Motocross started in earnest 30 years ago with the opening rounds of the
Florida Winter AMA MX Series, GFI California Winter MX Series (North
and South), and Golden State MX Series in California. We pictured a
photo from Gatorback of Jim Neese (3) leading the way... We tested the
latest Suzuki RMX250 off-roader... Alan Cathcart got the chance to throw
a leg over the Aprilia AFI 250cc Grand Prix road racer... We reported
that KTM, which had recently filed
for bankruptcy protection, was
purchased by a group of investors,
forming KTM Sportmotorcycle
GmbH International.

Our Supercross preview highlighted our first issue of 2002. We pictured
defending 250cc SX Champion Ricky Carmichael and 125cc East
hopeful Chad Reed on the cover. Reed, however, was going to run the
first six rounds in the 250cc class before switching gears for the 125cc
East Championship. We interviewed Reed in the issue... Alan Cathcart
told our readers what it was like to ride Valentino Rossi's Honda
NSR500... We highlighted some of the bikes revealed at the Bologna
