Bill Mattox (Montclair Yam) held fourth overall, and at the checkered (Jag they were led by Sixbery (Kaw). with Davis second, Prater (Kaw) third and Mattox in fourth. Dan Ashcraft (Hus. Motorcycle Co.) made 0(( with the holeshot 0(( of the Open Expert line, but, before the end • of the first lap, Bruce Ogilvie and Brian Manley shot past him. As the leader ended the second lap, Manley slipped through to take the overall spot, but Ogilvie still stuck to his fenders with ea'ch and every lap. Third and fourth seemed to be having a race of their own as Ashcraft and Randy Norman fought for their own place. As the checkered (Jag waved the end, Manley crossed with Ogilvie still hot on his heels. Norman aced out Ashcraft for third and fourth. First Amateur was Bill Boyer. The biggest race of the day was won by Jim Berry. The fi.-st lap of the Seniors and Vets race was led by William Saltzman (Open Vet) who, by the second lap, gave way to Jim Berry (Open Vet). Bill Manley (Sr 250cc) maneuvered his bike into third overall and first Senior with Lars Larsson (Open Sr) in fourth. At the finish, the positions remained the same as Jim Berry (Orange County Cycle) claimed the overall, and Saltzman took second. Manley and Larsson still held third and fourth. As the 250cc Expert line made the first turn, John VanDerLinden, Randy Hayes and Andre' Butcher were dicing for the holeshot. Kit Palmer made with the holeshot 0(( the Amateur line, while Novice Dean: Hall and Beginner Dennis Turner got holeshots 0(( of their lines of start. As the leaders rounded lap one, Brian Manley had moved into the overall position. With one win already, Manley, of Malcolm Smith Products, was looking for another. Randy Hayes (Yam) moved his machine into second and Randy Norman moved into third. As the checkered flag waved the end of another race day, it also waved the end of another great year of SRA racing. Manley claimed his second win for the day, and Hayes and Norman took second and third. Results 14 MINI EX: 1. Scott Brown; 2. Keith Senn; 3. G'ene Baldwin. MINI AM: 1. Todd Hayes; 2. Gary Lacy. Clowers, Kotajarvi split NMA Jr. Cycle wins By Tom Corley ORANGE, CA: NOV. 21 The final event of the National Min"icyc1e Association Fall Nationals was held on Saddleback's International track. The four race series kicked off at Indian Dunes andcontinued at Barona Oaks, Blythe Raceway and then to Saddleback. With this series the riders rolled out their 1983 machinery. Today Steven Kotajarvi and Buddy Antunez teamed up and rode the first year model of the Kawasaki KX 60 to impressive finishes in the Junior Cycle Stock and Modified races. These two riders posed a threat to Yamaha's Tommy "Too Small" Clowers. Kotajarvi started 0(( his day by taking the lead in the Junior Cycle Stock opening moto. Nobody came close enough to pass Steven; this included Clowers who was running in second place. Antunez held 0(( "King" Richard Saxton and Jason Collier. Yamaha-mounted Clowers struck ~ack in the final round. Kotajarvl had the lead and was lined up to take the overall when, on the third lap, Clowers made his move. He caught Kotajarvi on a downhill and made the pass for the final moto win and overall victory. Kotajarvi's 1-2 earned him the second place trophy over Antunez's consistent 3-3. Once again Kotajarvi and Clowers shot it out in the Junior Cycle Modified event. Clowers might have won the opening moto had he not dropped his Yamaha while going downhill at the back of the track. Several riders throughout the day had trouble on that downhill including 125cc Expert . Taylor Marcell who 'flipped his Yamaha. Kotajarvi took thewin with Antunez in second, which made it a Kawasaki moto. Antunez was trying not to let Kotajarvi and Clowers have all the glory, and he showed them both at the start of the final moLO. He took the holeshot and developed a lead over Kotajarvi. It lasted till the second lap when Kotajar~i took a faster line on the corner below Webco tower. Kotajarvi had the le.ad and ~oon.Clowers worked his way into second with Antunez in third. Overall it was Kotajarvi, Antunez, Clowers and Collier. Thayne lito has taken his share of wins in 80cc Intermediate racing between OCIR and Saddleback racing. Today was his first NMA win, and he topped the 80cc Stock Intermediate 12 and over class. Shaun Kalos took his Suzuki to the early lead in the first moto ahead of lito and Burgess. Soon Burgess passed lito and Burgess went into second. lito was pushed back to third, and soon Derek Nye worked his way by lito and stole third. lito was losing positions, but then it turned around, and he started to move back up. The leader, Kalos, fell around Webco and Nye fell on a straight. New Kawasaki rider Burgess got a good break and won the race with lito taking second and' moving up from fourth. Kalos fell in the first moto, but in the final round it was Burgess who took a hard spill. He fell ,on the second turn below Webco tower, and lito smacked into him but didn't fall down. Kalos was way out front and was uncontested. lito held second place till Steve Gamble slid by him around Webco. It was unfortunate for Shaun Kalos; the first moto DNF gave him eighth overall. Zito took the first place trophy without winning either moto, but had a fine 2-3 tally. Taking second was Steve Skibel (Suz). Steve Gamble took third over Arizona rider Brian Pr)1or and Lance Smith. Meeks, Dymond collect CMC cash By Tom Corley ORANGE, CA, NOV. 21 Three events brought so many competitors and spectators into Saddleback Park that the hillsides were over-populated. The regularly scheduled Continental Motosports Club motocross event was held on the back track, across the road from the Baja Cross event, while the National Minicycle Association hosted their final event of the Fall Nationals on the International motocross track. In CMC motocross competition, Tracy Me~ks edged out M otocross Action Magazine test rider Lance Moorewood for the 125cc Pro win, Micky Dymond won both motos for the 250cc Pro win and Robert "Robot" Rodgers shared moto wins with Jeff Conlin to take the 500cc Pro honors. Tracy Meeks rode next to perfectly in the 125cc Pro class and won both motos. In the opening round, Meeks took his Kawasaki to the lead, closely followed by Moorewood on a Honda. Moorewood has been concentrating on test riding and teaching and hasn't raced in five months. His second phlce position lasted till he came to a difficult right hand turn and dropped his Honda. Throughout the day there were more than a few riders who lost their position on that right hand turn. Rob Brown was right behind Moorewood, and the fall was all that Brown needed to take' over second place. Moorewood got underway in a hurry and was able to maintain third. Final moto action saw Meeks control the lead once more with Moorewood and Brown following. Overall it was Meeks, Moorewood and Brown on the payoff list. Micky Dymond was perhaps the most experienced rider in the 250cc Pro class, and winning was within his reach. The upcoming rider in this class was To.dd "Ultimate" Simmons who only has a couple 'of Pro races under his belt. Simmons took a fantastic second in the first moto behind Dymond to show that he was in the right class. Dymond eased out the final'moto win with Rick Roark and Tony Gomez finishing closest and knocking Simmons back to fourth by way of revenge against the newcomer. Payof.f wise it was Dymond, Roark and Gomez with Simmons barely missing the bucks. . There were only two.riders in the 500cc Pro race, but it was a good battle. "Robot" Rodgers and Jeff Conlin took to the track in the fitst"moto and they statted to exchange places. Then Conlin ran into Rodgers who quit afterwards and conceded defeat. Rodgers struck back in the final moto and led the race over Conlin, which gave Rodgers the overall victory. • Results 80 JR: 1. Steve Flanders (Yam); 2. Craig Miller (Suz); 3.
