On Oct. 21, over a little pizza and beer, the Washington Motorcycle Road Racing Association elected 1983 officers. They are: Mel Nordberg, president; Lane Campbell, first vicepresident; Chris Loomis, second vicepresident; Jim Garrison, third vicepresident; Chris Miyamoto, secretary! treasurer; Mike Kenyon, GP representative; and Jay Pringle, production representative. Gene W. Andal, Director of the Sacramento County Department of Parks and Recreation, announced that beginning Nov. 1, 1982, Prairie City Off-Highway Vehicle Park will be closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The new operating hours will be 8 a.m. to dark on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays. Day use fees will remain the same ($2 for 4x4s, quarter midgets, bikes over 100cc and $1 for minibikes). The AMA Grand National numbering system will be divided into dirt track and road race categories beginning in 1983. Under an addendum to '83 rule changes, now only dirt track National and non-National points will be used to determine dirt track and Grand National numbers. The National road racing numbering system will take the top 50 road racers in combined Formula One and Superbike points and issue them numbers 10-60. Numbers 61 and up, as well as vacant National numbers, will be given out at each race to riders with no reserved National number. As· before, numbers 1-9 are reserved for the present and past AMA· Grand National Champions. To maintain a National road race number, the rider must continue to place in the top 50 in combined points. The AMA also announced it will continue the Novice-to-Junior-toExpert advancement system for dirt track racing that it began last June. Under the rules, a Novice can advance to Junior with 60 points and six months in that grade, or 40 points and one year. From Junior to Expert takes 80 points and one year in grade. Example: Novice John Doe starts in January of 1982 and makes 60 points by June. He can then move to Junior, but it will be June 1983 before he can move to Expert, if he's accumulated his 80 points. Other AMA rule changes prohibit water-cooling in dirt track and Superbike road racing unless it is part of the manufacturer's approved model. • t " t t ~ They also deal with tires, Superbike minimum weights and remove restrictions on carburetor type and size in the Superbike ranks. In a case contesting the Bureau of Land Management's off-road vehicle designation for Dove Springs Canyon, the Sierra Club and three other organizations have requested that a federal judge over BLM to close the 3,000-acre "open" area to ORVs. A hearing on the request has been scheduled for Dec. 6 in the U.S. Courthouse here. While BLM has maintained the area as open to unrestricted ORV use, the Sierra Club claims Dove Springs Canyon is "a classic example of both off-road vehicle damage and BLM inaction to curb that damage." The site is but a I miniscule portion ofthe 12.6 million acres of BLM-managed federal land in the California Desert Conservation Area. The designation of this site as an ORV area makes it an integral part of the California Desert Management Plan, and it is believed that finding fault with the BLM's decision to manage Dove Spring Canyon as an open area is the same as faulting the entire Plan. The Sierra Club suit is one of five filed against BLM which are all being heard by Judge A. Wallace Tashima. Included in the five suits is one filed by the AMA and charging BLM with not adequately considering off-road riders when the agency drew up its ORV quidelines for the California Desert Conservation Area. The AMA vs. Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki lawsuit, mentioned elsewhere on these pages, will be in court on Nov. 3 for a hearing on the confidentiality of some of the documents subpoenaed by the AMA. According to AMA attorney David Belson, "We filed our papers on the scope of a protective order, filed a sealed document containing excerpts from some of the documents, and a response to the defendants' application. Federal rules require that a trade secret or commercial confidentiality be shown. Initially, when the parties first went to court, the defendants took the position that the documents produced in the. litigation only be used in the litigation. They now appear to have backed away from that position in that their newer form of protection order they are limiting that to what has actually been produced which they might want to claim a commercial confidentiality. A good example is rider contracts." On Saturday, Nov. 20th, a Benefit AMA 0-36 MX will be run at Argyll Park in Dixon, CA, to raise funds to help Vet rider Mike "Boop Boop" Smith battle his hospital bills during his fight against leukemia. The event is being put on with the help of Boss MX, Argyll Park Promotions, the Sacramento Jammers M.C. and the Sacramento Chapter of the National Motorcycle Patrol; all these pea- . pie need is for you to come out and . ride. He •• ... f" •• ... • o "' 1""""4 Christine Martin Veronique Anquitel French women to compete in SCORE/Pernod Baja 1000 Although both French and all-women motorcycle teams have started , and conquered the Baja 1000 before, Pernod is sponsoring the first all-woman motorcycle team to make the attempt. Christine Martin, 33, a French television and film producer, and Veronique Anquetil, 23, will team on a Yamaha IT250 to attempt the 985-mile Ensenada to La Paz race. Although both are relative strangers to the Baja peninsula, both have extensive endurance experience. Both have won the women's division of the fame~ Paris to Dakar rally, with Martin winning in 1980-81 and Anquetil in 1982. Asked how they approached the Baja event, where the course is tackled all at once, instead of in stages, Martin said, "Baja is a very long race. We hope to transfer riders. In the African rallys, riders ride 400 to 800 kilometers at a time, with very large gas tanks because there are no gas stops. In Baja we will stop for gas every 70 miles." The MartiniAnquetil team faces a' serious handicap in that they will not be able to pre-run much of the course, especially the part that is run at night. We wish them luck. had a Cagiva 250 motocrosser in the back of his truck and will ride one at the final. The Cagiva 260 actually displaces 198cc, and while .Marty says the stocker seems fast enough, Cagiva is sending him two works bikes for the race. The real size of the works engines is not known Between the time we recieved our Husqvarna 500cR and the time the test ran, the price dropped from the $2950 price' we reported to $2495. Even the '83 500 is cheaper than the price we reported -$55 cheaper. , Husky stilI has '82 500s in stock. We also neglected to mention in our article that the Huskys have a 30-day limited warranty on the frame and engine. They are the only competition cycle currently sold with a warranty. We've told you before that Nov. 7 is Bruce Penhall's first appearance on CHIPs. The episode is centered around the World Speedway Finals, which· of course, PenhaU won in real life.· Speaking of reat life, real life speedway racers like Rick Miller and Mike Bast appear in this episode, so give it a look. The scenario goes something like this: Penhall plays the brother 'of one of the existing CHiPs characters and is going for the World Speedway title. Once he wins it (You don't think the outcome is in doubt, do you?), he decides to become a highway patrolman. (Papa wonders how that w()uld~v8 gone over in the English press.)
