LOOKING BACK
We featured motocross racing on the cover 40 years ago. Phil Larson
was pictured leading the pack at the CMC Golden State Series at Sand
Hill Ranch in Northern California. Also on the cover, Bill Herndon was
shown on his Honda MB5 that he road from Mexico to Canada and back.
Herndon wrote about the experience that covered 3391.4 miles on the
50cc motorcycle. He averaged 92.634 miles per gallon (36.83 gallons
total)... Cycle News Senior Editor Dale Brown interviewed 500cc Road
Race World Champion Marco Lucchinelli.
Honda unveiled what Cycle News said was Honda's first serious entry
into the burgeoning dirt bike market—the four-stroke XL250. Honda also
revealed its new CB350 Four street bike. Both bikes, including a Honda-
made motorized lawn chair, were pictured on the cover 50 years ago...
We had a feature on flashy flat-tracker Jimmy Maness... We reported
that Californians were going to have to register their dirt bikes in the
coming months.
James Stewart made
his professional
Supercross debut in
the 125cc class at
Anaheim. Stewart
finished second to
Travis Preston 20
years ago.
