Bowman tops Dubach in classic 125cc Pro battle By Ter:ry Whytal ORANGE, CA, NOV. 6 Suzuki riders Doug Dubach and Gary Bowman provided spectators at this weeks Saturday Saddleback Motocross race Aaron Post wrapped up the ARRA number one plate .at Willow Springs. (Continued/rom page 23) - the last race, it's quite impressive. Earl Roloff was also impressive, he entered five races, won four of them, and took second, to Whitney Blakeslee, in the fifth. In the 750cc Box Stock class, Roloff and Mike Krolick mixed it up. Earl was right on Mike's tailpipe until the last turn of the last lap, when Roloff pulled a classic turn nine pass to grab the win. Earl has done very well this year, his first as a road racer. Steve Reynosa took two more easy wins 600cc Super Street and 600cc four Stroke GP, taking the championship in both classes, on the Curt Jordan-tuned Honda that has kept him undefeated for months now. Doug Toland took the holeshot in the 600cc Box Stock, but was in for an unexpected battle with French Canadian racer Michel Mercier. Mercier shadowed Toland until the halfway point of the race, but Mercier's unfamiliarity with the track showed, and Toland started to pull away, leaving Michel to take second. Walt Nittoshould have stayed home' in bed instead of racing. After taking second in 600cc Super Street, he • crashed in 600cc Production. But that wasn't enough for him. He fixed up the bike and went out in 600cc Box Stock, but only made it as far as the fourth lap before he and aJ1.other rider fell off again. But luckily both were unhurt. Bob Rodrick was looking good as he took his amazingly fast RD400 to the 450cc Super Street and 500cc GP wins. Earlier in the year Rodrick won Open GP with the same machine. In the Vintage and Classic race, ARRA starter Glen Hobbs battled Mick Ofield, both men mounted on classic Nortons. Hobbs ended up with the win after a good show. Bill Burdett and Chris Scott diced it up for third overall and at the finish were side by side, with Scott finishing first, but Burdett still winning his class. This year has not been the best of years, with a lot of motorcycle people (and quite a few car racers) lost or seriously injured. Mike O'Brien and Mark Remond will not be forgotten by those of us who knew them. Ne~t year, hopefully, will be better. Results VINTAGE I: 1. David Fiorelli (BSA); 2. Marc Johnson; 3. The riders dueled throughout most of both motos before Bowman finally took the win. Bowman gated well in the first moto with Dubach stuck in traffic. Dubach got on the gas within a few laps, however, and worked his way past Honda's Dave Berger and Yamaha pilot Rik Neilsen. Dubach dueled with second place Johner Kight, on a Honda, for a few laps, then closed in on Bowman. Bowman kept the gas on and held off Dubach's charges for a few laps before dropping to second. Dubach went on to win the moto. Dubach and Bowman led the field early in round two with Bowman holding a small edge over Dubach in the early laps. Dubach's Suzuki developed an exhaust leak and began to slow near the halfway point, and Bowman powered away with the win and overall victory. Dubach went home with the second place cash and Kight picked up. third. Suzuki rider Gary Dircks held off a determined charge by Suzuki-mounted Tony Gomez to top the 250cc Pro class with a I-I score. Dircks controlled the action up front for most of both motos, but Gomez made strong come-from-behind drives to nearly unseat Dircks after Yamaha rider Vince McMahon DNF with mechan~ ical problems. Honda. rider Andy . Guth rounded out the top three. Maico rider Alan Olson dominated the Vet Expert class today in spectac•~l.ar fashi9~' 9.1~on, ~ned '!I? com- manding leads in each moto and nearly lapped the field en route to his victory. Maico-mounted Marino Bastionell finished in the runner-up position while Bille Ham took third on another Maico. Results OPEN PRO: 1. Jeff Conlin (Husl; 2. Don Griewe (KTM); 3. Benavidez cruises at Great Pumpkin GP By Kit Palmer CORONA, CA, OCT. 31 Because of the previous day's rain storm, what was thought to be a Sunday spent sloshin' around in the mud, turned out to be a sunny and almost dust-free day of racing at Corona's Great Pumpkin Grand Prix. If you missed this year's G PGP, you missed one of the best grand prix R.A.C.E. has ever produced. One rider to take advantage of the best was Yamaha-mounted Juan "Burrito" Benavidez. Benavidez's rampage began when he grabbed the straddle-the-frontwheel start, closely followed by Team Montoya's Robert Reisinger (Suz). In third was Brian Fry (Hon) while Greg Zitterkopf (Yam) and Randy Rodriguez (Mai) followed in third and fourth. Up front, Reisinger managed to keep within sight of Burrito, but the leader's pace was a bit too much for Reisinger to handle. Meanwhile, in 21st place after the completion of lap one was Cycle World's Don Griewe (KTM) but not for long. Griewe heid the throttle wide-open until he had overtaken the third position by the fifth go-around. By this time Benavidez's lead had grown to a very comfortable margin over Reisinger. Benavidez went on to take the easy win followed by Reisinger, Griewe, Fry and Suzuki's Bob Elliot. In the 250cc Pro class it was Scott Manning (Yam) who shot into the early lead while Jim Brodie (Hon) and Brad McLeod (Yam) pursued. On the warpath was 'Goat Breker aboard a Kawasaki. Breker, by the third lap, had managed to pass five riders to capture the second spot. There was still quite a distance between the first two runners, but Manning's Yamaha began running sour, 'so the gap narrowed to only a few feet. During the fourth lap, Breker took advantage of Manning'S crippling machine to take over the lead. Soon after, Manning had to pull out of the race, handing second over to Malcolm Smith's Vince McMahon (Yam). McMahon, nearly dead last off the line, put together a very impressive ride by picking off riders, at least • 11" • ~ •
