O
f all the young racers currently in the AMA paddock, Cameron Beaubier's name is the one you hear
most associated with the possibility of an American actually
making it to the top-tier of World
Championship racing. Fittingly,
Beaubier had one of his best
races of the season in front of the
MotoGP contingent, the Y.E.S.
Monster Graves Yamaha rider
easily besting his teammate Garrett Gerloff by almost three seconds in the shortened, red-flag
interrupted 14-lap final at Mazda
Raceway Laguna Seca.
Had the race gone the distance without the red flag, Beaubier's margin of victory would
have been much larger. He was
some three seconds ahead
of RoadRacing Factory's Jake
Gagne when the red flag came
out on the ninth lap, the result of
Ted Rich crashing on the exit of
turn 11 with his bike finding its way
to the middle of the front straight.
With the MotoGP schedule of the
utmost of importance this weekend, the race was shortened and
would resume after the cleanup
with a five-lap sprint to the finish.
"I kinda slacked on the first
start and I went back to fifth,"
Beaubier said. "I was on the outside of DiSalvo and he ran a little
wide. I finally made my way up to
the front and put my head down
and pulled a little bit of a gap.
Then I saw the red flag and I was
like, 'Oh, man.' "
That was the challenge for
Beaubier and he accepted it, riding away once again to lead by
over three seconds on the fourth
lap before backing it down to win
by 2.9 seconds after just five laps.
Latus Motors Triumph's Jason
DiSalvo had nailed the holeshot
in the first part of the race, but
