-up to the tabletop, also made his move to c1aimthird. By this time, Davis and Blackwell were well clear, with Davis winning. Results P/W: I. Gresham grabs win at Hills Ferry Short Track By Mindyz Mac NEWMA.N, CA, JUNE 19 Mike Gresham took the win over an impressive field of riders in the Pro-Am main at Hills Ferry's short track. Gresham shot off the line and into the lead at the start of the race. As the pack entered turn one there was plenty of bumping and banging while the riders fought for position. Coming out of turn two it was Grehsma in the lead, Bobby McDowell in second and Rob Damron running third. McDowell pressured ~resham throughout the race, but Gresham was too fast to pass. At the checkered flag it was Gresham taking the win. In the Open A _main Andy Tresser, aboard his Wood-Rotax, took the win over Bobby McDowell. Mike Gresham, hot off his win in the Pro-Am main, was holding down third and trying to pass ·McDowell, who was on the gas and holding his line perfectly. While McDowell and Gresham were battling for second, Tresser opened up a slight lead. At the finish it was Tresser, McDowell and Gresham. In 80cc C class action, Craig Gonzales got the holeshot off the line in the main event. Gonzales held the lead for four laps, but slipped off the groove as he was trying to pull away, allowing Jeremy Ellis and Jim Jolson to make a pass.
