At the Trail-Way ST, Todd Temple (71A) led the way ·in the 600cc B class. ROSAMOND, CA, JUNE 19·21 Chuck Graves rode to another easy win in the Toyota/Dunlop/Del Amo Motors/Miller High-Life Formula One Championship race during the sixth round of Willow Springs Motorcycle Club events at Willow Springs International Raceway. Graves' only competition in the race came from the current points leader Robert Miller. Miller got an excellent start off the line, but Graves was right on his tail going through the first few turn . Riding down the back straights, Graves grabbed the lead by moving past Miller on the inside with his Suzuki/ Valvoline-sponsored GSXRIIOO. Graves immediately began to power his way into a growing lead. Running in third place from the early stages of the race was Paul Harrell, who seemed content LO keep a lock in that position throughout the race. The only major ballie in the event was for fourth place, which was initially held by Jim Van Vegten. He soon came under pressure from Michael MonLOya, Michael Graves and Chuck Sorenson. As the race neared the final laps, Michael Graves and Montoya were locked in a tight ballle for fourth, exchanging the position several times. Just after the race leaders began the final lap, a rider went down exiting turn nine, and left his motorcycle on the track. That brought out the red flags and a premature end to the race, leaving Chuck Graves with the win and Miller in second. Results There were 283 entries registered for the day's event, and 200 riders had to be turned away in order to allow enough track time for those who were lucky enough to get an entry spot. The track crew worked most of Saturday night scaling down some of the bi~ger jumps, including altering the huge triple Jump down to a double to make the track more suitable for the amateur competitors. The heat races, which included two 125cc C gates and three 250cc C gates, were run on perfect track conditions but as the mains got underway the rain began to fall, turning the track into a slippery mire. Jerry Joiner holeshot the Senior Over 30 main, sliding into the first tum ahead of Jordan and .Kevin Dunham. Dunham soon passed Jordan and Joiner, and then Jordan made a clean pass to take the lead on the first lap. The two riders emerged together from the tunnel and Dunham attempted to get around Jordan by sliding high in the next berm, but Jordan stayed low and was able to maintain the position. Jordan motored on for the win ahead of Dunham. By the time the 250cc B class was ready to compete, the track was so deteriorated that the officials opted to cut down the track and the number of laps required, but several competitors still elected not to -participate. Those who did were rewarded with extremely challenging conditions and it was the mudsoaked Suzuki of Joe Moore that crossed the finish line first. Results 48 51 AUTO STK: l. Dalla. William. (Yam); 2. Majeski brothers hot at Trail-Way Short Track By Len Breech Photos by Ben Breech HANOVER, PA, JUNE 20 Tom and Rob Majeski, led by Tom's wins in the 600cc A, Senior A and 750cc categorie~, topped four classes between them to dominate a cold and damp evening of racing at TrailWay Speedway. Rob easily earned the win in the 600cc Pro final. One of the best races was Tom Majeski's win in the 600cc A final. Although he jumped out to an early lead and held it easily, the battle for second was fierce with Ricky Winsett on a 500cc two-stroke keeping Gary Foard, Mark Burkholder and Phil Libhart at bay for over six laps. As they entered the first turn on the seventh lap, Foard tapped Winsett slightly, and both Foard and Libhart got by. As they came off the second turn on the final lap, Libhart slipped under Foard for second behind Majeski. Although small in size, the 250cc A class also had an excitig final. Paul Lynch pulled away from the field, while Ace Phillips and Todd and Ricky Winsett fought over second for the entire distance. Todd Winsett finally took control of the position at the halfway flags, while Phillips gOt by Ricky Winsett with two laps remaining. Tom Majeski's win in the 750cc class was made somewhat easy when four of his competiLOrs went down in the first turn. Paul Crumling, who had battled Majeski for over half of the heat race, was unable to continue. , Majeski had no problem with a detuned Clarence Bull and Jody Yearick and cruised ahead for the win. Larsen, Lucero land victories at Speedway USA By M. Sober VICTORVILLE, CA, JUNE 20 Visiting British League regular Josh Larsen won the Scratch main before a crowd of 3190 at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds while veteran Steve Lucero won the Handicap. Larsep, starting in the third slotLO the right of the pole was the first to react as the tapes went up in the Scratch main. In positon two was Lucero, who was quick to the first turn as well and immediately went to work on the low line. Gary Ackroyd was making a rare appearance in a Scratch main, starting from the inside spot while Chris Manchester started from the outside. Manchester put his rear tire in the thick dirt on the outside, but it didn't live up to his expectations and he spent the race playing catch-up. Ackroyd reacted slowly off the line, but stayed down low and managed to finish third ahead of Manchester. Lucero made every attempt to reel in Larsen, but to no avail as the youngster was on the fast line all the way to the checkered flag. Since the season began the Handicap main has been six laps in duration, but due to fan requests promoters Gene and Roxanne Woods extended it to eight laps. Jesse Ochoa starting from the 30-yard line, took the front spot away from 20-yarder Greg Appleman on lap three, only to have Lucero take the lead away on lap seven just before the white flag ~me out. Lucero, who started on the 50-yard line, took the low line through the pack with Andy Northrup. right on his tail, while Brant attacked the outside line. When Lucero took over the lead position, Northrup moved up LO second. Ochoa recovered his composure and got back in line to take third. Brant had to abandon the outside dirt and pulled down low LO finish fourth. Results SCRATCH: I. Josh Larsen (Wes); 2. SIeve Lucero (Gdn): 5. Gary Ackroyd (Wes); 4. Chris Manchester (jaw). HDCP: I.
