Western hotline Frank Mazur and Bernd Koegler won the AFM team relay race. lead [rom Fitz-Gibbon, who had passed Manley earlier on the same lap. By the third lap, Rob Trone had moved his Honda up to third and was challenging Fitz-Gibbon. With two laps left. Trone made his move and took over second behind Peterson. Peterson emerged out of the first comer of the second moto in the lead and was uncatchable. Manley was in second with Fitz-Gibbon and Trone close behind. Trone passed FitzGibbon on the second lap and moved by Manley a lap later. On the fourth lap, Manley bobbled and both FitzGibbon and Skinner went- around him. Skinner then waited a lap before finding a way around Fitz-Gibbon for a third place finish. Peterson took the overall with a 1-1. Mazur/Koegler riposte AFM relay By Lori Tyson WILLOW SPRINGS, CA, OCT. 24 The team of Frank'Mazur and Bernd Koegler took. an ~asy win in the AFM's first Relay race at Willow Springs. Mazllr/ Koegler had smooth rider changes, and with a mandatory rider change each lap, their quick switches helped to stretch their lead to almost a half lap by the end of the seven laps. Watching the other teams change riders was almost like watching a Keystone Cops movie and had eve· ryone, including the riders, laughing. The second place team of John Thornton and Ted Toki did well considering the fact that Thomton had never ridden a GPz and had to hop on partner Toki's 550 cold and . go racinR. The third place team, Paloheimo/Dopp, had definate problems judging stopping distance for .their rider change, which made it more of a foot race for them than a motorcycle race. But when they finally got it right. everyone cheered far them. Riders and spectators alike enjoyed this race, and hopefully, we will see another one soon. Results RELAY RACE (600): 1. Millar, Woody set GP pace over 30· By Terry Rezek VALENCIA, CA, OCT. 17 California Racing Club's "President Cup" Grand Prix picked up a new CRC sponsor; Skoal, the .smokeless tobacco. They were on hand with their Skoalwagon (Sko~lmobile?)and plenty of samples for those who wanted to try something different. Only in California could the midOctober weather be sO beautiful or the spectating at a race be so revealing, or at least what some of the female fans were wearing- was. The multitudinous classes of the Vets and Seniors race were led from start to finish by Bill Millar, riding in the +30 Expert class. Right behind Millar for the 'whole trip was Vet Expert Dan Moore. For those who don't get the connection, the +30 class is made up of riders between 30 and 40 years old who ride mostly GP's. The Vets are the same age bracket, but mostly MX riders. What happens at 40? In GP racing, you get to follow Chuck Woody, who usually leads the Senior classes as he did again today. Some of those youngsters in the 30-40 bracket are beginning to wonder if he's getting younger. The Pros and Experts were up next and Greg Kammerman was up for the start, getting off the line way ahead of everyone else. Things changed when they got into the back country and Brand Johnson came out of the woods pushing his big-bore Suzuki into the lead at the end of lap one. Scott Morgan had his Yamaha in a super-tight second at this point. About 10 seconds back came a threepack of Mark Boren, David Taylor and Ken Zahrt. Taylor made a giant leap in lap two and went to second to begin reeling-in the still-leading Johnson. By the end of lap three, he was in position and swooped his Suzuki by Johnson to take the lead and hold it for the win. A few laps later, Zahrt put a little green)n the scene as he moved his Kawasaki into Second overall and second 25Occ. Yamaha support rider Pete Snorteland made it a three-way 250cc win by finishing third overall. Johnson held on to finish first Open Pro with Morgan second. The next race hada number of bike sizes from 100 to 200cc and classes from Expert and Beginner. Over 45 minutes, this is a scorer's nightmare. There was no confusion over the early leaders, though. In a pack over the river ramp jump, Rich Truchinsky, Mike Casuana and mystery rider #13 leapt like they were welded together: Truchinsky managed to shake those two, but as he stretched out his lead over the other riders, so did Cam Johnson. Johnson made a carefully calculated move on the last lap and neatly passed Truchinsky to get the win. It got crowded back in the Novice ranks but there was no mistaking Jeff Sills wire-to-wire win in that class. Results MINI EX: 1. Lance Johnson (Yam); 2. Jeff Barba- civi (Yam); 3. Joe Lozano (Yam). Old Timers McGraw, Statham take over at DeAnza By Bob Alloy SUNNYMEAD, CA, OCT. 17 Today'smotocross was really a special event for the Old Timers, because after the regular moto, we held our super father and son team races. There were five different father and son teams and the Old Timers were given one lap and the co-riders were given three laps. At the end of each rider's last lap, he passed a .rubber belt to the next rider and so on until all the riders on one team have completed their laps. Team two proved out to be the fastest. A potluck dinner was enjoyed by all team participants and their fortunate friends. Our thanks to Ed Michetti, who makes it possible for us to have a great time like this. The regular moto·had two Il-Iap motos. Amateurs and Novices had the second race and Masters and Experts raced in the fourth. Master Stathem started things off by zooming around out in first place, and he kept the super power going for four laps until he was passed by McGraw.. McGraw then carried his lead right on up to the finish. The second moto began with Willison taking the holeshot and the lead for a lap. Statham again powered in with the lead and kept· it for nine laps. McGraw again took Statham'.s lead and carried it to another win. Stathem looked good with his second place. Ted Holt, of Junior Masters, had an excellent day with his two first place motos. Ted makes that watercooled Yamaha really come through. George Spearing had a great time picking up both second place finishes. Expert Gabe Gutierrez is really on a winning streak, and he picked up another 1-1 overall win. Bob De Miranda got the holeshot in moto one and took second place in motos one and two, which made for a good day of racing. Asker Larnkjaer took third place in moto one and Cal Browning took third in moto two. Dick Burley, of Amateurs, was supercharged today and blasted away out there to win both motos. Sofka took second in moto one and Adragna took third. Then in moto two it was Adragna taking second and Sofka taking third. Results MASTERS: 1. McGraw; 2. Staham. JR MASTERS: 1. Ted Holt; 2. OAHU, HAWAII, OCT. 15 Damien Gouvei~ designed a completely new TT course, .added a precise sprinkling of water truck, and then ran the tightest and hottest night of IT racing this season for Tommy Uejo's Action Promotions. Hagi Alexander added a new 490 to liis stable of Yamaha of Hawaii-sponsored bikes and proceeded to sweep both motos of all three Expert classes. Only Mike McGuire edged Hagi in both jackpot heats to ruin an Alexander grand slam. Battle of the night was the Open Support class. Stacy Akana barely took the overall in a three-way showdown with Ricky Amano and Sonny Salavea. First moto was a scramble, with Akana battling his way to the -lead, but then going over the berm and losing two positions while roost-ing his way out of the soft stuff. Sonny aadRicky got by and held on to finish first and second ahead of . Stacy.
