Chester wins at Silver Creek MX Berghuis by a hair at Bridgeton TT By Barbara and Loren Williams By Grace DiBenedetto JUNE 14, MORGANTOWN, NC Rain had deluged the area all week and Sunday morning clouds threatened more of the same, but while many riders opted to stay home, Barr's Competition-backed Jim Chester took advantage of double points to score the wins in the 125 and 250cc A classes at the Silver Creek Motocross, explaining, "I hate mud, but for double points I could be persuaded to get dirtyl" Chester displayed his in ten t to make the best of the mud from the very first, as he squirted in front of the l25cc A field and slid around the first turn of motQ,one in first. Chad Lough and Steve Childress pressed for the en tire seven laps, but Chester denied any chance for a pass and came across the finish line in front. Childress surprised the field on the secondmoto start by getting excellent traction' and shooting into first. Chester held down runnerup, while Lough looked for a way around until bumping his injured knee. "I leaned over a little too far and really whacked it," explained Lough. "After that I had to slow down a little until it quit hurting so much, and then it was too late to make any kind of a move on Jim (Chester)." Moto one of the 250cc A class was the first of four Pro-Am motos run on the sloppy track, Lough headed the pack through turn one, and was the only rider'thankful for the one-line nature of the circuit. "There were only a couple of places to pass at first," he explained. "Early in the day, the track was really tricky, and 1 almost went down a couple of times. If 1 had, there wouldn't have been much chance of making up positions." Lough led the line of riders to the finish. As the track dried somewhat for moto two, Chester was studying the changing lines. When the gate dropped his observations paid off as he shot into the lead. Lough kept up a close second until shock problems forced him to slow, Recovering from an awful start, Childress grabbed a handful and first passed Wood, and then Lough on his way to do battle with Chester. Childress closed on the leader at the halfway point and pestered Chester for the remainder of the race, but Chester prevailed. BRIDGETON, MI, JUNE 14 Willie Berghuis pulled a rabbit out of his hat to grab the win in an incredibly close 500cc B race at the Muskegan MC's TT, Chad Davis took the early lead over the jump but by the time they reached the end of lap one, Berghuis had caught up with him after weaving his way through heat winners Tom Antor, Russell McCloskey and Karl Hesse. Berghuis took the inside line and grabbed the lead from Davis by lap two while McCloskey followed close behind with Mike Robinson hot on his rear fender. The four were nose-to-tail and by the halfway point had opened a comfortable margin on the rest of the field. While McCIQskey challenged Berghuis, Robinson challenged McCloskey, and as they headed for the flag on the final lap, around turn four. McCloskey opened the throttle on his TT 500cc Yamaha and put a wheel in front of the Kawasaki rider only 10 feet before the line. Berghuis had the momentum, though, and was able to gain the advantage back as the checkered flag fell. Brian Miller owned the track and took home the win money in the Pro and Combo classes, getting the jump off the line in both. Paul Kops, Jack Mayer and Doug O'Boyle took turns at p-ying to chase the Honda rider down, but succeeded only in racing each other, never getting close enough to seriously challenge the leader. Kops picked up second-place money in the Combo category, while Jack Mayer took the same position in the Pro event and O'Boyle settled for third place in both races. The large crowd of spectators booed loudly as the referee put 80-year-old Jerry Meinel back on the penalty line in the Senior Over-40 class. The veteran got a little over-anxious off the . line, releasing the clutch slightly before the green light appeared in heat two. Meinel did make it into the final but Triumph rider Merlyn Weru came out on top. Weru eased the heavy Twin around the famed TT track and won by a large margin. Results 34 50: I. Schaidt was okay but returned to the pits instead of the start line. With three laps completed and five to go, .the restart was staggered. O'Boyle, Froelich and Watson blew out of the hole on the green light but the effort was wasted as Watson went down when he took his Honda too far inside and got sucked into the soft stuff. Watson was unshaken and got back on line for the third restart. This time Froelich exploded out of the hole reaching the transfer first. As the field came out of the horseshoe, it was Froelich on top with O'Boyle and Warren side-by-side out of the switchback in second. The two came out of turn four and down the front stretch into the halbvay mark peg-to-peg. The opening O'Boyle was looking for came in the switchback going into the white-flag lap and he took it, blowing by Froelich and into the lead, With less then a lap to go the two Rotax riders set out to retaliate. As the three came out of the switchback for the last time, Froelich made one last effort and switched to the inside line. The move brought him alongside the Honda rider and the two came barreling around turn four in a wheel-to-wheel stretch-run for the flag. When the flag dropped a second later O'Boyle won by a wheel. It was a hot night for racing and Glen O'Boyle sent the mercury soaring as he lit up the track in the Senior class at Thunderbird Raceway. O'Boyle began his domination in heat two when he blasted off the line with Phil Mann in tow. O'Boyie led until lap (our, when the hairpin transfer put him down temporarily. He was back on track in an instant but not before Mann safely went around him into the lead. . Mark Froelich and Jack Warren diced it up in heat one after Froelich got the jump off the line. Warren caught up with him on the transfer, then followed for a lap before sneaking into the lead the next time through the TT transfer. ' Froelich exploded off the line in the final with O'Boyle, Mann and Warren taking up the chase. O'Boyie got under Froelich on the second time through the switchback to take over the lead, while Warren overtook Mann for third. Lap three saw Warren on the move again as. he pulled up beside Froelich over the jump, Warren got through the short-track switchback ahead of Froelich, but just as he 50: I. Brent Nelson (Puc); 2. By Dave Burgess CARLSBAD, CA, MAY W Honda-mounted Tony Caliger put it all together with two perfect motos to take top honors in the 500cc Junior class at the Racing Enterprises-promoted Saturday motocross held at Carlsbad Raceway. Riders were greeted with a track that was being prepared for the upcoming Commotion By The Ocean race, and it was exceptionally well-groomed. Caliger drew blood early as he rocketed his CR 500 to the early lead, with Dan Campbell and Mike Grum close behind. Caliger was riding smoothly and began to pull away early on. Recovering from a poor stan was Kawasaki-mounted John Tookey. Tookey, who is recovering from a severe knee injury, was riding strong as he caught the back of the pack and began passing riders. Caliger again had the hot clutch hand in the second moto, storming around the first turn with nothing but open track in front of him. Davis was running second, with Campbell and Grum in tow. Cruising around in last was Tookey, whose pit crew lit a fire under him with some encouragement. Tookey rolled on the throttle and zapped Grum, Campbell, and Davis for second, Unfortunately for Tookey, Caliger was nowhere in sight, styling to the overall win with perfect moto finishes.
