,uthern Nevada- Southern California-Arizona-Southern Nevada- Southern California-Arizona-Southern Nevada-~outhernCall Cline (1100 Suz) and Frew diced it out for second, with Cline holding on until lap 10 when a mechanical problem slowed him just enough for Frew to put Cline in third. The second race, Super Street, was Norm Benedum (750 Hon) all the way with Mick Frew taking second and "Mr. Hang-In-There," Mjke Williams, placing third. Frew and Williams wound up 2-3 behind the TZ750 in race three. Brian O'Neill pulled a respectable fourth on a dimunitive water-cooled 350 Yamaha two-stroke. In the fourth and final race, a Super Street event, Cline again demonstrated that he wins at least once every time. Williams, Frew and Greg Schmidt (750 Kaw) came in right behind. Probably the most successful racer of the day, though, was points leader Eugene Coward, who with a little pushing from Kevin Elliott on a 550 Kaw, won both his races and, if you ask me, the number one plate for next season. II High school motocross action continued tonight at Corona Raceway, and the Upland team produced 1-91 points towards their first outing triumph. Upland's closest threat was second place school Cerritos with 128, third went to Redlands with 106. One of Upland's top point scorers was Kawasaki-mounted Rick Lane. Lane used a flawles I-I combo to cap'ture the win in the highly competitive 125cc Novice class. In both motos Lane led from start to finish while Poly's Ron Chaco'n (Yam) threatened in second each time out for second overall. Third went to Redland's Yoshi Kubota (Suz) with a 3-3 tally. Another good class for Upland was Mini Novice; Ron Jardon (Yam) swept both· motos for the victory. Second went to teammate David Farris (Yam) and David Church (Suz) took third for Redlands. In the 175cc Novice class it was Redland's Lane Sporrong(Yam) who took the overall after completing the night with a 4-2 combination. Finishing second to Sporrong was Ken Stanfield (Hon) of Upland after totaling a 2-3 outing. Poly's Paul Chacon (Suz) took third while Upland's Steve Weck (Yam) settled for fourth. In the regular unattached classes, Albert Castro (Suz) took command of the first division of the Mini Beginner class - taking the win each time out. Castro had to contend with Sloan Cooper (Kaw), who finishe~ with two close seconds. A 3-3 tally by Chris Lester (Kaw) was good enough for third overall and Garth Tarlow (Yam) had to be content with fourth. Division two, although it was a tough battle, was won by Suzukimounted Rodney Sampson. Sampson took the overall by trading moto wins with second place finisher Kevin Bussey (Yam).·Sampson won the tie breaking second moto. Third went to Don Burke (Yam) while fourth went to Billy Oberg (Suz). Results HIGH SCHOOL MINI NOV: 1. Ron Jordon (Yam); 2. David Farris (Yam); 3. David Church (Suz). 100 NOV: 1. Holley flies at SRA Black Cat GP By Jeannette Fisher VALENCIA, CA, OCT. 31 As Mini Expert Keith Senn blasted off the start of Southland Racing Association's Black Cat GP at Indian Dunes, it was the start of another spectacular race day. As Senn led the pack from start to finish, Amateur Gary Lacy followed in second. Midway through the race Lacy dropped back, giving way to Novice Ron Jordon to fill in the second place position. At the end Senn led the pack across the finish with Jordon in second and Donny McGlaughlin, a Novice, in third. First Beginner trophy went to Jeff Chorron. As the dust cleared, the start of the biggest race of the day was underway, the Seniors and Vets. Bill Saluman (Open Vet) led the pack but Rick Hall (25Occ Vet), and Charlie Conway (Open Sr) were breathing down his neck in hopes of taking the overall position. Near the end of the race, Tom Mitchell (250cc Vet) moved into fourth and John Perry (Open Vet) moved into fifth. As the checkered flag waved it was Saluman overall with Hall in second and Conway in third. Mitchell and Perry finished fourth and fifth. . Randy Hayes led the 250cc class for the first two laps until Randy Norman overtook him for the lead. Hayes then was passed by Craig Adams who moved into second and into a lead threatening position. However, throughout the race Norman put little space between himself and Craig. In the meantime Troy Smith had Frank Mazur (1) and Michel Mercier dueled on Kawasakis at AFM's final. moved up on Adams' rear fender. Further down Don Bizzy was holding onto the first Amateur position. N orman claimed the win and Adams took second with Smith in a close third. Bizzy held first Amateur and Mike Watson took second Amateur. Da·ve Welty won the 200cc race but h-e had to battle with Quinton Smith who led the race until the sixth lap when Welty slipped by him. Todd Broussard held the third place spot until Smith dropped out, letting Broussard slide right into the second place position, while Rob Hall established the third place spot. By the time the Open race had come time to tan the earlier races had left the track rough and rutty. As Jim Holley pulled up to the starting line everyone knew that he meant business. As Holley took the holeshot, he made the rough and rutty track look like glass. Randy Norman, with one win already, was looking for another as he pursued Holley. Throughout the race Holley pulled distance between himself and his competitors. Norman held second while Craig Adams and Gordon Ward followed. Holley took the checkered with ease and Norman took home second. Ward settled into third while Adams followed in fourth.. Results MINI EX: 1. Keith Senn. MINI NOV: 1. Ron Jordon; 2. WILLOW SPRINGS, CA, NOV. 14 Frank Mazur put on a dazzling display of riding as he blazed to three wins at the American Federation of Motorcyclists' meet at Willow Springs, holding his overall points lead with only one more race to go for the year. - In 600cc Modified Production Frank took on Michel Mercier and Joe Montoya. It was a tight three-way pass and repass match until Montoya fell off in turn five on the seventh lap and Mazur squeaked off the win. Mazur again fought five-time Canadian National Ice Racing champ Mercier in 600cc Stock Production, this time in a game of wits rather than sheer horsepower. Each lap they were side by side down the front straight and Mazur would get the lead into turn one, but Mercier found a spot going into turn five that he could get by Frank each time. Mazur was getting a better drive out of turn seven so he usually caught Michel by the straightaway. On the last lap, though, Michel made a slight miscalculation in turn three, which allowed Mazur to stretch his lead to a couple of bikelengths to hold the number one spot at the flag. But MerCier, unfamiliar with club rules, disqualified himself when he found that his lack of instruments was illegal for the class. Kevin Peltz, who has been absent from the southern racing scene for months, showed he hasn't lost his touch as he took the Formula Two and 750cc Super Street wins. In 750cc Super Street, Kevin held the number one overall spot over Open classer Denny Doherty until the fourth lap, when Doherty caught him on the front straight and took off to win the Open class. Kevin held second overall to win the 750cc class over Ducati-mounted Tony Guest, who diced it up with John Robertson (who took third 750cc), Doug Filangeri, Denny Fryer and Mark Thomas.
