Buddy Robinson of Salinas scored an upset
victory over ·a bevy of southern California
stars to capture the crown in front of 3,500
spectators at Maurice Kriesberg's inaugural
"King of the Concrete" race at
the Long Beach Arena tonight.

race one by a haH lap over Dennis
Briggs (Busby Racing Godd). Mike
Curoso (Rivera Engineering/DeBono
Wes) began his march to the final
when he held off a persistent John
Cook (UP Sports/Hi-Point Jaw) the
entire distance in race two.
John Sandona (Esprit/Chase-Harper Jaw), who had never raced on
concrete before (a fact he proved to
everyone in his first session of practice), got the gate from the pole in
race three. Sandona held the lead
until the second circuit when former
National Champion, Mike Bast (Justice Brothers/Pre-Fab Jaw) shot by
for the lead and eventual victory over
Sandona.. Robinson (Budweiser Jaw)
got his first shot in race four and
made the best of the opportunity as
he beat Greg Ayers (Clover Custom
Cycle Wes) and Rob Pfetzing (Valvoline/Super Links Wes), who £lew
through ~he straw bales and knocked
.down the slarting gate at the checkered £lag.
Curoso won race five over Pfetzing,
who had to start with his peg on the
ground due to clutch damage suffered in the now legendary startinggate crash, Robinson again made it
look easy as he chalked up his second
win in race six after Alan Christian
(STP/Seer God~) thrilled the crowd
with a spectacular trip through the
bales causing a red £lag. Bast had a
much easier time in race seven as he
led all the way to remain tied for first
