TEN YEARS AGO Twenty-five hundred riders started in the largest motorcycle race in the world: The San Gabriel Valley M. C.'s Barstow to Vegas hare and hound. Tom Smith had the early lead on a 360 Yamaha, and then Gene Can· nady ran out in front on 350 Honda four-stroke. But by the time they reached the Nevada border, Cannady had lost two gears, and the lead belonged to the astounding Tom Brooks and his 125 DKW. Brooks might have been the first rider to win B-to-Von a small-bore, but his head pipe came loose and Smith repassed him to take the overall win. Brooks finished second with third overall going to the big Husky of A.C. Bakken. Fourth overall went to a desert irregular, former World MX Champ Rolf Tibblin (Hus). Fifth was the first 250cc Expert, Larry Pfutzenreuter (Bul). Jack Orndoff (Yam) ·was first Amateur and Mike Powers took first Novice on a 250 Montesa. There were' 1600 finishers. The AIle Jonsson Show - also known as the 1972 Trans-AMA MX Series ~moved to Carnegie Cycle Park in Livermore, CA, and the Swedish Maico rider won again. Second went to Suzuki's Roger DeCoster and Miroslav Halm put a factory CZ into third. Brad Lackey had one of his hest races of the series, taking top American honors and fourth overall. The 250cc Support class saw Peter Lamppu and his Kawasaki win over the Husky of Gary Semics. - Carl Cranke and Dick Mann battled for the overall lead in the annual Wilseyville hare scrambles. Mann ran into troubles and dropped to seventh in class, while Cranke went on to record the win. Speedway bikes got another chance at Ascot's half mile oval, and Mike Konle came up the winner in the Handicap main event. Sonny Nutter battled Mike Bast in the Scratch main before coming out the winner. Ascot Raceway was the site of the Golden State Championship half mile. Yamaha-mounted Kenny Roberts taking the Expert main over the Triumphs of Gary Scott and Ron Moore. Tom Horton (Tri) was the Junior winner, and Rob Morrison (Bul) took the Novice event. Dave Aldana (Nor) swept the Expert trophy dash. Macoo'. choice of racine eear Is Hl-Point ••. why not make It yours! TT action at Adelanto, CA, saw Mike Haney (Tri) run away with the Open Expert class. The battle for second and third was a battle between the 650 Triumph of Bob Sanders and the two-stroke 350 Bultaco of Mike Hannon. Sanders took the runner-up placing. The final MX race of all time was held at Lions Drag Strip in Wilmington, CA. Tim Hart took the 250cc Expert class over Ron DeSoto (CZ) and Billy Payne, Hart's Maico teammate.
