Mayberry new CO state indoor speedway champ By .Ernie Ferguson DENVER, CO, DEC. 3 On this Friday night the indoor dirt track at the National Western Complex Arena smoked for over two hours as 25 speedway riders raced for me Colorado State Championship. The evening provided some of the most spectacular racing any speedway fan could ask to see. With only 20 scratch races scheduled, the action was fast and fur• ious. The first place rider in each heat was awarded three points, the second place finisher awarded two poin~s, the third place finisher was given one point and fourm place zero points. Heat number one of me night was taken by Dan Weigum when he nipped Brian Hoel to take the flag. Mark Corbett and Mike Jaudon did not finish. The second heat was taken by the gutsy riding of Don Mayberry. He stayed out in front of Rick Steele, Johnnie Zweygardt and Denis Troudt. The next race pitted Ken Pieper, Fred Martin, Larry Metherd and Bill Walsh. Pieper was to be d.enied when he had trouble in a turn, and Bill Walsh raced by him to take the heat. Mark Borgman was the winner of me fourth heat over Jimmy Troudt, Dave Peiper and Randy Lamirande. Mark dove into me corner to lead and stayed there for me four laps. The next heat saw D. Troudt in some great racing over Corbett, Martin and La"mirande, respectively. In the sixth heat, J. Troudt, in his blue leathers, turned it on to win going away over Hoel, Metherd and Zweygardt. In me seventh race of the evening, Borgman gained his second first place finish of the night when he beat Steele, Weigum and Walsh, who did not finish. Mayberry won the next heat when K. Pieper hit the wall after touching his brother Dave in the third turn. N1ike Jaudon took second. This was Don's second win of the night. In the ninth heat, D. Peiper came right back to take the flag over Corbett, Walsh and Zweygardt. The next race was taken by K. Pei per as he brushed himself off and, like brother Dave, returned to win over Hoel, D. Troudt and Borgman, who was forced to start backwards at the start line after running the gate in the first aborted start of the heat. In- heat number II, an adrenniline pumped Don Mayberry won his mird race of the night, taking the flag ahead of Weigum, J. Troudt and Martin. The next heat saw Jaudon win his first race of me evening over Steele, Lamirande and Metherd. Kenny Peiper won his second race in a row in heat number 13 over Troudt, Corbett and Steele. Hoel got his first win in the next race when he led all racers to the flag. Mayberry took second, Walsh third and Lamirande fourm. Peiper took the next heat over Weigum, D. Troudt and Metherd. Heat number 16 was won by Borgman; he raced in'front of Martin, Jaudon and Zweygardt. Mayberry again won in the next heat for his fourth first place finish of the night. Don won over Borgman, Corbett and Metherd. In me 18m race, D. Peiper passed Martin to win. Steele was disqualified and Hoel did not finish. After a re-start in heat number 19, K. Peiper finally took the win over Weigum. Zweygardt and Lamirande did not finish. The last race of the night was captured by Walsh, he beat D. Troudt, Jaudon and J. Troudt. The high point man and winner of the evening was Don Mayberry. Don won four heats and placed second in the fifth. He was followed by Ken Peiper, who had three first place finishes and one second. Third place was awarded to Mark Borgman with II total points. • Results FINAL POINTS: 1. Don Mayberry (14); 2. Ken Peiper (11); 3. Mark Borgman (11); 4. Dave Peiper (10); 5. Dan Weigum (10); 6.
