damage and impact on other useI'! rather than on how to improve recrea· tion opportunities - have alread~ wasted $75,000 of the grant on a "User Interests Survey" that has only confirmed what the ORV Represen· tatives have been telling Mr. Cox for years: Forget your "professiona plans." ORV users don't want plan· ned community campgrounds, fancy facilities and campfire circles with Ranger Rick. Just give us trails, lot.! of t.rails and a reasonably flat place to set up camp, and leave us alonel Perhaps Mr. Cox feels the ORV Representatives are dreaming when they think a Statewide trail system will ever be approved in California. Well, Mr. Cox, perhaps the first mean· ingful step forward may soon be: forthcoming.. Outpost supports PDOD As you may know - the Outpost Cafe has long been a supporter of the desert, off-road and cross country cyclists. And again this year - in memory of the great Barstow-to-Vegas . trips of old - we welcome all the bikers this Thanksgiving weekend. and to show our appreciation for all the support we have received from them - we will contribute all the money received from Phantom Duck riders to the PDOD Legal Fund. Each cafe customer should write on the back of his or her guest check, "to PDOD Legal Fund." We'll tote them up and send Louis the support money - hope it's big too! This will go from 6 a.m. Friday the 26th through midnight, Nov. 28. Wear your club colors, too; we love 'em. GEORGE & BON IE NEWTON Owners, Outpost Cafe Station Out Post Junction, CA DearAMA... As eight-year members of the'AMA and total supporters of the organization, we would like to know who gives you, (AMA) the right to change the National motocross format? After speaking to many motocross riders it is quite obvious that very few, if any, of them would like the change. We cannot see how the change will help the sport. Do you realize how hard it would be for a young motocross rider to reach his goal, a factory ride, when your change will cut down the number of factory rides available tremendously? Stop and think, why would Honda need nine factory riders to compete for one number one plate? You say you're "tired of being pushed around" by the major factories, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, etc. That is a cop-out. Stadium races and outdoor races will go on with or without the AMA. Without the factories and their motorcycles there would be no races. The Trans-Cal MX series is a perfect example; nothing but top notch racing. It is a known fact that without the factory stars you will not have any spectators at the races. If ydur professional competition board is so qualified to make such a • adical cp .rge then.; tell us why is everybody so upset with the decision? In closing we hope the AMA reads and complies with the letter in Cycle News, Nov. 3, 1982, from Mr. Goodwin, president of Stadium Motorsport Corp. It does not make sense to sue the factories with our membership fees. If the factories happen to lose, all they would have to do is raise the price of motorcycles they sell to us. Don't get us wrong - the sport needs leadership, but as far as we are concerned Continental Motosports Club could do the job just as well. JOHN FOSTER TIM FOSTER Long Beach, CA Corva on EDAW I read with interest and amusement the letter by Dave Cox in your Nov. 10 issue. My first impression was that Mr. Cox was motivated to write by his belief in the election polls that said Tom Bradley would be the next Governor of California. It impresses me that Mr. Cox has apparently been able to ignore the directions of ex-Governor Brown, and federal and state regulations, by discriminating against small business concerns on the basis of lack of experiencel It amazes me that letting a contract to pursue a Statewide trails system had to be mandated by the legislature rather than being actively sought by Mr. Cox in his capacity as Chief, Office of Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation. The selection of EDAW, Inc. (which we have been told stands for "Environmentalists, Deadbeats And Whimps by a member of the firm), was based on the ORV Representatives' " .. .lack of professional planning experience. " Mr. Cox suggests ~at the ORV Representatives would not have developed a plan acceptable to ORV users, environmentalists, legislators, and most importantly the Chief, Office of OffHighway Motor Vehicle Recreation. A plan for ORV users, by ORV users, he says, would be " ...a real waste of $225,000 of OHV Funds." The fact is that Mr. Cox and his "professional planners" - whose experience in ORV Recreation Planning has been limited to advising . how. to minimize enviconmental, Please add a correction to the Distri 37 Road Riding letter I sent, published in issue 43, Nov. 10. I stated that the next District 3 point run will be the Cycle News Barstow to Vegas run; this is in error.
