Northern California-Northern Nevada-Oregon-Washington-Idaho-Utah-Alaska-Can~daNorthern California-Northern Nevada-Oregon-Was-hington-Idaho-Utah- NORTHERN DATELINE Wally Olson (7) inside of Dexter Humbard (7x) at Idaho ST. J Pelkey, Harsha double winners at Corvallis Indoor ST By Clay and Suanne Light CORVALLIS, OR, DEC. 4 t Barry Pelkey put his Megacycle Cams/Simpson Sports/Yamaha Sports Center Yamaha across the line twice tonight, when it counted, for a double demolition at Benton County Fairgrounds indoor short track. AMA Novice Jeff Harsha (Yamaha Sports Center/Data Contol) also took two, winning the Open A and Open Pro main events and, like Pelkey, took matching trophy dashes to boot. Dan Bennett (ND/Bel-Ray/ KRW/Out Front Number Plates/ Hon) took the Mini Pro main event, . but was forced into runner-up spots behind Pelkey in 250cc action. Mini mains kicked off the evening's program of indoor madness and saw Ed Portz (Eugene Suz) launch his RM80 off the line to top the Mini Beginner A Main. Next it was Kevin Lawrence's turn in the glory of it all to take the Mini Expert main over Yamaha-supported Jeff Daily. Lawrence came back to lead a Mini Pro main over Bennett, brother Mike Lawrence (Bennett Lectron/Out Front Number Plates/Hon) and Mike Oglesbee (ND/Maxima/Hon), but Bennett got serious on the last lap and took the win over Mike Lawrence, Oglesbee and early leader Kevin Lawrence. The 250cc Pro main had Pelkey once again on the pole position, a spot he much enjoyed all evening due to his domination of his heats and dashes. Pelkey was watched closely by teammate Frank Word III, who had transmission problems and was relegated to spectator status. Pelkey pulverized the start of the 15-lap main over Bennett, who was ramming from behind. Pelkey once again opened up a large lead with Bennett riding unfamiliar machinery and hol~ing off the advances of Fisher, Kendig and Lawrence. Pelkey had it all well wrapped up with a lap to go and went across the line for a six of six tally over Bennett, Fisher, Kendig and Lawrence. Harsha settled his dispute in the Open A Main with AMA Junior Dave Whiting (D&V Yam) and came back to do it again in the Open Pro main. Harsha took a walloping holeshot to stun the eight-rider final over Whiting, Semi-winner Chuck Glender (Free Lance Hair Design/KRW/ Light Racing Products/Hon), Bruce Turnbull (Yam), AMA Junior Jim Torpey (Power Master/C-A) and a slugfest between AMA Novices Mike Huffman (Hon) and Scott Annis (Ron Annis Yam). Harsha began to pull away at the half with Whiting and Glender duking it out for second. Harsha got out of shape and Whiting closed' to within a bike's length; but Harsha held on to win. Whiting was second, Glender third, Huffman fourth and Annis fifth, despite a sour motor on his TT500. Results OPEN PRO: 1. Jeff Harsha (Yam); 2. Dave Whiting (Yam); 3. Brown SEATTLE, WA; NOV. 28 Maybe it was the holiday weekend, or maybe it was the noise level hassle, whatever, only 55 -riders showed up for today's motocross at Thurston/Grays ORV Park. • Promoter Clay Burkhart and CMC Rep Eugene Boere did their homework and as a tesult motocross will continue at ThurSton/Grays Harbor ORV Park. All bikes checked this past Sunday met Washington state noise-level requirements. Previously, the bikes had been incorrectly tested. So if you stayed away because you were afraid you wouldn't pass, come out for the next event. They are working out a system for marking bikes that have already been tested, so there won't be a weekly test of all bikes, only those that are not marked. With nine riders, the 250cc Pro class was one of the biggest classes today. In moto one Rob Burkhart (Highland Hon) holeshot. Scott Tyler was trying to get by Rob and went down. Tacoma Kawasaki's Logan Edrington was in third when his chain came off putting him out of it. Dave Froembling (Highland Hon) got by Burkhart when he went down. In moto two Burkhart again holeshot. There was a big crash On the first corner when Scott Tyler fell and - Logan Edrington, with no place to go, did a "Flying W" over the bars. . Todd Paulson also chewed some dirt . in this one, but scrambled up to get back in it. Edrington worked his way up in the field only to tangle with Stan Lund (Kaw). Burkhart was leading until he dumped it on the 'whoops,' giving his spot to Froembling. Burkhart had to settle for a pair of deuces after Froembling aced the day. Third overall went. to Tom Moen (Seattle Hon) and fourth to Tim Olsen (Kaw). Results PEE WEE B: 1. Boris Portnoy (Yam). PEE WEE C: 1. Jamie Caldwell (Yam). MINI A: 1. Michael Jorgenson (Han). (Hon) and Steve Stephenson (Yam) battled with Utah's Dean James (Hon) in a fierce fray that kept the crowd on its feet. The race wasn't settled until the last lap, with Olson on top followed by Stephenson and James. The Novice action was concluded with . smooth-riding Curt Dice (Mai) heading the 250s and Greg Pruitt (Hon) winning the Open class. After a short intermission, the Mini Experts rolled up to the line to do battle. Toby Ashley (Hon) secured a win with a bike that was running about 15 grand I Again; the tension began to really build as the Expert program began. The Mini Expert class was won by Ritch Thurston and he came back· Ollt to take the I25cc Pro class as well. It took three restarts to get the 250cc Pros through the first turn alive and once more Gesick was leading and not looking back. Extremely aggressive riding and crashes involving as many as five riders per lap,. kept the scorers busy. Gesick steered clear of the mess and held first to the end, keeping his string of wins alive at three. Jerry Moore finished second with Mark Lenhardt third. The fans were also extremely pleased to see local rider Denny Lee (Yam) finish fourth, after recovering from a very serious auto accident this spring. Gesick's winning was finally cut short in the Open Pro main. After several restarts, Utah hotshoe Kim Best (Bul) jumped into the lead. Although Gesick pushed and tested 'Best the whole race, he just couldn't squeeze by. After 10 exciting laps, Best finished first, with Gesick second and Ricky Henson (Yam) third. Due to a bigger turn-out, Saturday's event added a couple of classes. Keegan Graves (Suz) won the Pee Wee class and Toni Williams (yam) lapped theentirefieldin the Women's race.
