thern Nevada- Southern California-Arizona-Southern Nevad flat tire, lost his clutch and blew a piston almost simultaneously. Needless to say, he pushed his bike back to his van and watched the rest of the race. On the subsequent lap, Turner made a "splendiferous" move around LaBorde. Thereafter it was only a matter of how big a lead he would have over Nev and Tim Sinclair at the finish line. Nev got the holeshot in moto two. Ron then led LaBorde and Sinclair through laps two and three. Again, LaBorde took the lead for laps four and five. Then smooth riding "Radical Ron" took the lead on lap six. This time he stayed there. Again, Sinclair was third behind LaBorde. It was a helluva show. In the Open class, Turner repeated his sterling performance. This time, Eric MacCracken, who led for two laps in moto two, supplied the competition. Tracy Oswell was third in the first stanza, but DNF the second moto as Ron Gibson took the show spot. Gary Denton went wire to wire in the first 125cc moto with Pat Hubbs in hot pursuit. However, Hubbs faded in the last two laps as both boys ran away from the rest of the pack. Believe it, these guys were flying around that course. Jeff Prieur took the show spot in this one. In the second moto, Hubbs took out like a man possessed wi th another crazy (Denton) right behind. They once more left Prieur to hold off the rest of the pack. Denton saved his best for the last lap. He made a great move in passing Hubbs near the end to take the checkered flag. The 125cc Intermediates put on a great show, although it was for second place as Rodney Phelps easily outdistanced his rivals. Johnny Ray was second until he pulled off a plowing job on a portion of the track. Ron Barnum beat Jake Roach to the flag for second. The second moto was a replay for Phelps, but this time Johnny stayed aboard his Suzi for the entire performance and easily took second ahead of Barnum, Tony Bienert and Rocket Roach. Everyone received a couple of quick practice laps and off they went. Well, there was one restart when three riders jumped the gate, but into the first (or last) turn, Conway and Peterson were up front. Conway fell and was quickly in last. Tracy Meeks took the lead next with his 125cc as the riders were bravely double-jumping the Pro section backwards. Meeks crashed on the third lap in the stutterbumps and retired from the affair. Scott Cavness now moved into second and Conway fought his way up to .third. Just before the white flag, in the tum after the big jump and before the drop-off, Peterson went down. As he was trying to restart his bike, Cavness went inside and Conway went outside. Cavness clipped Peterson's bike, the two went down and Conway had the lead. Peterson restarted his bike and was second, but going into the Pro section he high-centered the cases on a jump and crashed again. Behind him in the middle of it all, Cavness went down as did Trone and Heinrich. Trone and Heinrich untangled first, but ran into each other on the next jump. Out of it all, Peterson regained second and Robert Rodgers, who had been last, emerged in third. Conway took the win worth $60, Peterson was second for $40 and Rodgers earned $15. The season can't end without mention of the Crew race, billed as the "Race of Desparation." Few of the participants had their own machines and so they borrowed them, mostly 80s. There was a lap of practice in which my spouse put Eddie Webb's bike into the mudhole. The crowd went wild! Leaving the running of the race to the parents and riders was as much a disaster as the race itself. Yours truly avoided being involved with a passion, even though they tried to embarrass me into killing myself. There were three different scorers for this two lap affair and none of them came up with the same results. Marvin Coolbaugh, the head flagger, was first to the finish line, but had been boasting he was going to cheat for weeks so he was promptly disqualified. The win ended up with Dan Jones, an ambulance attendant, and his trophy was a pie in the face. Photo-man Tom Corley ended up second and Todd Peithmann, our finish flagger, was third.
