P34 IN THE WIND WARNER KILLED IN MAINE B ill Warner was killed after crashing his turbocharged Hayabusa during a speed run at "The Maine Event" at Loring Air Force Base in Maine on Sunday, July 14. He was 44 years old. Warner was clocked at 285 mph before he lost control on the paved runway and although he was reportedly conscious and talking after the crash, he died an hour or so later at a hos- pital in Caribou. Warner had reached speeds of 311 mph on the same runway in 2011, a mark most consider to be the world speed record for a conventional motorcycle. He was attempting to go 300 mph when he suffered his crash, according to reports from his crew. onster Energy/Parts Canada/Leading Edge Kawasaki's Bret Metcalfe picked up where he left off at the latest installment of the Monster Energy Motocross Nationals in Canada and that's winning, which is something he's been doing pretty much ever since the 2013 CMRA Canadian National MX Series began five rounds ago. After a short break in the series that saw Metcalfe head south to compete in the AMA Southwick National in Massachusetts, Metcalfe and crew headed to Gopher Dunes in Courtland, Ontario, July 14, for the start of the eastern swing of the series. Gopher Hills is considered one of the toughest tracks in all of Canada, much of which has to do with its deep sand and whoops, and when you factor in the 90-degree temperatures on this Sunday, you had one very brutal day of racing. But that didn't seem to matter to Metcalfe, as he won for the fourth consecutive time after topping both MX1 (450) motos. Machine Racing Yamaha's Kyle Keast, who made his series debut, finished second overall with a 5-2. With four rounds left, Metcalfe enjoys a comfortable lead in the MX1 Championship, but the race for second couldn't be any tighter. Red Bull/Fox/ Royal Distributing KTM's Tyler Medaglia and Rockstar Energy/OTSFF/Yamaha Motovan.com's Robert Kiniry are deadlocked with 181 points each, 60 PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHAN MOORE METCALFE ROLLS ON M Brett Metcalfe has a firm grip on the Canadian MX Championship after winning for the fourth straight time. points behind Metcalfe. Medaglia, however, has momentum on his side after capturing the holeshot in both motos at Gopher Hills and going 2-5 for third overall, edging out Kiniry's 7-3 (Kiniry fell in the first moto.) Kawasaki rider Teddy Maier, who went 3-DNF, holds down fourth in the championship with 159 points. Despite suffering a mechanical issue that kept him out of the top 10 overall at Gopher Dunes, Monster Energy/Parts Canada/Leading Edge Kawasaki's Austin Politelli, still has control of the MX2 Championship. He has a 33-point lead over Kaven Benoit (KTM).
