~ .- LOCAL EVENTS ~ Approximately 300 riders battled at the Hangtown Amateur MX on Saturday. Larry Wosick (I) won both the Vet A and Pro Vet classes at Hangtown. starts but slipped off the pace to take a pair of thirds. Randy Pockrandt was fourth with a six-four tally and Jeff Watts was fifth with five-six combinations. though he was challenging Wosick for the lead when he bailed in the second moto. "Just pushing too hard," he would later expl.ain. Tim Alarcon took his KX to the B division victory with moto wins over Eric Harvey. Third went to Tom McKinney, whose four-three finishes couldn't beat Harvey's pair of seconds. The large C class saw Don Mendenhall take his Suzuki to the win over Dick Smith, who won the first mota, but could only manage a sixth in moto two. Mendenhall's two-one moto finishes were enough for the victory. Rich Horne won both ends of the Open B category over New Age Cycle's Eric Von Ruff while Jeff Johnson easily topped the C class over Bill Taylor and Steve Stories. Casey Johnson topped the 125 Brace with a one-two split and a great battle with Stan'Finney, who claimed second with a three-one tally. Eric Phipps won the first division of the 125 C show, with a one-two slam over Jeremy Zipton, while Jason Garcia was third over Jason Joiner and Brant Stieger. Jimmy Pierce smoked the first moto of the second 125 C division over his buddy Paul Smoak, then went on to win the second moto by a fair margin over David Gomez. The Any KawasakilNoleen-assisted Pierce took home . the five-foot uophy and several contingencies, while Smoak claimed second overall. . Danny Nelson aced both 250cc A motos but had to contend with 30-yearold Wosick, who finished second in each !'tl0to. Eric DuCray took third. "These kids can really go," stated Wosick, who finished third in the 250cc National the last time he competed on the outdoor National circuit. Results . MINI A:. 1. Casey Johnson (Kaw); 2. Amateur Day at the 24th Annual Hangtown Classic only drew a modest 300 entries, but that uanslated to a full 20 minutes of racing for each class on F o the tough uack, which went from slippery and muddy to slippery and dry as the sun beat down throughout the day. Wosick, riding a North County Yamaha-backed YZ, was preparing for the Mammoth Mountain MX, stating "I still like to ride. It keeps me sharp." Many of the riders expressed excitement to be competi'ng on the same course which their heroes would do battle on the following day. The Hangtown track was laid out in a shallow valley, and was composed primarily of natural terrain, along with a helping of man-made obstaCles. Speeds on the uack were fairly high. Mike Preston finished Saturday with a pair of seconds behind Wosick while Kenny Mckenzie, a former cross countty champion, seemed very fast on the 3. And! G.-.gg (Kawl. 125 c DIV 1: 1.
