VOL. 50 ISSUE 29 JULY 23, 2013
shimura Suzuki's Martin Cardenas took up the fight with Herrin
for second place, but he also
came up short.
"It was a very tough race and
I gave everything I had," Cardenas said. "I got a little help to get
on the podium because Roger
[Hayden] had a mechanical. He
was faster than me today. But I
gave everything I had. I had not
the grip I wanted on the rear and I
was sliding all the race. I was hoping to get on the second position
at the end, but I didn't quite have
a good last lap and I wasn't very
close to [Josh] Herrin to make an
attack or something. I had to settle for third place – podium. It's a
good position, but it's not a result
that we are chasing - me and the
team. It's a good result and I'm
happy and we will keep trying at
Miller and the next few races and
hopefully it will come."
So second place went to Herrin, his seventh podium finish of
the season as he continues to
be the only rider staying close to
Hayes in the title chase.
"My plan from the beginning
was to stick behind Josh [Hayes]
from lap one, but it didn't work
out," Herrin said. "On the warmup lap he always goes from the
line like it's the start of a race and
gets the pace going and used to
it – just like a warm-up on a bicycle. You're ready for it and then
the start comes. I just wasn't
ready when the flag dropped.
I got a good start, but he was
gone in the first couple of laps.
The battle with Rog and Martin
was good… I don't know what
happened to Roger and it was a
bummer that he wasn't there."
There were more heated battles behind the one for second as
Michael Jordan Motorsports Suzuki's Danny Eslick had his hands
full for a bit of the race with the
factory KTMs of Chris Fillmore
and Taylor Knapp. Knapp would
crash out of the race on the 16th
lap and Fillmore was forced to
give up the chase in the final laps
after nearly crashing. Still, it was
a good effort for the orange team
with Fillmore finishing sixth.
Then came another battle, this
one featuring the factory EBRs of
Geoff May and Aaron Yates, with
May beating the veteran to the
line by less than half a second for
sixth place.
With Yates seventh, Foremost
Insurance Pegram Racing's Larry
Pegram rode to a painful eighth,
the Ohioan struggling with illness
and horrible arm pump as his
season continues its downward
spiral.
Cory West rode his EBR to

ninth with David Anthony riding
the Aussie Dave Racing Suzuki
to 10th.
Hayden was the only non-finisher of note.
With nine races in the books,
Hayes holds an 11-point lead over
Herrin as his two non-finishes at
Daytona are now just a distant
memory. Cardenas is third with
207 points with Eslick moving
ahead of his teammate Hayden
for fourth, 148-134.
