Berluti blasts round six of Nevada Championship MX By Moto Cepo FERNLEY, NV, OCT. 24 Under rain threatening skies and a superbly prepared, dust free track, Alan Berluti White's Cycle Husqvama provided most Randy Pockrandt at Prairie City. Mark Dowers had a brilliant ride to win the 250cc Expert class. Dowers got a midpack start and worked his, way up to second overall. The most embarrassing part of it for the other 250 riders was the fact that he did it on a 1979 2500R Husky; the same one he has been riding for four years! The 200cc Expert class had close racing all day, but at 'the end it was Barrett Brown who had a great ride, 'winning the class and fifth overall. Next lO Mark Dowers, the other hero of the day was Joe McCormick. He rode a worn out 1978 PEI75 to an unbelievable eighth overall, second 200cc Expert. I believe he got the bike from the Salvation Army and the way it looked after the race, nobody would want it! Troy Delfs could not quite catch the radical McCormick, but finished a very respectable third 200cc Expert, 13th overall. Willis Taylor rode smart all day to' win the 125cc Expert class after early leader Edd Price dropped off the pace with clutch problems and a flat tire. Jim Jones won the OTHG Expert class with the largest margin of all the Expert classes. Gary Forster of G&G Cycle in Albany, OR, put a little icing on the cake for all the Amateur riders. He gave away $25 in cash to every first place Amateur rider. That might have been all Ron Lemon needed as' he '~ent out and not only won the 25OccAmateur class, but was first Amateur overall. Dan Harte collected some of the cash by winning the 125cc class for his first time. The race was its usual success with everyone appearing to have a good time. The generosity of G&G Cycle definitely did not go unnoticed. In these hard times we need more people like the super owner of G&G Cycle. I'm also happy to report that Ore- , gon's number one rider Brad Turnidge had successful knee surgery and should be riding by spring. Unofficial Results 26 OVERALL: 1. Ron DiJlioo (Yam); 2. A eombined class of Open and 125cc Pros saw Shirt Jazz rider Jay Heying (Mai) take the holeshot and lead the Open Pros for the en tire first moto. Don Franklin (Mai) and AI McElroy (Mai), riding for Dirt Jazz, tried but could not catch the elusive Heying. The seeond moto looked to be a repeat of the first wi th Heying taking the holeshot, followed by Dan Dossey (Carson Yam), Franklin and Mc Elroy. Heytng was playing his first molO disappearing act when suddenly he began slowing. Franklin started turning up the wick and passed Heying about halfway through the moto, Dossey was next, then McElroy. A disappointed Heying had lost third gear and dropped out of the race. Franklin went on to take the overall, with Dossey second and McElroy third. In the 125cc Expert class Keith Fox (Yam) and Shanon Harjes (Yam) diced constantly through both motos with Fox in the first position both times-,_ The 250cc Pro class provided all the action one could hope for after Robbie Hadlock (Suz) grabbed the holeshot in the first molO. An amazing jockeying for positions was underway behind him with Alan Ber'Iuti in pursuit, J. McKinzie (Hon) third and Reno Kawasaki rider Jeff Cloutier in fourth. These four riders would let 'it all hang out, but only one would emerge the winner. Hadlock and Berluti w.ere providing the action for the lead position with Ber- , luti trying every way he could to get around, but Hadlock kept closing the door. Twenty minutes 1Oto the race, Berluti made a pass stick and it was Hadlock's turn to pressure, but time ran out. About 10 seconds back, McKenzie and Cloutier were providing the same show for third place with Cloutier making a daring last lap pass for that position. , Cloutier took the holeshot the second molO with Hadlock in tow. Berluti had a midpack start, then laid it down in a corner and came around last, but moving fast. Cloutier led the first few laps, then Hadlock made his move to the front and by then, Berluti took the lead from Cloutier, but Jeff was not going to give it up without a fight. This had both of them riding .to the ragged edge, within inchesĀ·of each other at the checkered flag, what a race! Berluti won. Results 60 NOV: 1. Tony Marshall. 80 NOV: 1. Shawn Curtis; 2. Coupe, Rebuck, Pockrandt top Prairie City MX By "Nuclear" Neukam SACRAMENTO, CA, OCT. 24 Dave Coupe said he was glad it happened on the other side of the hill, where no one could see him. Randy Pockrandt shucked Steve Vlahos holeshot the opening 125cc molO as Pockrandt followed in second. Brad Bruns passed Pockrandt toward the end of the moto and moved in to challenge Vlahos. Vlahos and Bruns diced until Bruns bit out. Vlahos won and Pockrandt finished second. Bruns was third and Rich Morgan fourth. Mark Zeisler rounded out the top five. Steve Arena put his Suzuki in front of two more Suzukis with Pockrandt and Vlahos mounted on one each. Pockraodt slid out in a left-hander and dropped to fifth as Vlahos inher-' ited second and Zeisler moved up to third. Vlahos closed in on Arena and put some slick moves on him to pass and take over the lead. Vlahos bit out, dropping to fifth and Arena was back in the lead.
