track and a quarter-mile short 'track oval on part of the apple farm. Malley says Weinert might be talked into challenging some of the youn.)? local Expert class riders. In light of the fact that Weinert also competed in professional dirt track events at the start of his illustrious career, perhaps we'll see him race on both of the new tracks. Smi th crashed while leading the AMA/ CCS 600cc Supersport race at New Hampshire International Speedway on June 21. ''I'm doing alright," Smith said. "I was real lucky I didn't do this at Texas. I'm going to be out three and a half'to four weeks, so I'll be back for Mid-Ohio (August 1-2)." In fact, Choate, who was ranked 12th in the AMA/CCS 600cc Supersport championship point standings going into the June 28 Road America round, won both motos of the Plus-25 Intermediate Class at the recent Masters of Motocross at Muddy Creek Raceway in Tennessee. "Financially I was beyond the end of my rope," Choate explained as to why he hasn't been at the road races. "Hopefully, I can make the final two rounds. It was just difficult because the AMA had three in a row - in Minnesota, New Hampshire and then back to Wisconsin. It's not by choice that I wasn't there. Racing motorcycles is my whole life and it's very disappointing to me that I couldn't go to the Nationals." According to the AMA, the July 25- 26 Vintage Motorcycle Days promises to be one of the biggest motorcycle events of the year. It will take place at the AMA's headquarters in Westerville, Ohio. A celebration of motorcycling's 107-year heritage, Vintage Motorcycle Days will feature displays, exhibits and running demonstrations of some of the most treasured motorcycles ever manufactured. Motorcycle memorabilia will also be on display and for sale at the .two-day event, which will feature a vintage motorcycle parade through historic Westerville and a ride into the countryside. The AMA/CCS road race meet scheduled for August 8-9 at Putnam Park Road Course in Indianapolis, Indiana, has been canceled. That makes the WERA meet on July 4-5 the last motorcycle event of the season at Putnam Park, according to track spokesman Richard Diasio. Reports from Europe say defending 250cc National MX Champion JeanMichel Bayle, who is currently practicing in France for the July 19 World Championship 250cc Road Race GP in Magny-Cours, France, will not compete at the July 5 Red Bud National Championship 250cc MX in Buchanan, Michigan. For more information, call Don Nicolini at 813/968-7888 On election day, November 3, motorcyclists can send a simple but irpportant message to their elected officials: Motorcycle riders are voters, too. That Speaking of Jean-Michel Bayle, his practice lap times on his 250cc G P road race bike are respectable, according to our source in France. Compared to lap times logged in French National road race meets, Bayle's among the top riders, but compared to GP times, he's not yet among the top 10. However, it's reponed that Bayle's lap times are constantly improving. Honda's J eft Stanton and Kawasaki' s Jeff Ward were on hand for weekday practice before the Mammoth Mountain MX, but neither rider competed in the races. "Mammoth is one of my favorite tracks," said Ward, who, like Stanton, spent the majority of his time aboard an Open class motocrosser preparing for the upcoming 500cc Nationals. Even though Jeff Stanton didn't compete at Mammoth, one of his old motorcycles did. Team Peak/Pro Circuit's Jeremy McGrath piloted Stanton's 1991 factory Honda CR500 to a runner-up finish in the Open Expert class behind Suzuki's Steve Lamson. Ironically, it was the same motorcycle that Lamson rode to last year's Open Expert class win, before Stanton raced it in the Nationals. "I couldn't get beaten by myoid bike," joked Lamson. Since Suzuki doesn't make an Open class machine, Lamson rode a Klemm Research 340cc-kitted RM250. Multi-time Supercross, 250 and 500cc National MX Champion David Bailey tells us his Lake Suger Tree MX Park track in Axton, Virginia, is for sale. "It's just a matter of a change of interests. I live too far away (southern California) and I don't have the time that is required to do a good job, but I'd still like to see the facility do well." Bailey's father Gary had assisted in operating the track, but is· busy running his motocross school. Bailey, who suffered a career-ending injury in 1987, has been devoting his time to wheelchair racing, painting helmets, doing design work for JT Racing and raising his two children. The last event run at the track was the 1991 National I25/250cc MX, and Bailey says that the facility is ready to host either professional or amateur MX events. The property is estimated to be worth $500,000, but Bailey will consider the best offer. For more information, call 619/945-7067.
