IIthern Nevada- Southern California-Arizona-Southern Nevada- Southern California-Arizona-Southern Nevada-Southern Call weather conditions finally. For the last two months it was as if Nature was conducting a personal vendetta against the California Racing Club, Saddleback or both. First. horrendous rains turned the track into a quagmire and, as soon as the area dried out, a grass fire blackened all the surrounding hills. Finally, it was moist ground, great traction, clear skies and a good course. All the Pros were riding in one race, with a three row start. First off were the Open bikes. and Denni-s- Briggs moked his Yamaha off the line to an immediate lead, at least for the first half mile. Greg Kammerman and Paul Thede were right on his back. Gordon Smith got a bad start, but passed Kammerman in the first lap and started to move up. That first lap saw as much position changing in the Open bike ranks as did the rest of the race. By the start of lap two, Smith had jumped to second and less than one lap later had taken over first to stay. Thede Slayed in the upper ranks in second and was always within a few seconds of Smith but could never quite catch up. Brad McLeod got the drop on the 250cc start, going into the first turn with a IO-yard lead. From then on his only competition was from the front running Open bikes and he had little trouble with them, motoring around for 45 minutes to take first 250cc and first overall. Troy Smith was off the line right behind McLeod but was forced to stay there as the two of them wove through the traffic and each took advantage of that as best as possible. Neither found an advantage over each other. but they both pa sed all others to finish first and econd overall and, of course, first and second 250s. The real excitement of the day was in the 125cc Pro event and it was a 2-D story; Denning and Dale. Mark Denning holeshot the start but only by a fraction of a second; Craig Dale was in his sli pstream going into the first turn. They began a wheel to wheel battle that lasted a full 45 minutes with absolutely no let-up. They were averaging a half of a lap in the lead, every lap! There's an old adage in racing that says, "The race is never over until the checkered flag." That took on a special meaning in this event, since there was no way of predicting the winner until you saw who was in the lead at the final turn. It was Denning who came storming across the line to take the 125cc win (and third overall). Dale got second I25cc after this fantastic race. lo-4 Q.) ,.0 a Q.) u Q.) O. Results OPEN PRO: 1.
