once if not twice, and that would make you lose a lot of momentum into that sand, so I lost some time there. Then the time that Malcolm [Stewart] almost got around me, I forget where exactly, but just too many mistakes." It was another what-could- have-been night for Chase Sex- ton, who ultimately came home in third. The Honda HRC rider has proven time and time again that he has the speed to run up front and win but mistakes seem to plague his hopes every time. Sexton started in second and made a key pass early on Justin Barcia for the lead. This put the number-23 machine up front again, the same top spot he'd been in during the morn- ing qualifying session and the podium territory. A battle with the healed-up Cooper Webb treated fans to a few good laps of sus- pense before Tomac eventually overtook the position and rode it out to the finish. It was far from a perfect race for Tomac, who kept it interest- ing with several near-crashes, including a wild ride in his heat race that saw him pull off a mi- raculous save. "I went under the tunnel, and I was just a little outside and going just a little too fast," Tomac said. "And then the way that berm had the little tail on it at the end my rear end hit it and got pretty wild there. It should've been a high-side that I somehow saved. And then in the main event there, I was missing the middle rhythm lane. It was ROUND 14 / APRIL 16, 2022 ATLANTA MOTOR SPEEDWAY / ATLANTA, GEORGIA P56 SUPERCROSS I MONSTER ENERGY AMA SUPERCROSS SERIES MYOWNRACE okay start but going into the end of the tunnel I caught that bank/edge with my rear wheel, and it kicked me and I did a 180 [degree turn]. My right-hand glove came off in the crash and my bike was twisted a bit but it took me a couple turns to get used to it and I came back to 10th. I'm a li le bit disappointed, obviously, but that's all I could get today." 19 JUSTIN BOGLE 21ST 450SX Jus n Bogle had his Twisted Tea/H.E.P. Su- zuki near the front of his heat race (which he holeshot) and main event, but trouble ended up catching with him in the final. "Today was just kind of an average day," Bogle said. "I got a good start in the heat. I didn't ride as well as I can but ended up with a fourth in the heat. I got a decent start in the main, then had an issue in the first rhythm sec on and bent my shi er under the footpeg. I had to pull in to get it bent back which put me a lap down. I ended up going down again at the end. It was just a rough weekend." In year's past, Tomac almost always started in the back and made his way through the field. In 2022 however, his starts are light years better than before, and it's unusual to not see the number-three leading the way in the early stages of the race. In typical Tomac fashion though, he charged hard to catch up into Chase Sexton was in position to win the main event, but he was one of the many victims of the slick Atlanta track. After sliding out while leading, he came back to finish third.
