Although the 125cc Intermediates were down a little Sunday, we can't help but mention another great performance by Burger King Yamaha rider Chris Swift, who once again went four for four and may be an Expert before year's end. The Novice classes produced a career first win for Bill Wiggins off a steady 2-2 effort in the Modifieds, and a very impressive sweep in the Stocks by Anthony DeBenedetti. Going back to the Minis, out of town member Joey Mendoza (Kaw) parlayed two wins and two seconds to capture both tlle Stock and Modified 12-16 year old Novice classes; the Modifieds a tie-breaker over Tim Galceran. Steve Furuya (Yam) as also a double winner as he again swept both of the 9-11 year old Novice classes. Justin Rich pulled out a very close tie-breaker in the Modified Pee Wee class. CMC Trans-Cal sportsmen wind up at Saddleback By Tom Corley ORANGE, .CA, OCT. 23 The sportsman side of the Continental Motosport Club/Miller High Life Trans-Cal Series held its final event at Saddleback Park. As a fitting end, three riders went home with new 1983 motorcycles supplied by the manufacturers. Arizona's Sha un Kalos devastated the 80cc Stock and Modified 12-16 Intermediate classes to take home a new minicycle. Ernest Gonzalez put together 2-1-2-1-2 placings through five 250cc Junior events to emerge as top Junior. And R&D Racing Engines' Rudy Dickinson was the only rider to win every moto he entered, sweeping the I25cc Intermediate class and coming out top Intermediate. Kalos, Gonzalez and Dickinson all moved up in rank at the conclusion of the series. 1983 machinery was used by most of the fast minicycle riders. Kalos proved the worth of the new watercooled Suzuki RM80 and won both the 80cc Stock and Modified Intermediate races aboard the new bike. In the first Stock moto Shaun was out in front of Dean Matson and Shane Trittler. Matson's father, an airplane pilot, picked up two white Yamaha YZSOs from New Zealand. Trittler raced tl)e pew Honda water-cooled CR80. Matson held second place behind Kalos till he was passed by Trittler on the tree .section of the track. Taking fourth and fifth were Derek Nye and Lance Smith. Kalos took control of the final Stock race, and once agin Matson was right after him. Trittle held third place till he went down with only two laps to go, allowing Smith to take over third. Taking fourth was Trittler and fifth went to Gamble. Overall Kalos won the race with two firsts, Matson placed second ahead of Trittler, Smith and Nye. Kalos took yet another victory in the 80cc Modified Intermediate class with Smith improving greatly from the Stock race and taking second. Todd "King Bu Fu" Simmons engaged in a. tough 250cc Intermediate battle with Kevin Brown. In the Nn."'. Soathern Call1ornl.·Artso first moto Brown led for most of the race till Simmons made the pass in a corner. David Soma and Pat Delligatta finished third and fourth. In an easier race Simmons won the final mota over Soma and Brown. Overall it was Simmons, Soma, Brown and "Hodad" Melton. Simmons claimed the overall series win as well. Jim Ashley had the most clashing outfit with a red Honda and a bright green helmet. Ashley had a fine ride in the 500cc Junior class and took second overall. The winner was Steve Dawson who passed Ashley in the same corner in both motos. Shawn Lane of Answer Products won the 500cc Intermediate class today, but Alan Olson took the overall series win. In the first motoLane had the lead till Olson made the pass by the finish. In the final race Jim Harris was leading until he swapped off his Yamaha and caused Olson to collide. Lane was behind too and able to avoid them to capture the lead. Vic Walker came through in second with Olson still taking a fine third. Overall it was Lane, Olson and Walker. Turner, Hubbs win second leg of GRS By Bert Valenzuela _ "Radical Ron" Turner repeated his twin win performance on this, the second leg of the Ghost Rider Series. Eric MacCracken led Ron for half of the first Open Pro moto, then Turner assumed what he has come to think of as his rightful place at the head of the pack. It was a joy to behold as Eric repeatedly shut the door on Ron for six laps in a beautiful display of bikemanship. However, Ron was not to be denied and put on a thrilling burst to pass Eric and hold him off to the flag. Ronnie Gibson was third and Bill Jewell fourth. In the 250cc Pro class it was again Ron Turner with Eddie Perry second and Bill Jewell third and right behind. It :went pretty much the same in both motos. The 125cc race was the one that had the crowd gasping and "oohing" throughout. Pat Hubbs and Gary 1 • Results OPEN PRO: 1. Ron Turner (Hon); 2. Ron Gibson (Hon); 3. Bill ~II (Mai). 250 PRO: 1. Turner, Denton take first of Ghost Rider Series By Bert Valenzuela SUNRISE VALLEY, CA, NOV. 7 \ Denton diced it out for the first lap, then, midway through lap two, Gary took the lead. After that it was cardiac corner as Gary and Pat continued their dicing right up to the checkered flag. The scorers Ieported there was only the width of a tire (3.65 inches) separating the two bikes at the finish as everyone kept asking "Who won?" Whooey, it was dose! Jeff Prieur was third and Dave Pettigrew fourth. In the second moto, it was Hubbs in front and Denton right on his posterior all the way, and respoflsive to the crowd's encouragement, they put on another show of gruelling dueling. They once again left the pack far behind, but this time Gary fell back on the last lap as Pat crossed the line first, and again it was Prieur in third. The 125cc Intermediates again staged a great performance for the faithful. This time Goleta's Mike Moore, riding like a Pro, took the day's honors. As in the firstlegof this classic, the Apple Valley gang of Johnny Ray, Rob Barnum and Jake Roach battled it out for the place position. This time, "geologist Johnny" stayed on his bike for the entire race (both motos) and handily took second, although, Barnum made a run at him in the last lap of the second moto. Johnny crossed the line fovr seconds ahead of Rob. Rocket Roach had mechanical problems and settled for fourth ahead of Hesperian Scott Graham, AV's Tony Bienert and Barstow's Jim Owen. Interestingly enough, with the exception of Mike Moore, all the boys in this race were desert denizens. There's a little pride and local "bragging rights" are involved. That may account for the hotly contested races these lads put on. • SUNRISE VALLEY, CA, OCT. 31 The weather was great, the track was in great shape, and the riders were great. What more could one ask for? More riders, is what. The turnout wasn't great, but the races were superb! Ron Turner garnered wins in the 250 and Open Pro classes as he displayed the form that brought him renown. Ron took firsts in the 250cc class after what started out as a hot duel, twixt he, Andy Jefferson and Nev LaBorde, dematerialized when Andy's bike fell apart. Ron led lap one with Nev and Andy following in that order. Lap two ended with Nev in first and Ron second. Andy passed Ron midway through the third lap as both riders put on a dazzling display of dicing. On lap five, Andy got around LaBorde with Ron right behind them. Then disaster overtook AJ when he got a • JJ_. ..~ _ ,. I
