French rival
two Isle of Man TTs, I had to uphold the family name by taking
down the French mechanic dude
in Superpole. Mission complete.
Oh, yeah… I didn't tell you
about Superpole. Unlike some of
those other camps I've been to
where competing is a bad thing
and we're all treated the same
and all come home with some
stupid trophies that don't mean
anything because we got our
butts kicked, this camp lets you
race. Go figure. A motorcycle
camp with a bunch of guys and
girls trying to get better and go
faster and they actually let you
go against the stopwatch to see
if you are getting better. Groundbreaking stuff, huh. Funny that
nobody thought of it before Ed-
wards and Co.
So every afternoon we get to
go out and ride the big track (it's
got like 16 corners), which combines all three tracks into a big
lap. Edwards runs the stopwatch
and off you go, one at a time –
mano y cronógrafo. You get one
lap so it's big pressure stuff. I still
get the chills thinking about it because it's more fun than anything
I've ever done that wasn't illegal
(mom, I'm not talking about anything really bad here). You also
get to watch the instructors go
at it every day and it turns into a
real brawl with the likes of Shea
Fouchek, Prussiano and Scherb
trying to beat each other and the
King of the Camp himself, Edwards. And at the end of it all,
they sit around and drink beer
(not me, mom) and bench race
about it. Fun stuff.
They also do these cool team
endurance races where they
pair you up with other campers
to do battle as a team. Bummed
to say that I cost our team victory when I stalled the bike leaving the pits and couldn't get it
started fast enough. Even more
bummed to find out later that
the bike I was riding was electric
start. I wondered what that key
was for. Maybe we should have
shot higher than San Diego State
when applying for colleges.
I know that since we're Australians you guys didn't raise me
around guns so I'm not much
of a gun guy, but I'll have to ad-
