TEN YEARS AGO The Trans-AMA's weekly MX bout was held on the turf of Carlsbad Raceway; a preliminary event before the organizers could get a 500cc MXGP sanction. The surprise of the day was when Kawasaki-mounted American Brad Lackey grabbed the holeshot in the first moto and held on for three laps before being passed. Husky's Heikki Mikkola won the moto over Ake Jonsson (Mai), but Jonsson won the second round for overall honors. (As an FIM warm-up, this race ran two 45-minute motos instead of the three motos run in other Trans-AMA events.)Roger DeCoster (Suz) finished 3-2 for second overall. Mikkola was third with a 1-4, and Lackey was top Yank with a 6-7. Bob Grossi (Hus) took the Support class in front of Greg Robertson (CZ). The Mexicali-to-La Paz Baja 1000 saw a new motorcycle record set as Rolf Tibblin and Gunnar Nilsson recorded a time of 19 hours and 15 minutes while taking the motorcycle' win on their 450 Husqvama. Tibblin rode the first half of the 912-mile race, and Nilsson diced with eventual overall winner Pamelli Jones and his monster Ford Bronco in the second half. Second motorcycle went to the 400 Suzuki of Ron Bishop and Don Bohanon. Third bike in was another big Husky; this one was ridden by Mickey Quade and Bruce Dunford. Wra SUPERCROSS Dave Miller won the 125cc Senior class in an AME motocross at Osteens Park. Tim Battenschlag was the 125cc . Senior victor, and John Fackler bested the big bores. Future MX star Gary Denton won the 1OOcc Beginner clash, but the 250cc Junior winner was future flat tracker Dennis Briggs. Ron Self (Mai) won the 250cc Expert class of a Sunnyvale, CA, motocross over Parry Klassen (CZ). Self went on to finish first in the 500cc Experts ahead of Henry Halbach (CZ). Rick Hocking and Cory Pax teamed on a Honda four-stroke to win 250cc honors in a marathon at Champion Raceway in San Francisco, CA. The Open class fell to Mike McQueen and Darrel Courtwright on a Husky. A few bombs were dropped at the Tokyo Motorcycle Show. Yamaha unveiled a Wankel-engined machine, dubbed the RZ201. It was watercooled, displaced 660cc with a claimed horsepower of 68, and sported three disc brakes. Honda debuted a 125cc • trials machine named the Bials. The 250cc Intermediate class was a Maico sweep, led by Mike Bell. Class C guys like John Hatdey and Dave Aldana took on Class A racers like Mike Bast and Danny Becker in a speedway race on the half mile oval of Ascot Park.
