He went on to take the win ahead of Metzger. Tim Clayton managed to sneak past both F. Clayton and Meggs for third while Meggs held on for fourth. The second moto was Metzger's as soon as the gate touched the ground. Roberg stayed close enough to the leader to threaten, but the moto win and overall victory went to Metzger. Roberg settled for second while· third went to 5-3 finisher Dennis W. Adams (Yam). In the Mini Novice class Mike Sandanc (Suz) emerged on top after completing both motos with a win. Sandanc had to defend his lead from hard charging Riverside Suzuki rider Mike Michetti in the first moto, winning only by inches. In moto two, Michetti had control of the race until the final lap, when Sandanc made his move on Michetti to overtake the lead and overall. Michetti took second while third and fourth went to Dean Keeling and West Coast Furniture's David Church (Suz). Results PEE WEE: 1. Edwards Moraga (Vam); 2. Tony Espinoza (Yam); 3. Lee Ford (Yam). Thompson, Larlfin win at Arizona State Fair By Peggy Stewart PHOENIX, AZ, NOV. 4 Tonight was the night of racing that happens only once a year. It was the annual shoTt track race held during the State Fair. Jon Sellers did a fantastic job of preparing the track, as it was the best that anyone could remember it being. All the classes were fulL The 250cc class had four heats of riders, and the Open class had three. Riders had to finish in either first or second in their heats or semis to ride the A main, otherwise they had to qualify to run the B main. The 250cc A main found Rick Witte taking on the job of being "leader of the pack" off the start. Guy Warner followed close behind. Out of turn three Warner broke loose, causing a three-bike crash that included himself, Darin Balderston, and Rick Williams. The race was stopped, as Balderszton had to be checked for injuries. All riders were able to make it to the start line for the restart. This time it was #3X, KRW-ATK sponsored Roger Thompson from southern California taking the lead. Thompson had plenty of breathing room. He stretched out his comfortable lead to take the checkered flag. The rest of the riders were so close, that at times you couldn't tell who was in what place. Dave Robinson tried to hold his number two spot, but Bryan Hayes was determined to slip by. Hayes and Robinson did hold off the other riders to finish in second and third. Bob Russell and Kelly Larkin both tried for the holeshot in the Open A main. Russell, however, didn't feel like sharing this honor, so he proceeded to take the lead. Russell and Larkin managed to get a small lead over Pat Anton ides. Roger Thompson moved his way through the pack to take over fourth. Just past the halfway mark of the race, Russell dumped his bike coming out of turn two, and ended his riding for the night. Larkin moved into first, with Thompson getting by Antonides to take second. The 250cc B main saw Victor Hensley lead the race from start to finish. The action in this race was for second through fifth. Joe Schneider had heavy pressure from behind, but held firm to take second. Craig Martin did some great riding, as he moved from seventh to third. Randy Jacobs and Donnie Norman had to settle for fourth and fifth. Shaun Larkin, who hasn't been riding his Open bike in awhile, grabbed the holeshot in the Open B main. Bart Beninati grabbed second, Virgil Zumstein third, and Dave Robinson fourth. Larkin stayed in front and breezed through a nice win. However, the same was not true for the next three spots. Coming to the checkered flag, three riders were side by side. Beninati, Zumstein and Robinson all fought to get the number two spot, but it was Zumstein by an inch for second place, Beninati in third, and Robinson in fourth. Results 250 A MAIN: 1. Roger Thompson; 2. Bryan Hayes; 3. Deve Robinson. OPEN A MAIN: 1. Kelly Larkin; 2. Roger Thompson; 3. Pat Antonides. 50 B MAIN: 1. Vietor Hensley; 2. Joe Schneider; 3. Craig Martin. OPEN B MAIN: 1. Shaun Larkin; 2. Virgil Zumstein; 3. Bart Beninati. CONSOLATION RACE: 1. Mike Stawart. Rosenberg, Frampton power at Dunes' . Stadiumcross By Bob Alloy VALENCIA, CA, OCT. 24 There were many different discriptions of the new outdoor stadium at Indian Dunes' Old Timers motocross. All the way from, ''I'm going home" to, "This is really great." One thing you can say is that it's different. The track has about everything, from triple stadium jumps to a water jump which turned into gooey mud, which many Old Timers experienced quite a bit of.
